Planer boards Which brand do you use?
Paulywood replied to Boltman's topic in Great Lakes Fishing Discussion
I run Church Walleye boards with an OR-18 clip in the front and an OR-16 clip in the rear if you are talking about running inlines. If you want to run a dipsey farther outside you could get a set of outriggers. I know guys run dipsey's off them but I'm not sure how they do it exactly. I have never run them. -
Nice fish!

My dad purposely went out without dramamine. He wanted to see if he got sick without it. He does. The autopilot worked good. We used it up in Frankfort, too. -
Set up in 50' at 6 am and took a fish right away in 55' on a rigger down 50' with a double crush glow white paddle and BW Glo-Nad fly. Trolled southwest out to 95' and took a fish on a Ace High Canadian on a braid diver on 3 out 125'. Took a rip on a full core with a SS Blue Frog but it was gone pretty fast. We worked all the way south until we were closer to Saugatuck than Holland before we turned around. We worked the 90-120' area and marked a ton of fish down 60' but couldn't get them to go. Headed north and got just south of the channel when a wire dipsey with a green/chrome SD and Sigg's chrome fly went and we landed a 5 lb king. Worked about a mile north of the channel when an SWR w/ a chrome/redhead J-plug down 60' fired. Swung and missed. Turned south and just off the channel the same setup went again. Seemed like a nice fish but it got off about 40' behind the boat. Pulled lines at 11:30 am. My dad had a tough day, went 1/4 on fish and his experiment of fishing without Dramamine was a failure as he tried to chum in a few fish. The good news my grandma's doctor told her to eat salmon to help her eyes. My dad found out that she had been buying it and he offered to drop some off for her. We took her a bag of fillets on the way home and traded them for a couple of bags of homemade donuts! She said next time she'd have some cookies so I think I'll have to make a few trips to grandma's this summer.

If you just want to add a couple of rods to your spread you can throw out a couple of flat lines with 2,3 or 4 oz dive bombs. Spoons in the colors mentioned above would be a good choice. My uncle likes to flat line an orange spoon out 500' down the chute. He swears it cathces fish but I haven't let him try it yet. If you want to specifically target steelies you can troll really fast, like 5-6 mph. Talk to Captain Don (tangled mess) he is a steelhead master.

Good job on the fish! The boat looks great, too. You did a good job, hope she treats you well. -
Tough bite for us too Aaron. I saw you on the way to the launch, we were right next to you at the light and pulled into the Shell station.

Dave, bags are a good idea but I agree with Bromley, you should figure out the motor problem. Start with a can of Seafoam, then either check the settings on the carb or having someone look at it. I don't know much about outboards but I would be worried about being out on the lake with a balky engine. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks Jon! -
If you really like it tell him you agree to buy it as long as everything checks out on the water test. I agree with Steve, I wouldn't buy anything where they specifically won't let you test it on the water.

I was actually planning on using the underwater lights and mounting them inside the cockpit under the gunnels. That would light up the interior of the boat but keep the light below the waist so you don't get blinded or loose your night vision. If you wanted to use the spreader lights you could mount them on your bimini if you have one. I'm not real big on the lights mounted up high, they can be more of a hindrance than a help. If you mount lights it's better if they are below the gunnel or up above your head. If they are at eye level they will always be blinding you. -

Troy, I plan on installing these in my cockpit. They are some of the best I have seen. I was thinking 4 of them below the gunnels should light the interior up perfect. I haven't done it yet this year due to not working. They aren't cheap but should last forever and don't draw much power. How's the boat rigging going? Some pictures would be nice:) http://www.coastalnightlights.com/orders.html -
I can't help you as I don't know anything about running meat. But I can make a suggestion. Call the guys at Big Weenie and ask them for a couple of put together setups. They'll help you out.

I have a 22' boat and have fished in the 4-5'ers but not on purpose. It just isn't that much fun. If the weather report looks good and we head over we usually give it a shot, unless there is thunder. Since I have a 2+ hour drive if I make the trip over I like to try to fish. But I've gone out, done a lap, and headed back in before. Like you said, no fish is worth risking your safety and I don't like to be miserable out there. -
Looks like it's in good shape Dave. Lot's of room to fight fish. That kicker looks like it's older than you and me put together, but as long as it runs. I have a Sea King on my little boat that might even be older than that kicker. Should be a good boat for you.

Nope, just recommended.

I crimped and haven't had a problem with the cable, I did it 3 years ago. I do have a problem with the bead getting caught on the line and stopping it to early. Maybe I will epoxy it to the crimp. Thanks for the idea.

Dave, here is a link to the USCG Boating website. If you go to the safety tab you can do a virtual inspection of your boat. After you complete it it will tell you what you need to add. Once you have it in order you can set up an inspection and get it checked out. http://www.uscgboating.org/default.aspx

Good luck Jim. I went through the same thing this year. Finally had the surgery June 2nd, the doc removed half a disk in my back. I already have the feeling back in 1 leg, but he said it would be longer for the other leg. I had the shots in my back and the spine block. They helped alot until the disk ruptured. Hope you feel better.
