Heads Up Chevrolet Silverado Rear Disc Brakes
Priority1 replied to Priority1's topic in General Discussion
But will you have to kill me after my jaw drops??? My parking brake gets used a lot especially on the ramps. I just don't trust the park pawl when I'm behind the truck operating the trailer winch. Thanks for the info. I had no idea the parking brake was a separate drum type brake. I'll definitely have them serviced every year. That M55 Roller Coaster between Cadillac and Manistee, I better not say how fast I go downhill to gain enough momentum for the uphill. Good thing my trailer brakes are good. -

Questions for Tim DV8R. I know the rear brakes don't usually wear as fast as the front. Can I deduce that the front brakes usually do most of the work? I was wondering if driving a few hundred feet with the parking brake on slightly would help keep these rear rotors shined up? I think the parking brake only engages the rear brakes. I sure want the rear brakes to be online when I need em. Just a thought. I guess one thing most everyone agrees with, Is that the trucks should have stayed with Drum Brakes in the rear. Was it weight, or cost that made them go down this road? -
I use 68 on Huron and Lake Michigan. 68 can get congested at times. Some people talk waaaaaay too much. LOL Other channels are also used.

Heads Up Chevrolet Silverado Rear Disc Brakes

I don't want this thread to turn into a pissing contest. My intent was to bring a serious brake problem that GM has recognized and has dealt with on a somewhat limited basis. I know other manufacturers have had their problems. I know we all love our trucks. I hope I haven't offended anyone. PEACE:) I'll remove the links because they only mention the rusted rotors limitedly. My next car or truck will be a GM. -

You are right Tim on the other brands also. My last truck a 94 F150 had to have the front rotors turned every 5-10K miles because the rotors would warp after a hard stop. I sold that truck with 120K after buying the 03 Silverado new. As far as the warranty issue goes dealers in most of the Northern States are covering this rust issue. I think NAFTA or CAFTA may be responsible for the low quality rotors that were original. These rotors look like they are laminated and not cast. The Dealers will NOT cover the pads as these are normal wear items. I know my cousins 02 HD Silverado was covered under this soft recall. Some of the other years are not. The dealers and the service reps will sometimes go to bat for you, because of this wide spread issue. Whether your vehicle is covered or not, getting it fixed is of the utmost importance. Pulling a trailer with bad brakes is a recipe for disaster, no matter who built the truck. Thus the reason for this post. Heads Up Chevrolet Silverado Rear Disc Brakes

Two hip replacements slowed me down 2 years in a row. The $3+/ per gallon of fuel also limits my truck use. I use it to haul and tow and not much else. I would guess it cost me around double to drive my 4X4 truck compared to my Chev Impala. My 04 Impala has 83K miles. I also live about 10 miles away from the boat launch I use the most. When I want to go fishing, I don't hesitate. -
Some of the Chevrolet Silverados with rear disc brakes are having a rust problem in the Northern salt states. The rear rotors especially on trucks that are not used a lot are rusting severely. The severe rust on the rotors is damaging the rear pads. I don't think there is a recall on them, but most of the dealers are aware of the problem and are covering most of the cost, even if the truck is out of warranty. I just had new rear rotors and pads installed and the front rotors turned. My truck is a 03 1500 with 22K miles. My cousin has a 02 HD with about 40K miles, that had the same problem. The bill on mine was $103 to me. I know most of you trailer boats and need the extra stopping power, that may not be there when you need it. Have them brakes checked if you are experiencing any noise or slight shaking when the brakes are applied. Heck!! I think I'm going to have mine checked every Spring from here on out. I know that some of the 05-08 models have went back to rear drum brakes. I think all of this applies to the GMCs also.

Buy with the same features for $60 less/ month. We can go fishing a couple times a month on the savings. Or wait until that little girl needs a new dress. Ya going to need that $60 Wheels. How is Beth doing Jason? We are keeping her in our prayers.

Welcome to the site Joe, you will like it here. I fish Lake Huron and it's Saginaw Bay, for Walleye and Lake Perch. I make a few trips a year to Lake Michigan for some Salmon Slammin. I would like to make a trip to Lake O one of these days. Lake Champlain a GL What about Lake St. Clair?? It's even in the chain and is larger than Champlain. Lake St. Clair as well as Lake Champlain are fantastic lakes with great fisheries. But for either to be designated a Great Lake, I still shake my head no:no:. JMHO

Jason, I saw that accident on the news, but names were not given. I'll keep her in my prayers. Give her a hug from me. Frank

Busting the IRS sure is a catchy title. LMAO I think the rule the IRS was trying to use against her was the inflation of assets rule. I had an encounter with them right after a business start up. Their auditors are paid to be Pr**ks. I had a ton of expenses, including a new van. I took delivery on the van the 28th of Dec, and my timing alone seemed to irritate him. My wife took it all very personal. I laughed at the SOB, took my wife out for a VN lunch, and added that to my deductions for the following tax year.

No I haven't been using it on my nails. Rather I just put a guide on one of my Dipsy Rods. I had one eye that was missing an insert. I raided my wife's sewing box for some black thread and her medicine cabinet for the clear nail polish. I had a broken rod in the garage that I robbed the eye from. I removed the broken eye with a jackknife, and glued it's replacement down with super glue, then checked it's alignment before the glue set. Next I wrapped the eye to the rod with the black thread. I then coated the wraps with the clear nail polish. It usually takes 3 - 5 coats of polish. Let it dry between coats. If you take care it will be difficult to notice the difference between the other guides. The nail polish is tough and easy to use. The polish also works well to touch up rod scratches or eye wraps that are cracked. Don't tell your wife:no: or it will probably piss her off. But on the other hand it may make her focus on that, and not something else that you did.

I hear you on the gas. My tank got topped off before laying the boat up. I usually burn 5 or 6 gal a trip. April will be 8 years since I retired. I think gas was around $1.50 a gallon then. My pension has went down since then because of the increases in health care insurance. I have to look at every expense very close. Pretty soon it will be row row row your boat. I am lucky to have some good fishing partners that help me out with expenses. I have to pinch a nickel until the buffalo craps a dime. Just a fact of life. I know what the real problem is, I'm having a hard time finding buffalo nickels any more.

BTW I use a Fishhawk 840 that came with my boat. I have six smoke detectors that use the 9V batteries as back up protection. I change these smoke detector batteries every year, and they still are in the green on the battery tester when I take them out. The batteries then get used up in my Fishhawk. A few bucks saved on batteries helps fill the tank, or buy a spoon or two.

A fishing friend of mine has a Alpha one 4.3L that he has rigged a gear reduction 12 volt motor to his Idle speed screw. Actually he had to remove the idle screw and replace it with a longer one he drilled so he could pin it to the motor shaft. I think he uses a DPDT momentarily on switch on the dash to control it. It sure makes it nice to be able to tweak the speed a couple of tenths of a MPH. He was trying to talk me into doing the same with my engine, but mine isn't as touchy as his was. I know what you mean about most boat controls. With mine I can bump the lever with the heel of my hand and then wait a few seconds to see if it responds. On most controls, I have found that it's easier to bump just a tad faster and tweak it on down to fine tune the speed. Make sure everything is lubed and adjusted properly. The set up he has is nice, especially when you have a rookie driver.

Yes the piece near the timing marks. Take the belt loose and try and remove it. It will then be very obvious what piece needs to be removed to get the old belt out and the new one in. It's a 10 minute job.

I love the 5:00 - 8:00 AM and the 7:00 - 10:00 PM time frames. Anyone ever notice on Lake Michigan; when the Sun hits the water and you hear that sizzling sound, The Kings go nuts.
-
Of course you loosen the Alternator to slack off the belt; then there are two long bolts, (I can see them in your lower pic) that hold a piece of the motor mount in place. Remove these bolts and then the portion of the motor mount, that they secure. Take a look at the motor mount and you will see the piece that needs removing to take off the old and install the new belt.
