  1. Fishing for Kings I like to run between 2.5 and 3.2 MPH trolling spoons or flashers and squid or flies. If I'm running some dodgers or some body baits, I start slow with one over the side and increase the speed to see what speed the lure performs well at. A dodger in the spread usually means a speed around 2 MPH. One thing I like to do to fine tune the speed is drive like a drunken sailor. By this I mean a zig zag course. If you keep taking hits on the inside of the turn you may want to slow down a tad, and visa versa. There are a number of variables in the equation, and when you dial them all in EUREKA. Let the fish tell you what they want, then give em lots of it. In the Spring try running smaller spoons and some minnow type baits. Don't be afraid to run some mags when there are large bait fish around even in the Spring. Speed is important but different offerings run differently. Personally I think it's most important to run @ the speed the lure performs well at. Trolling spoons have the widest speed range. I run my probe on an inside rigger as do most.
  2. Good advice above. I like to fish around the nets, but I like to leave a little extra room for insurance. If in doubt play it safe.
  3. Welcome aboard Dave. I fish Lake Huron and it's Saginaw Bay, mostly for Walleye and Lake Perch. I do make a few trips a year to Lake Michigan to do some Salmon Slammin. When you are on Georgine Bay look West and see if you can spot me on the other side of Huron. You will like it here. People are willing to share.
  4. I don't think Mike even owns a trailer.
  5. The Silver is popular because they catch fish. They resemble bait fish. I use gold or brass spoons once in awhile. If you check the color charts in Keating's book, you will find Silver listed from 30-150 FOW.
  6. Good idea. I would like to see it on when the rigger is going up or down, along with a push button checker. Maybe I can deep six my cap light. Even with 2 55 W halogen lights shining down on the fishing area the counters are impossible to see now. I know this paragraph doesn't pertain to your question, but how about a big dial like on the old Penns. These big numbers for old eyes could even glow in the dark. Heck I wouldn't even need my reading glasses to see them in broad daylight. The counter numbers on a downrigger should definitely be larger than the numbers we have on a LC reel. JMHO I just thought of one more suggestion. I'm sure there are fisherman that are legally blind or close to it. A braille system could also be added to the LARGE DIAL. I know BigJon is a company that cares. The publicity alone would be worth the change.
  7. They are both very nice but the second one is easier to read.
  8. Good Job Rich. Nothing like fresh Bluegills for supper.
  9. Cabin Fever:no: These Kinky SOGs just want to tie up everything.
  10. 1. One battery 2. 63 A. 3. No
  11. I looked into having my Mando alternator rebuilt and the cost was $150. I figured I could rebuild it myself. I started checking around, and the V.R. alone for this off breed cat was $60-$70. I found that a new Delco was far less than rebuilding the Mando. One thing about the Delco a kit for them cost about $20. The Mando I had was overcharging. It would peg my V. meter on helm. I think GLF's alternator is doing the same. I think the V.R. in these alternators tends to be their weakest link. Any way, for me buying a different alternator was the way to go, less hassle and less $$$. Anyone needing a starter or alternator here is a good place to get one. http://www.db-starter-alternator.com/
  12. Another tool for the box. Presentation is one of the key elements in any kind of fishing. The Dive Bomb is another way to present your lure, while trolling.
  13. Put on a Delco. It will bolt right on. Mine had a Mando also and when it failed there was no question in my mind that I was going to a Delco. Of course you may need to change the main charging wire size for the extra amperage. I replaced a 55A Mando with a 63A Delco.
  14. Very fortunate not to have any deaths or serious injuries.
  15. My hopes were for Edwards on the D ticket and Romney or McCain on the R. My views are not as conservative as most republicans, and not as liberal as most democrats. I just don't believe that we have this countries best before us.
  16. Here is the one I use. It came with my boat, and it was almost full of spoons. http://www.lakemichiganangler.com/store/Special_Mate_8__Spoon_Tackle_Box.htm
  17. I think you probably mean 4/0 and 5/0. I use the same. I like the bone piercing qualities of the single hooks. I also like the safety aspect of less likely to get a hook in the hand, or a hook in the net. The Single hooks sure do store better in the bait file boxes.
  18. This is the best campaign button I have seen so far.
  19. I would sign up except, Im afraid I would deliberately smash into someone and then try and kick their A$$ inside the trailer meeting. Besides I'm old and slow, and like to watch the youngins go.
  20. BTW It's a good time to check your flare expiration dates. I have several flares on board that have expired yrs ago. The three 12 ga flares that are still legal expire in July. I need to buy three 12 ga flares. I checked mine a few weeks back, and the flares are on my list. I have a $100 gift card from Frank's Great Outdoors. Flares, Fishing Lic, Outdrive Oil, and whatever else makes it on the list.
  21. The red green thing is a good idea. When I pick up a Dipsy there is never a doubt which side it belongs on. The weight is on the bottom. I have some pouches that I store my Dipsy & Flashers in. If they are set for Starboard they are stored on that side. When you are setting a side, it just makes it handy. These pouches are Dollar Store Litter Bags.
  22. I have glow, chrome, green, and other colors in my Dipsy selection. I truthfully can't say that color makes much difference in the Dipsys I use. I most always run a flasher 4 ft or so behind the Dipsy, with a glow squid or fly behind it. I have found some buys on strange color unwanted Dipsys that still seem to get it done for me. I have painted some Dipsys in the natural glow color so in that sense I do lean towards the glows.
  23. Where are the candidates with integrity and charisma? It's tough for me to get too enthused over what is before us. I guess I'll vote for one of them, but there is not a head and shoulders above the rest candidate.
  24. Good Job Terry. Nothing like fresh perch or bluegills. They are so good on the plate it seems my stomach capacity increases about 50% every time we have them.
