Bob, Tell her to take her pick, the livingroom, or the office. -
Congrats, VN Sail.

Jeff, Too nice to cut on. Good ole Paperboy.

I have run a 2 color SWR, Good information in the posts above.

The lake is beautiful, all four seasons. Gotta Luv it.

Jeff, They look GRRRRR8. She is going to have you domesticated yet. J/K I actually like to cook. If I do I can most always count on my wife to clean up the mess.

Two thumbs up for Michigan Motorz. I have purchased things from them in the past. Tough to beat most of their prices. Fast shipping, or pick it up near Detroit.

Check out the NOAA charts and SeaClear software. Under $20 for all the US waters. http://www.officialnoaacharts.com/ They also show a demo video. The rough Service laptops have the hard drive cushioned. If the laptop was sitting on a 4 inch thick foam cushion it would add more protection. There are even solid state HDD with no moving parts. The Laptop could be used for other applications also. We are not in uncharted waters. Others are using this. I do think the key is to get a water resistant Rough Service Laptop.

Thanks Mike. I think it is needed. -
There has been some nice fish taken in the Shiver on the River contest. Here is a link. Adam Bomb can probably steer you right. http://www.mlive.com/sports/saginaw/index.ssf/2010/01/eleven_fish_on_the_board_after.html

Gordy, Welcome Back. We missed you. Nice Pic. -
I noticed some of the spoons have the little flipper. Swedish Pimple made a spoon called Laker Taker, that also used a flipper. Their flipper was on the split ring along with the hook. I still have some, and have taken Kings on them.

Cory, Nice pic. A warm welcome to the GLF site. You will like it here. Let us know if you need any help.

Gordy, Nice video. Normally I don't move too well, but I'll knock people over getting to a rod. FISHON

I have one of those alignment tools made to those specs. It was just another government job. I'll share it with anyone in my area.

I wasn't sure how a rough service laptop would hold up either. The Panasonic Tough Book seems to be one of the toughest. Signal would NOT be an issue. The computer receives it's signal for a rather inexpensive USB GPS receiver, that could be mounted on top of the hardtop. Laptops do not need an inverter. They run on batteries DC. They can be run off a car or boats electrical system just like a Sonar or GPS.These laptops can be obtained refurbished, and are supposed to be waterproof. I have seen some for around $300. Durability is the only issue, and a big one at that. I did see a video of a Toughbook being run over by a Hummer. If I had a laptop I would experiment with it on an ideal day. If it worked well then look into a used Toughbook. The GPS receiver and Software can be had for about $50. There are a quite a few Sail boats that are using the laptop GPS set up now. One of these days I may be dumb enough to give it a whirl. It sure would be nice to look at your boat or car on big screen chart or map. I'm not sold on this yet and appreciate all the input. Nick, Do you have a laptop I could use?

Some short cores can be made to run deeper when needed. Snap weights or Dive Bombs can put a half core to the depth that a full core runs. GLF is the Guru on the Dive Bombs. The one draw back is removing the weight while fighting the fish.

Tom, A very nice gesture.

It is a small world, especially with computers and the www. Places like the GLF site is a great way to share information and opinions. And here I thought I was the only dinosaur that evolved.

Rich, The link is for Lake MI. I fish Lake Huron (primarily), and Lake Michigan. If you fish both sides and maybe some inland lakes, that's more chips. Garmin used to include a good Great Lakes program built in. Or you could get the inland lakes version. All this new stuff is NP for people with big bucks. All the manufacturers are in this same game. Sell the unit and a chip, then keep jabbing you every time you make a move. I looked at a Garmin Unit yesterday and their base map didn't even include navigation to some of the smaller ports. I feel their base map should be as good as the NOAA information available free. I know Garmin could care less, how I feel. The unit I looked at had a 5 inch screen and a $750 price tag. They have us by the short hairs. MO Money.

But what about a stand alone Sonar??? Even a three or 4 year old color one. There are a lot of people that have to have the latest and greatest toys. I have no problem even picking up their few year old stuff.

A lot of PC software is the same way. You can use it on one machine only. In a few years all forms of transportation will have GPSs. Someone is going to come up with a way to geek around their Software. Technology is great, I don't have to be on the cutting edge. I'm basically a dinosaur, plopped into this new millennium. I didn't own a computer 10 years ago. I knew the units I posted are out of date. The price is right on these new, old stock units.

Has anyone researched or thought about using a Laptop as a GPS in their boat?? It seems this may have been hashed over before. My boat has a hardtop so it's dryer than most open boats. Below is what I figure would be the cost. $350 Used 13 inch Rough Service Laptop. Wouldn't need a super horse of a laptop but the rough service would be essential. $40 GPS receiver $15 NOAA Charts on DVD Pros: Big Screen, Lots of inexpensive, Software, Portable Boat to Car etc. Cons: Will the Laptop hold up? Would need to fab bracket to hold it. The software for the GPS units is what has my shorts in a knot. If some geek came up with a reasonably priced, tough unit that would run all available software, I'm sure it would sell. I think more competition is needed. I may still go with the individual Garmins, But I'm sure I'm going to be trying the laptop, somewhere down the road.

A big 10/4 on the external antenna. My ancient LMS 350 Lowrance has an external antenna, and it NEVER loses it's signal. The GPS receiver is mounted on top of my hardtop. I have adequate space on my dash, especially if I remove the old combo unit. I can get two separate Color units for the same price as a combo, (Special offer to me). I'm still scratching my head, and other parts, trying to figure what will be best for me. Maybe I over think things, but $$$ are always an important part of the equation for me. My pension is the same as it was in 2000.
