caznik Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 Mine would have to be Frankfort. Frankfort is a nice place to go camping and go fishing. The fish seems to be bigger there and you do not have to go very far out to hit deep water. I even have better luck fishing at night. Also the scenery looking back at the shore line is great. I sure wish I lived closer there because I would fish there every weekend.RichManistee would have to be 2nd
Midway97 Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 I would have to say St. Joe is my favorite. Only fished this side of the lake for one season... Port Sheldon seemed very nice, but needs to deepen the area around the launch, ditto on Snug Harbor in Muskegon. I like Manistee, but not real excited about running the river from Insta Launch (again shallow water), so I guess I'd have to say that Ludington is my 2nd favorite port.
bluedevil Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 On the west side it would have to be Manistee. But like Wayne said about Insta Launch, never again will I launch out of there and my boat is smaller than Wayne's.I really need to get up there to Frankfort sometime. I have heard the same things you say about it Rich from others.
Adjusted3 Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 St. Joe and the reason is that on any given day you can catch a mixed bag of fish. Ports up north and they are all about salmon. Lakers, browns, cohos and steel are more of a "mistake" then the norm....St. Joe gets great numbers of all of themMark
DIRTY DOG Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 I Would Have To Say Saugatuck Becouse It Only About 20 Min. From My Home And I Can Usally Catch Our Limet Or Very Close To In Most Day And Agood Mix Of Fish I Also Fish Port Sheldon From Time To Time And Have Been To Ludington And Did Not Like The Big Crowds But Did Like The Number Of Fish Saugatuck Is Normaly Not Bussy At All Normal Day Less Than 30 Boats Fishing
huntingfool43 Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 I am with Rich, Frankfort is a real nice port. A buddy, my brother and I use to go up there a couple times a year, then they wimpped out and I haven't been there in a few years. Manistee or Ludington would be a close second.

Probly go Friday and leave there on Sunday morning.Rich
huntingfool43 Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 Hey Steve, Maybe this year if you like to. Maybe we can go up to Frankfort on Memorial weekend and try it. nomas Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 I love the port of Manistee. However, I would really like to fish Frankfort sometime. Too bad it's nearly a three hour drive. Traverse City is right up there too. Anytime you can go on east bay and be able to fish days were you would be blown off at other ports is fine by me.
CaptLevi Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 For Salmon and Trout, St. Joe of course! But there is a special place in my heart for Frankfort. Very nice area with great fishing.
Sixshooter Posted February 6, 2006 Posted February 6, 2006 I'm not telling....It's a secret....If I tell then everybody on the internet might start fishing there....Oh my.....
Adjusted3 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Six,I know your fav. port....It should be in the "Hall" of fame!!!Mark
Midway97 Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Your realy in the smoke blowing mood tonight aren't you?? I can only imagine your "fav" port is "close" to home or are you telling a little white lie??
Treblemaker Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 My favorite port is Port Sheldon. It's 20 minutes form home and there is fish there. Door Co. WI, Indiana, St. Joe, Manistee are top favorites too.
Severus Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 Six,I know your fav. port....It should be in the "Hall" of fame!!! Mark Nope. NOT Whitehall, Mark. It's the other one. Jim's been very clear on that. My fav LM port is whichever one is hot.
Catfishhoge Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 I got to go with Jim's choice but heck, which ever one I am fishing is a favorite of mine!Rick
Steve Arend Posted February 7, 2006 Posted February 7, 2006 That all depends on the time of year. St. Joe in the spring and early summer and then I would have to say Manistee for late summer after the skams. leave St. Joe. Steve
Mrs. Sixshooter Posted February 9, 2006 Posted February 9, 2006 I too like Jim's favorite spot, but I must say I like Manistee too. Can't wait till Labor Day Weekend!!!!
TROUT TRACKER Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 My favorite is Port sheldon that is where I cut my big lake teeth. Manistee would be my second choice.
Dv8oR Posted February 13, 2006 Posted February 13, 2006 Muskegon, cuz I can navigate it without falling outside the markers and bending my prop!
Oakley Posted February 13, 2006 Posted February 13, 2006 I would have to say Port Sheldon since I started my salmon fishing there, then Pentwater because it's an easy run either north or south to the points, then Muskegon.
Reel_Screamer Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 I would have to say Ludington for me dont usually have to search far for fish... Have a few charter friends over there that give me the head's up on the fishing....
Satisfaxion_Gauranteed Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 South Haven because it's very rarely busy, closest to my house, and the fishing is generally pretty good. I'm sorta partial because that's where I met my current wife for our first date 5 years ago. A close second would be Pentwater. I just like the geographical location, the town, and it's not too busy either.
silver one Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 My two favorite ports would have to be St.Joe from April to the first of July and Manistee from Firts of july to october. These are two special ports to me for the fact as a Kid I was lucky growing up with a father Who was of the first generation to start fishing the great lakes for salmon and so we always had a boat and those are the two ports we fished every year. Not to mention the fishing was phenominal, especially back in the early to mid 80's for coho in St.joe. Now a days we fish southhave alot. 1 Its the closest port to my home and 2 its the qickest to get on and off the lake with the exeption of Manistee where the launch it right in the herbor moulth.
