MY2SONS Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 What do you guys use when using heavy cannonballs on the riggers (14#) to eliminate the shock on the line at the end of the decent/retrieve? I've heard there's some sort of shock absorber some guys use, but I'm not sure what it is. Since I can't get out and fish I might as well start stocking up for next year right?
fishsniffer Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 there is a cannonball shock absorber...not sure what downriggers you use..i use the cannon mag 5hs and it rolls to a stop so i guess ive never needed one
HitMan Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Scotty makes a shock absorber. It looks like a big diver snubber. Here is a link: http://www.scotty.com/fishing-gear-equipment/fishing-supplies/diver-snubber.htmI have no idea if it could take a heavy weight or not. Personally, I wouldn't trust it. Someone else also makes a coil looking spring that is supposed to be a shock absorber as well.Depending on your downrigger brand, auto-stop below the surface is the best feature and no shock absorber is needed.
Priority1 Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 You could probably use a black rubber bungee strap with your big balls.
1mainiac Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Another reason I like my Big Jons the booms flex so not a issue.
Paulywood Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 I run 14#ers of my Big Jons and don't use anything. I don't know if a shock absorber is needed on other brands or not.
mayvillemark Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Big Jons are the way to go like everyone said theshock absorberis built in.
MY2SONS Posted December 7, 2009 Author Posted December 7, 2009 I have Cannons on my rig right now, but I was advised by a guy at the local outfitter shop in Holland to use some sort of shock absorber when using 14# balls. I just bought some #14 balls so I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. There's nothing worse then having your balls bounce uncontrollably.
fishsniffer Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 I have Cannons on my rig right now, but I was advised by a guy at the local outfitter shop in Holland to use some sort of shock absorber when using 14# balls. I just bought some #14 balls so I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. There's nothing worse then having your balls bounce uncontrollably. like i was saying i have cannons and they have the auto stop..so they coast to a stop(maybe a foot)and when raising it the ball doesnt break the surface so my balls arent rubbin against my boat..they do dip in and out of the water though:)
GLF Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Can you imagine what the non-fisherman think when they read a thread like this? I have 15lb balls on my big jons. The are connected directly to the cable.
Line Dancin Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 14's on my walker tournament series and no problems.edit:directly connected
Just Hook'n Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 I too run BIG BALLS (15lbers) and have had no issues. Now, I don't run as fast as Mikes Brutes that he got late season, but not everyone can have all the cool gear. I've not had any issues without snubbers.
seabee Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Dubro makes the shock absorbers you are talking about I use, and they work well.
Yankee Troller Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 I don't see the need for it I guess. I am running Scotty's with 250lb Power Pro. I have run up to 20lb weights (sharks) in up to 4-6's without ANY issues. When it gets rough I try not to put that much stress on the line, and i downsize to 15lb'ers.
