Fishing after storms is always tough. Any heavy wind with N in it though is going to cool down the water, especially up north because of the shelf. Watch the buoy temperatures and see what they do and then check the water temp in clean water around the pier heads before heading offshore, especially this time of year, the kings could very well be at the piers heads. They were catching fish in PM lake the last couple days without cold water in tight even. If in tight is dead, JD outlines a good plan for running out deep. My big lake boat experienced an accident two weeks ago that totaled both my main and kicker motor. Insurance is covering replacements but I will no longer need this kicker as I'm switching my main over to a 4-stroke with digital controls. For us, spoons go on spoon pads and JPlugs in the Amish outfitters holders, both mount on the inside of the gunnels while fishing and go in their zip up storage bag and into the cabin when not. Paddles, spin doctors, and dodgers go in flasher files, some I custom made to better fit specific flasher/dodger types. Extra pre-rigged flies, meat rigs, and spin n glows get stored in the Amish Outfitters bait head caddy. Body baits go in a rust free Plano box. Extra unrigged flies, beads, meat heads, and spin n glows go in a Plano box. One smaller waterproof/rust free Plano box goes in the back corner compartment of the boat at the transom, this has all terminal tackle. Extra line goes in a Plano line spool box. Planer boards and dipsy divers under the gunnels in the Big Papa Sports planer pockets and diver duffle. This system has worked well for us. My first passion is fly fishing as well, been doing it since I could walk so the guiding the line thing wasn't and issue for me, but when you take friends and have to explain over and over what you mean by that well it just doesn't end well. Again on downriggers with mono it wasn't an issue tho. We run 20lb for spoons and 30lb for flashers on our rigger rods. I keep an extra set of reels and swap out depending on what I'm using. If I had to pic one I'd go with 25lb but run fluorocarbon. If you search my older posts on here you'll see some pictures of my rigs before I switched back over. We ran mooching reels on riggers and board rods for two years, started using them on our small 16' boat running 6-8 lines and they worked well. Diawa M-One have stronger drags than the Shimano's and they don't have creep, the Shimano's were almost unusable for that reason. We just switched back over to conventional stuff this last May/June because they were too much work using with 4 planer boards per side on our new bigger boat. We even ran copper off of them but the 1:1 just is too inefficient to make that fun and if you get a newbie on the rod they forget to watch where the line is going on the reel; with no line guide we had a lot of instances where it piled up on one side. That isn't a problem with 20lb mono though so they always worked well for riggers. As for the rod, those big long mooching rods aren't needed IMO, we literally used 7' Cabela's Whuppin sticks and they were a blast to catch fish on. Silver Horde Ace Hi or Dreamweaver Captain's Choice are in the water for us 90% of the time we're fishing plugs. Had a little better luck late season around the pier heads with the Dreanweavers last year, their rattle is louder with a higher pitch and it seemed like that's what they wanted last year more. Colors that work year in and year out late July thru September are Green or Blue Splatter Back, Green Lightning, Yellow Lightning, MOP Black dots, Glow, Yellow Tail, The Grinch, Chrome Redhead, Green Ladder back, Easter Egg. We run the same as Killerbe20 and have for a long time. The only thing I don't like is the amount of blowback below 100ft as was mentioned. We found ourselves having to go down there a lot more this past year so may try some torpedo's next season. There's a couple guys on the Lake Ontario United forums that make torpedo weights for a very reasonable cost with shipping if those are of interest.
