Round gobies also conspired with zebra and quagga mussels to form a bastardized food chain that unleashed Type E botulism outbreaks, killing more than 70,000 Great Lakes water birds over the past decade. Among the casualties: Nearly 9,000 iconic loons that washed up on beaches along lakes Ontario, Erie, Huron and Michigan.
