Welcome aboard Scott. I fish Lake Hurons Saginaw Bay for Walleye and Lake Perch, and a few trips a year to Lake Michigan for some Salmon. You will like it here.

LMAO Bob. I'll try it. I have a large C.I. frying pan and I use a gas hot plate I bought at an Amish store near Mt Pleasant MI. The gas hot plate was $15. The hot plate was for Propane, but I have a chart and a set of orifice drills so now it's suitable for Nat Gas. I have a place in the garage and one on the patio to use this setup. I would rather eat fried Gills, Walleye, or Lake Perch than a steak any day. Walleye tomorrow.

The big flat fish will work fine. With flat fish you have to slow down to about 2 MPH for them to run right. Test your boat speed with the lure along side the boat.

It looks like it should work. I think we all have noticed that certain days anything will work. Some days you just have to hit on the right spread. Like I always say,"Find out what they want and give em lots of it". I guess this applies to fishermen and fish.

Great Lakes Salmon Days - 8 March - Kalamazoo, MI
Priority1 replied to GLF's topic in General Discussion
These events provide a ton of information, and usually some fantastic prices on their products. The dealers and manufacturer's reps know that you are their best salesmen. -
Anton, I use #4 and #5 J Plugs. As the Salmon get closer to spawning the spoon and plugs get larger. The Silver J is good as well as the lighter glow in the dark colors. Purple is another good color.

She looks like a sweet ride for the year. The boat looks like it's in GR8 condition.

Good Question. I have used bay leafs in soups and stews for years. A whole bay leaf or two will add a lot of flavor during cooking. I never gave it any thought as to why they are not ground up like other spices. Bay leafs don't cook well, but impart a unique flavor to the broth. I never make any kind of soup without 2 of them in the pot.

I do enjoy the bull sessions. I got home a little too late yesterday and hit the sack shortly afterwards. It's a GR8 way to share information.

I run two 55W halogens that I bought @ Boaters World $30 for the pair. They are mounted with my rocket launcher. This pic was taken during installation. I have since rotated the lights a little outward to help light up the water near the boat sides. It made a world of difference for early and late trips.

Just keep throwing fish on the table. Capt. Chip could eliminate any line up @ the cleaning station. Damn!!! he's good.

I would most definitely have some Luhr Jensen J Plugs, or something close.

Yes the bend in the Dipsy rod is another way to judge the speed. Rods are different so it's something you learn as you go. Another way to tell if you are going too slow or fast is the zigzag course. If you start hammering fish on the inside Dipsy, or even on the inside out and down, on a slight turn you can deduce that your straight away speed is a little fast. And just the opposite will be true if the outside Dipsy starts taking fish. Walleye fishing or Salmon fishing, I seldom steer a straight course. When things are not happening drive like a drunken sailor. A change up pitch is sometimes called for.

I'm not against anyone having their toys, but some things are wants more than needs. I don't think I'll ever have one, or even want one, but damn isn't technology great. Think back 10 to 20 years and the stuff was not available or was priced out of any of our reaches. It will amaze all of us what will be available to our kids and grandkids. It is cool to see some of the videos taken with these underwater cameras.

One thing you can do is watch the cable blow back. Going against an underwater current, it can be noticeably greater. You may not know the speed @ the ball but you slow down a tad. Another way to get by without this tool is to fish near some charter boats or other experienced fishermen. Try to find out what they are running, how far down, and by paralleling them you can adjust your speed to match theirs. Some captains are very tight lipped about giving information. Other captains will be happy to help you in any way possible. I have heard request over the radio for the thermocline depth. I have a Fish Hawk that came with my boat, and I have given this information out before. The speed and temp @ the ball is a great tool, but having this tool is NOT necessary to become a good GLs fisherman.

Dreamweaver & Big Jon Charity Fun Tournament Challenge

What a GR8 way to support a GR8 Charity. I wish I lived closer. -
I was getting a little fluid in the sight tube of my 140 Mercruisers Carter fuel pump. To replace the pump, the least expensive place I found was AfterMarket Discount Marine, and the price was $80 plus S&H. So It was going to set me back about $90. I found a place on line that sells rebuild kits for many older rebuildable fuel pumps. I had about 1/2 hr into taking the pump apart and rebuilding it. The fluid in the sight tube was oil due to a worn out seal. This sight tube can also collect gasoline due to a bad diaphram. The kit cost $30 plus $12 S&H. I was preparing to pay the $90, but the money saved will help pay for some fishing expenses. Here is the link in case anyone needs to rebuild a fuel pump. It's not that difficult. Of course mine was a mechanical fuel pump. One more point, it's difficult to find any fuel without alcohol in it. Most of the older marine fuel systems are NOT compatible with alcohol. The new pumps, and pump kits are impervious to alcohol. You should also examine your rubber fuel line and replace it with a new C.G. approved one. http://www.then-now.com/The_Cellar/cellar.htm

I usually use a light Drakes Batter or I dust the fillets with flour and then dip them in a egg milk mix. I may be crazy but as good as the fish taste on day one, they always seem to taste better to me the next day. I have eaten them hot and cold, as a sandwich or just on a plate. I fry more walleye than any other fish. I just wondered if anyone else shares this trait, of liking them better the next day.

Welcome to the site Travis. Love them SC Islanders.

I am interested.

Yes it is scary stuff. This same situation has played out on Lake Huron, but seems to be slowly reversing.
