How many of you know what geocaching is? I started doing this with my sons last week. Is anyone here a geocacher?

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called "geocaches" or "caches") anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and "treasure," usually toys or trinkets of little value. Today, well over 800,000 geocaches are registered on various websites devoted to the pastime.

If you watch mighigan out of doors on thursdays they actually had a segment on this back in late Aug early september. Like Frank said. Hi tech scavanger hunt. but for some its fun. To each his own. I would rather go searching for silvers.

I like doing it because its something to do with the boys when I am not fishing and gets us out of the house.

I have friends out west who do it or at least they used to hv not chatted with any of them about it in a while. Good way to teach the kids how to navigate I have thought of doing it with my boat to help teach my wife how to use the GPS. My idea was to toss out several markers and log their positions and then have the wife go and find them using the chart plotter. One of the guys I work with has a son who is into boat navigation he told me they have contests on the big lake. Where they lay out a course with several turns the kids have to figure out course speed and time to complete each run. Then they take em out in a boat and only get to use the compass and tach to run the course they get scored by how accurately they run the course. Now give me coordinates to a school of hungry 20lb Salmon and I will geocach with the best of ya.

I signed up on geocaching website about 4 years ago and you can go on some pretty neat hunts. There are several caches not too far from your place Mike. There is probbably 1500 in the LP of Michigan alone. I have never had time to find a cache but I have found datum markers. I think it would be fun to go X-country sking for some sometime in mid winter and enjoy the beautiful woods in the snow without fear of being shot by a gunslinger.

There are lots of them around here. I have found the ones closest to our house already.
