GLF Posted June 28, 2006 Posted June 28, 2006 Local News - Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., is dumping on Sugar Island, says a Michigan state representative. Democrat Gary McDowell was on the St. Mary's River Monday to inspect for himself long-standing complaints from residents across from the Canadian Sault's east-end sewage treatment plant that discharges are fouling their waters. He said his nose led him to the plant's discharge pipe. "When you're out there, it's so obvious. Right at the outlet, it's coming out. Even if you didn't see the floaties and the colour (of the water), the smell takes right there," McDowell said Tuesday from Lansing, Mich. "It was absolutely horrible. I was just aghast. It was worse than anything I expected.http://www.saultstar.com/webapp/sitepages/printable.asp?paper=www.saultstar.com&contentID=89808&annewspapername=The+Sault+Star
Empty Hook Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 i can imagine what he found i work for a wwtp and cant imagine a plant with just primary treatment and discharging raw to the water. can you say major fine. we just had the worst flooding here in our area ever with up to 9 inches of rain and we couldnt help our discharge to the river. we are dead in the water litteraly. we are trying hard to get back up and running but our whole plant went under. heres 2 pics one of our plant and one of lucky boaters who some how had there boats survive the 26 foot above flood surge. they tied them to the bridge after they did a air boat rescue for all passengers. no fishing this weekend just pumping water and changing motors.
GLF Posted July 1, 2006 Author Posted July 1, 2006 Wholly Crap! No pun intended. That looks like a transformer behind the 3 yellow posts. At work we only have oil filled transformers, no pcb's. Were tehy completely submerged? If so, are they going to check the transformer oil for contamination before they turn the power back on? Probably at least need to clean the electrical connections and switch gear.
Empty Hook Posted July 10, 2006 Posted July 10, 2006 we got back up and running 75% yesterday with no by passing hurray! they installed a new transformer and we had a hazmat company in and pump all contaminated water out and clean the buildings. along with that oil in them we had a gas, desiel and kerosene tanks flip and a tractor submerged that leaked oil. DEC is happy the way it was cleaned. we had to wait for that to get done before we could go in and pull all the motors and pumps. these 12 - 14 hr days 7 days a week are getting to me = no fishing..........
