  1. It's not quite as tall as mikes but this seems to be a nice young deer I've picked up on the trail cam. This is near a spot I was planning on putting a new blind. vpAd3BjGPGU
  2. So I consider myself fairly handy but I could use a little help on this. I can not seem to keep the probe on my cannon snt connected. I've wrapped the wire around the the connection end every way I can think of and it still pulls off. I even zip tied it twice and it still came off. I have the wire longer than the safety cable. I'm not sure what else to do.
  3. Got out Saturday night and Sunday morning. and had two pretty productive outings. We went 3/4 Saturday night with most fish coming in 90-100 fow off the coast guard dock. Flounder pounder was the hot lure of the evening. Action was hot and heavy after the sun dipped below the treeline. Most fish caught within that magic hour. Sunday morning was almost the same with a solid hour just after sunrise and nothing before and little after. we went 4/5Green spatter back glow jplug took two and flounder pounder was hot including a break off near the boat that went somewhere between 5-10 lbs. Most fish were around 5lbs and one small one. Most of the fish have started to turn in the straits. Waters were calm and it was a great trip.
  4. This is a very interesting post to me. I don't know what probe you run but I just installed the cannon snt this year. As stated in a previous post I have had a greater number of tangles this year and most have been on the probe rigger. I even put a 12# ball on that one. I tried running the big jon band buster but this is between the termination and the probe so the coated cable I run to the probe tends to get tangled. I mostly run a stacker about a foot up. I pulled a 5 lber on a jplug for an hour this morning. I can't think of any rationale for these tangles either. I'm baffled as well. The only thing I can imagine is there is a lot of blow back with the probe and maybe it's rising faster than the line and getting up into it. It seems unlikely to me but I can't imagine what else. I always check it just below the surface to check for those tangles. I haven't found any.
  5. I recently installed a cannon snt. I found that it reads on average about .5 mph less than my garmin gps. I used to run 2.4-2.8 on my gps but I'm now running 2.8-3.3 and having greater production. This is about 2.2-2.7 on the cannon.
  6. This may be a little too nit picky but I found it easier to tie the double willis knot by putting one overhand not loosely on the core side and one loosely on the mono side. Maybe it's just my clumsy fingers but before I did this I always seemed to pinch the second knot on the leadcore. Great visuals and explanations on the article. Saved me a tone of time setting up my leadcore.
  7. That's the way I let them out. Dan Keating mentions it in his book and claims that he'll occasionaly pick up an extra fish or two by "fishing" it like this on the way down. I've had that happen twice. It's a nice way to figure out target depth when you get a hit right away.
  8. Yeah there is a good chance of operator error. I've been trying to set them from the front of the boat and I think they are hooking the downrigger line right away. I think from now on i'll set them in the back corner over the downrigger boom. That should get them clear on their descent. Thanks.
  9. Has anyone noticed a difference fishing mags over #1's? I have noticed that every once in awhile I do get a tangle when running #1's on a 2.5-3. I realize that the mags will run closer to my riggers but they don't seem to tangle. I assume the #1's can get pushed by a cross current since there profile is more vertical. Anyone have any experience with this? More importantly has anyone noticed a difference in hook up rate between the mags and the #1s
  10. I hear they have been doing well over there but I don't have any details. I agree with Maniac if I was only going to fish 2hrs it would be 7 pm-9pm or something like that. Or 5am-7am for what it's worth.
  11. Has anyone noticed if there lures were too bright?? What I mean is has anyone gotten hits right away or are they down for awhile before they get hit? I agree daylight seems to work the best for me. I usually take my glows out in the afternoon while we are trolling and let them charge up.
  12. The big one was a blast it went fast and furious out of the gate. I was a little worried when I noticed the spool getting low... There were only 4 other boats out where we were and he was so far back that I was positive one was going to break him off. He surfaced quite a few times. I couldn't gain foot one for at least fifteen minutes. What a blast. He hit off the stacker.
  13. Well couldn't hardly find coldwater anywhere today so we headed to the old standby coast guard dock. I had my buddy mike and his two young sons with me. Fuel was getting low, It was starting to get late and I was worried that stinky striped fellow was going to rear it's ugly head...Just then the downrigger went off and one of the boys brought in a real nice eater...Soon after the other downrigger went off peeling line. Mike and his older boy fought it for awhile before handing it off. 30 minutes and one heck of a fight later we landed fish #2. Shortly after that the deep dipsy goes off and another 30 minute fight with a frisky king. Great day 3/3 and some first timers got to fight some great fish. pm for more info.
  14. I like the explanations and I agree..... However I have not had much success with the lead core. I've run a full core and a 7 color...not one bite (Good chance it's just me though I still believe they'll turn on for me some day. I think they are a great tool to add to an arsenal once you've got your basic spread covered (downriggers, stackers, dipsies, etc.)
  15. Well maybe things are looking up in the straits. We went 3/3 Tuesday night in front of the grand hotel. All 3 kings with the largest a respectable 12 lbs. All fish came in 45-60 ft down in 90-140 ft of water just before dusk. Missed 45 minutes of primetime when the largest King brought up one of our dipsies and a stacked flasher fly rig with him. Made for an interesting tangle. Rather than bore anyone with the rest of the specifics you can PM me for more info.
  16. I haven't heard. Sorry. I do know that they usually run things pretty shallow up there.
  17. The fishing seems to be pretty slow in the straits without many kings being hauled in. Thursday night one coho came off a dipsy with a siggs rigs yellow killer and aqua lime glow fly and one laker Friday morning off a dipsy with siggs rigs ultraviolet chartreuse and kiwi fly. Very few people had multiple fish.
  18. I've fished them a few times out of Detour. They are great to fish getting hit doesn't seem to be the problem but they put up a tremendous struggle for their size but their mouths are so paper thin that it seems to be an exercise in control and frustration to actually land them
  19. I think that would be a tremondous boost to game fish as welling as providing a new sport fish.
  20. I've found charts I guss I'm looking for somethign with the contour lines drawn in.
  21. That's awesome was that off a trail cam.
  22. Does anyone know where you can find or purchase contour maps for the straits of mackinac.
  23. I could be mistaken but I think any west wind will pile warm water up on the west coast. It takes a strong easterly wind to push that warm water out and draw the cold water in. At least that's what I think I remember from "Keating on Kings"
  24. I have two rods I'm trying to decide what to do with. I fish out of a 18' grady white. I used to run two dipsies off of braid and two downriggers with stackers. I also have a half core spooled up for off an inline planer board. This year I set up another braided dipsy to run. Now I'm looking at my rods I used for stacking and I'm considering changing them over to something else. I thought about running a full core and maybe another braid dipsy so I could run 4 braided dipsies (two mags, two #1's) and a half core on one side and a full core on the other off of planers and two downriggers. Any thoughts on reasons to keep rods available for stackers?
