Holland 9/6 Evening

Thanks for taking us Ben, we had a good time. After Eric bent his net handle on the first fish I didn't want to risk it on the 2nd one, so I just grabbed it and threw it in the boat. The guys on the Sylvan watching us gave me a 10 for style points! The one dipsey hit actually rubberbanded the rod back so hard the diver came up out of the water on the aftershock. Nice to meet you Ben and good luck the rest of the season. -

Dave is a reformed lead chucker, now he is on the other side. I agree with Kevin, I will gladly go out of my way to give the pier guys room, but the sailboat turning around in the middle of the channel, he needs to learn some manners. I thought everyone was well behaved yesterday, for the most part. It was my first real "combat fishing" experience and went well. -
I dropped a 7 color core into my prop during the Dreamweaver. I finally had time to fix it last weekend. I ended up replacing all the seals in the lower unit. When I bolted it back together it leaked around the prop shaft. This morning I reseated the seals and they seem to be holding fine. But when I put air into it there is still a leak. I used soapy water but wasn't able to find out where the leak is. Is there anywhere else I should look before taking it back off? Could it be leaking back through the external reservoir now? I was thinking of taking it up to Higgins and running it for a short trip before checking the fluid again. It doesn't hold air at all so that is what has me thinking about the remote reservoir. Maybe I should seal up the cap on it and try air again?

On my boat it would mostly show guys sitting around drinking beer with the occasional trip to the cooler. Sounds like a show I would watch. -
Got invited by a friend to fish aboard the Old Grin charter boat with Captain Denny Grinold yesterday morning. Captain Denny and his first mate Matt did a great job getting us right on the fish and keeping us there. We set up in 100' straight out just outside the pack of boats heading due west. Fished out to 200' straight out to about 3 miles south with the 160-180' stretch seeming to hold the most fish. Big kings up to 20#'s, large coho up to 10#'s, a large steelie around 10#'s and a small laker made up our catch. We ended up 15/21. Not bad with 4 guys on a 4 hour trip. White fishcatchers with white or green flies 60-90 down on riggers and divers, a double fishscale paddle with a white fly 80' down on the chute rigger and standard Stinger size spoons in carmel dolphin, fishhead, NBK, blue dolphin and jager bomb did the damage. It was nice to get out and let someone else do the heavy lifting for a change. Great morning on the water. One neat aspect of the trip was the camera that they have rigged up on the boat. Every time a fish hit they hit record on that camera that is mounted up on the flybridge. At the end of the trip we had 2 hours of camera time burned on a DVD to show people. I won the coveted Old Grin hat for big fish caught on the trip. If you are looking for a charter I would definitely recommend the Old Grin.

It's about time you got out on the water Eric, thanks for the report. -
The Sealine series have a much better drag and will hold up to kings better/longer than the GL or Accudepth's. It really depends on what happened to it. Tuna Tom should be able to tell you what's wrong and if it's worth fixing. Look up Tuna's Reel Troubles in Ludington. I use a few of the 27 size rods in my spread with no issues, but I use the Sealines.

You can't shut me up if you tried! We will be out tonight doing a little prefishing before the Dreamweaver tomorrow. Give me a shout on 68 tonight if you're out. -
Thanks guys!

How long is your leader? I think I remember someone saying that they had proven success running a short leader (like 10') than longer. Parker got me a core setup for Father's Day and it has a long leader in it.

A lot of guys go to more "stealth" setups or meat rigs. Long lines off boards (cores, coppers), SWR's, pulling dipsey's in favor of Slide Divers or Torpedo Divers, light line rigs, longer leads, pulling flasher's and flies or running right down on the bottom can all help catch fish when the sun is up. And that's what seperates the really good fishermen from the rest of us, the ability to catch fish consistently during the day. If there is a simple answer I haven't found it yet. But it sure is fun to keep trying

Thanks for the report, I will be in Muskegon this weekend, hope the fish hang around. -
Welcome Shannon!

Congrats Jon and good luck Sherman.

One option is to buy seperate reels, and use the same rods. I know that rods are cheap but it will save on some money and space. But I don't like using partial cores for the reasons everyone else has stated.

Randy, I have been using this one for over 6 years now and have been very happy with it. A few of my friends have the same model. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=15966&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=11151&storeNum=10103&subdeptNum=10278&classNum=10279

Welcome aboard Brandon! I don't get up to that neck of the woods very often but if I do and have an open seat I'll be sure to give you a call. -
Without going out and measuring one I would guess they are about 8" long. Chartreuse or yellow Spin-n-Glos or flies are a good place to start. I am sure there are guys who know better than me who will chime in soon.
