anthonyyost Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Came back from Ludington Sunday after having the boat slipped all week, I have a coffee like stain from the water on my boat that I can't get off with any of the cleaners that I have.Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Paulywood Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 You can either buff it out or try acid. Depends on how hard you want to work. And if your trailer is galvanized don't use the acid. It will react.
Adam Bomb Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I cant remember what we used to use before we had bottom paint...I think that easy on/off took care of the water mark.
anthonyyost Posted August 10, 2009 Author Posted August 10, 2009 Someone told me to use toilet bowl cleaner, anyone tried that? The boat is a 1984 and was always slipped in the summer, and it had no staining when I bought it, must be some relatively simple way to clean it?
Adam Bomb Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I think i heard of someone using sno bowl before.
Paulywood Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 You probably need to get a good coat of sealer wax on it. The gel coat is porous and absorbs the stained water. That causes the stain. My boat was slipped before I bought it and cleaned with acid every year. I haven't had a chance to wax it yet and it stains if I don't clean it. I use a fiberglass cleaner that has acid in it. Can't remember the name.
GLF Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Go to Walmart and get a bottle of hull cleaner(I think its made by Sea Brite) in the marine section. Soak a sponge with it, and wipe it on. In less than a minute it will be gone. Make sure you wear gloves when you are applying it, and wash it off after you are finished. I use to have a white bass boat and had to use this all the time on it.
Rayman96 Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 some of these products have worked well for merenew 3000 comes to mindhttp://www.epabest.com/RVAppearance.html
2UNREEL Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Try using, soft scrub gel if nothing else works. I have been using it on my upper deck and its the easiest I have found for getting tree sap and gook off. It might work.
MY2SONS Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 I had the same problem on my fiberglass boat, and when I went to West Marine they guy there showed me some various brands of hull cleaner. I commented on how expensive they were, and he said "You know, I've spent the last 20 years as a chemist, and if you want to save some money go to Wal-Mart pick up a bottle of The Works toilet bowl cleaner. It's the same thing, and a heck of a lot cheaper". You have to get the one that has hydrogen chloride (hydrochloric acid) in it, NOT bleach. That and a $2.00 sponge mop from the Dollar store, and it wipes right off. Be sure to use gloves that cover your hands, and arms because it is caustic. Eye protection is a must too. A drop of that stuff in your eyes, and your blind.
anthonyyost Posted August 12, 2009 Author Posted August 12, 2009 I went over to Lakeside Motor Sports in Mecosta and found a bottle of hull cleaner with acid in it. Takes the stuff right off, but you are right if you get it on your skin you had better rinse it off right away.
