Call them up, ask to talk to the officer, explain what he did, and what it cost you. Otherwise it's just going to happen again. Absolutely no reason the people we pay to serve and protect have no idea of what they are doing. I used to rent storage to an Ottawa County marine sheriff and let's say I put in more water time in on most weekends than he did in a year. Didn't even own a boat outside of work.

Fished Tawas as a guest last Friday morning, warm water everywhere and the fish were scattered after the big blow the day before. We covered a lot of ground and picked up walleye here and there, going 5/6, most fish on 8-10 color cores. Reeling in small walleye on 10 colors is possibly even less thrilling than reeling in lake trout on full cores. But at least every hit pulled the boards back well enough to tell, which lakers sometimes don't even bother with trying. Switched over to Au Gres that afternoon and had a sporting ride in the waves. The boat does not handle them nearly as well at 1.6 as it does at 2.7. Besides cleaning the interior of the boat many times over, we went 11/12 with two big cats, three sheep of various sizes, a small eye, and five keepers from 1.6-3#. Spoons off slide divers were best, had crawlers out too but they mostly caught the farm animals. Wondered what it could have been if I'd put out all plugs and spoons and rolled faster. Best water was on a line from the point to the other point (I don't know the names) in 20-24' of water.

1 color, 1 color, 2 color with 15' of 25# mono in between each color, and another one of those. I troll a lot in close for browns / steelhead / walleye and use these a lot. I can also run them as SWR's on my down riggers, and add snap / torpedo weights to get them down deep if needed. But I can't run a 300' copper in 8'.

My wife said the look on my face when I realized we were upstream from the dam on the river was absolutely priceless. We did manage a 23" master angler cicso by wrestling it from a very determined sea gull on the beach, but being a quasi legal method of procurement we decided not to enter it. And the fact that half the head and gills were pecked away probably would have showed up in the picture you have to submit...

Hit Traverse Bay for the 4th time. First three trips, no fish. Was hoping to get my youngest a master angler cisco as they are apparently just jump in the boat easy to catch. Pull into Elk Rapids, find the launch. But no, there's a wooden boat show, so the launch is closed until 9:30 to allow the wooden boats to do wooden boat stuff. Not a wooden boat in sight. Guy gets kind of jerky with me, so I point out we should have brought the '56 Barracuda instead of the '94 Sea Nymph, and that grandpa was a foreman at the Aniline Road Chris Craft Plant. Then we were friends. So we launch. Only to figure out we are upstream from the dam. Wrong launch. Walk back to get the trailer, put the boat back on it (no wooden boats in sight) and go and find the other launch. My wife explains things to them and they laugh an give us a permit without paying as we paid at the other launch, which was fine, as we actually launched. Head out to 65' which the drop off makes our heads spin. We're Holland flatlanders, 25' of drop per mile, not 50' of drop in seconds. Set up on marks. Troll out of marks, troll back into marks. Set up a flat line, 1 color, 5 and 7 colors, two slide divers and two riggers. Only one tangle. One color goes off, good fish, gets into the 7 color and is gone. Then it goes again, small laker we release. And again. Same. Surmising the lakers are picking off the dying alewives up top, I yank the 5 and 7 colors (never mind all the marks 25-40' down) and put out more flat lines. With thin fish. And rapalas. You can't mimic alewives much better than that. And we get one more hit and it's 60' down on a rigger. Marks dry up. Head into the rocks to look for cisco / browns / bass, troll around in 12' for half an hour until we find a piling that grabs a diver. Pull the other lines, come back to it to untangle it. Kid bails over in the mean time and goes swimming. Get the diver untangled, pick the kid back up, and call it a day. The cisco hunt will resume come October...

Sitting here uploading documentation into two redundant folders, reading your reports and feeling sorry. Appreciate the level of detail.

First trip out yesterday afternoon. Worked the plume then wandered south past Deerlick in 8-15' of water. One maybe hit on a slide diver on a mixed veggies UV Stinger. Gave up on that and went out to 45-50' and worked back to the piers for lakers. That went about as well. Had 47 degree water in close and 44 out deeper, seemed pretty warm for this early...

Now had you been using Schoolie rods, that'd really make a statement.

No luck in the river. Too rough to look for lakers out deep. Water by shore too chalky from the recent blows. Tried in close anyway. Third shot across the pier heads had a big rip on a blue rapala but by the time we woke up it was gone. Log / brown / laker / steel / Nessie who knows? Was good to be out again.

Well what about steelhead / rainbows, crick / creek / brook, tennis shoes / sneakers, and rummage / yard / garage sales?

In summary: running kings and coho, big flashy lures when the fish are in, running. Trout, from now until the water gets warm in the spring, cast lures or fish bait or spawn. They'll move in and out.

Trolling with them = poor man's auto pilot!
