Grand Haven 7-5 AM
mrhookup replied to Wheres Joe's topic in Michigan Waters Fishing Reports - Salmon and Trout
Joe, happy to help share notes in Grand Haven as we've had a solid year out there so far despite the lack of kings. We fished Tuesday night around the piers from 8-10pm with a six rod spread and picked up one king, but was a quite night otherwise. Hit Holland tonight on a friends boat and went 5/10 but fish were deeper as the water warmed from the south winds, 80-100 FOW was best. We should have a nice temp break form over the next week or so with the south winds forecasted which hopefully sets us up for better King fishing. Made it out in Grand haven for a couple of trips heading into the holiday weekend. With the cold water in close we fished the pier heads both days. Thursday night I took a buddy out that hasn't gone since the end of last year. We had lines down from 8-10:30pm and went 3/3 with 2 kings and 1 steelhead, kings were 17lbs and 9lbs. Fish came in the 40-50FOW range. Marked the most bait I've seen all year and all three fish had magnum 7"+ ales in them. Fish came on short coppers and a rigger with moonshine spoons. Saturday morning took my dad out and partook in the combat fishing and ended up 4/7 with 3 steelhead and one 12" king to the boat. Lost another 3 steelhead while they were airborn. Stingray dbl orange crush on a gold blade and UV green dolphin were hottest for us. Water was colder than Thursday night and there was less bait around, only heard of one king caught that was bigger than ours. Fish were holding tighter to the mud/piers as well with the cooler temps.

Fight the fish like the board isn't even there if you have it set to release, good tension at all times and dropping the rod tip when they jump is important with steelhead Sent from my iPhone using Great Lakes Fisherman mobile app- 1 reply

That's a pretty large and heavy boat for an electric trolling motor, long term you may want to look at a 9.9hp kicker which is what we use and it works great at all speeds. As for slower speed lures, jointed Rapalas would be a good option to try when they're near the surface. Stinger spoons troll a bit better at slower speeds than others, especially in the larger Stingray and Magnum sizes. Sent from my iPhone using Great Lakes Fisherman mobile app

I believe this is it... https://capt-chuck.com/shop/fishing-gear/spoons/dreamweaver-spoons-main/dreamweaver-spoons/dreamweaver-dw-1723-hello-darlin/ ...similar to a blue/green dolphin with a different tape job. -
5/19pm - Finished 9/10 with 5 coho, 1 nice king, and 3 shaker kings, also lost a nice king that was part of a double header at dusk. 200 FOW was best, South troll a little better than north. Jager Bomb and Mixed Veggie stingers on coppers and divers up high took the smaller fish. Nicer kings came on flounder pounder and Jager bomb on rigger and diver 45-50ft down at dusk. 5/21am - Finished 8/9 with 3 coho, 3 lake trout, 1 steelhead, and a 5lb king, also lost what was probably a nicer king as well. Set down in 160 FOW and picked up a coho first thing, continued on a west troll out to 225FOW and back to 200FOW with nothing so pulled lines and went back into the 160-170FOW range. Picked up the kings and lake trout in the bottom 20ft of the water column on riggers and divers with spindoctors (chrome with spin n glow, chrome UV crush with chart. dots and mirage fly chart. beads), took the steelhead on a flatline with steelie stomper, and the last couple coho on divers and shallow coppers with Jager bombs. 5/22am - Tougher morning for us but finished 7/7 with 2 steelhead, 3 lake trout, 1 nice king, and a shaker king. Made a west troll from 150-225FOW picking up a steelhead in 200FOW and 220FOW on a 200 copper with Stingray UV Mixed Veggies, the second of which was a nice 9-10lb Skamania. Made the turn and trolled all the way into 145FOW with nothing until we got to 140 and hit a 10lb king on a diver with spindoctor near the bottom. Picked up 3 lake trout off bottom between 120-140FOW but nothing of much size, shaker came on a high diver with UV Wonderbread moonshine standard size. Great weekend of good weather, good company in the boat, and a few fish to hand.

Had lines down from 6:45-9pm last night and finished 9/10 with 5 coho, 1 nice king, and 3 throwback kings, the fish we lost was a nice king at dusk that was part of a double header with the one we put in the box. 195-205 FOW was the most productive for us, South troll a bit better than North but we took hits in both directions. All spoon bite for us, mag mod blue dolphin, mag flounder pounder, jager bomb, steelie stomper, mixed veggies all went. Everything from flat lines to 75ft down on the rigger.

We have about 20-30' of line from our planer boards to the knot where the leadcore or copper starts to allow it to sink just a bit more. Distance from the rod to the planer board doesn't really matter so much, just get them spaced out a comfortable distance from the boat and eyeball it. How'd the tournament go for you guys? Was it in Michigan City?

Made our first trip down to St. Joe on Saturday morning. Got a late start because my crew showed up late so we had lines down at 8am and pulled them at 2pm. Started out front doing circles in and around the mud line with the majority of boats. At 10:30 still didn't have anything going so we decided to pull lines and head deeper looking for trout. Found a shaker king along for the ride and hooked a coho while pulling lines to get the skunk out of the box. Spent the rest of the morning in 65-80 FOW with 70-75 FOW being best, straight out and to the north with a N/NE troll at 1.9-2.3 being the most productive. Picked up 5 lakers including a double header, 2 more coho, and went 1 for 2 on big kings landing a 15lber and losing another of similar size at the back of the boat. Finished up 10 for 11 overall with 5 lakers, 2 kings, and 3 coho. Here's what worked: Fire Tiger J11 - flatline 100' back - shaker king (thrown back) Orange/gold J9 - flatline 100' back - coho Mag Lemon Ice - High diver, 100' leader, out 200' - laker Mag Modified Blue Dolphin - High diver, 100' leader, out 150' - lost king Tin Can/green/chartreuse spin n glow - low diver ticking bottom - laker Tin Can/green/chartreuse spin n glow - low diver ticking bottom - laker Tin Can/green/chartreuse spin n glow - rigger on bottom - laker Tin Can/green/chartreuse spin n glow - low diver ticking bottom - laker 6" red alderton dodger and fly - 30' copper - coho Mag Modified Blue Dolphin - High diver, 100' leader, out 150' - 15lb king Fire Tiger J11 - flatline 100' back - coho Great day on the water and amazing weather for April.
