Reel Crazy Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I'm looking to buy a couple of gimbal-mount rod holders. I recently ran across some made by LPG. They are made from aluminum. Anyone familiar with this brand? Are they able to handle pulling dipseys? Also, if anyone uses gimbal-mounted rod holders...are they secure, or should I look into something sturdier? Thanks.
Boltman Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Try this website, they are expensive though..All Aluminum too.deepbluemounts.com
slipknot Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 I use a dual rod holder gimbal mount on both sides of the boat. I pull wire divers in them all the time with no troubles. Mine are aluminum as well. I would suggest drilling a small hole at the bottom of the mount that sticks through the bottom of the flush rod holder... put a small padlock through the hole. This prevents the gimbal mount from being able to pull up and out of the gunwale (whether wave action or theft). One other thing I did was wrap a thin layer of rubber around the shaft of the gimbal mount to keep it from rattling.
Reel Crazy Posted February 5, 2009 Author Posted February 5, 2009 Thanks. I'll follow your advice! Walleyes beware ....
tobusyhavinfun Posted February 21, 2009 Posted February 21, 2009 The LPG is Lakeland Products Group.... I have 2 sets that I use for walleye fishing. Those will not hold up to dipsys!!! There are a lot of rod holders out there that will but the lakeland Products rod holders are made for holding rods for walleye fishing off of big Planer boards or drifting etc. They are not ment for heavy uses like dipsys or pulling in-line boards etc.
Reel Crazy Posted February 22, 2009 Author Posted February 22, 2009 Thanks, toobusy - I was really glad to hear from an actual owner. Looks like I'll keep shopping!
tobusyhavinfun Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 If you are looking for rod holders that will hold up to dipsey rods they get expensive quick. Dipseys obviously need something fairly heavy duty. I would recommend any of these.Good luck!!http://www.ciscofishingsystemsltd.com/601.htmlhttp://www.naturevisioninc.com/vector/http://www.bigjon.com/http://www.traxstech.com/http://www.teclausa.com/bert/products.html
Low_Cost_Rod_Holders Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Full Disclosure: I am with LPG and would like to address these comments. LPG rod holders were redesigned about 3 years ago and are now able to withstand the greater load of dipsys and in-line boards. The improvements made include:stainless steel pins as opposed to aluminum;more robust hand wheels; andthicker angle arms (the part that holds the rod holder to the slide base). Also, LPG sold a spring loaded rod holder that was advertised as NOT recommended for trolling. Even so, LPG has discontinued that type of rod holder. For more information about LPG, please go to www.lakelandproducts.com
