fishsniffer Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 im thinking of going to a single hook on my spoons...what have youre experiences been with them?does anyone know the pros and cons of doing this?
Yoda Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 We Run single hooks on almost all our spoons, they hook and hold very very well, 99% of all spoons we run are Raiders, they come with the single hook. no more hooks tangled in the net, one very big plus
fishsniffer Posted February 23, 2009 Author Posted February 23, 2009 what size and brand hooks do you put on them?
Yoda Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 The standard size Raider spoon carries a 3/0 Lazer Sharp Eagle Claw SiwashThe Magnum Raider spoon carries a 4/0
boomerang Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 ill use all 3/0 and 4/0 singles......not noticed a huge fifference in hook-up but easy to get out of the net and much safer with the kids on the boat!!!!
2UNREEL Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I would hate to think of what it would cost to replace all my lures with single hooks. I might experiment some day but I'm not convinced its better.
Yoda Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Our hook ups are about the same as a treble, the singles do seem to hold a bit better, they burey deeper into the fishes mouth. and my opinion is, unless a treble is deep in the fishes mouth it works against itself. I'd wouldn't tell anybody one style of hook is better than another, they both catch fish very well, SHARPNESS is the biggest cause of lost fish in my book, I can not think of any strait pointed hooks that are sharp enough to use out of the package, Treble or single. Filed sharp hooks will put more fish in the boat......
Priority1 Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I like singles. They store easier, hook deeper, and are easier to sharpen.
Paulywood Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I agree Frank. I started switching all of mine last year. I'll finish this year.
SkeinMachine Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I use both, only downfall when using singles is they have a tendancy to hook smaller fish in the eye socket, thus no C & R.Prefer siwash for staged kings with their hard mouths.

I have also brain hooked some shakers. A fair percentage of released fish die anyway. They seldom come unbuttoned using the singles.
