News Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 The public health department conducts weekly tests of 38 public beaches on Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and the Niagara River from June to August. When water tests show unacceptable levels of E. coli bacteria -- counts exceeding 100 CFU (colony forming units) per 100 millilitres -- signs are posted at that beach to warn swimmers that it is not safe to enter the water.
