help aerator goes on and off???????
silver one replied to tracker targa's topic in Boat Maintenance and Rigging
If there is a switch that controls it on and off then it is the switch. If the switch is in the off position and it kicks on then the switch is bad. -
which fish finder/chartplotter do I keep
silver one replied to KingMe's topic in Salmon Pro's Connection
I would keep the Hummingbird. Have been dissappointed with lowrance over the years. -
Depends. If I am tournement fishing I will set a rigger first and at the same time let a disey out with the drag set to let it tic back while the rigger is going down. Reason is that alot of times the two hitting the water at the same time will trigger a strike which has happened to me many times while the rod is in my hand. Especially if the fish are high in the water colum. You can usually get your riggers fishing almost as soon as you set down and then let the long lines out. Not everyone does this way but alot do. hope that helps you. good luck.

Nice job Dad. You need to be carefull with putting hooks in your hand. that is way to many times this year and Kim wants to know if you have had a T shot. -

hey pop what was Terry using for the perch. Minnow? -
I have never had a leader break off of an albright not going to copper. and I put nothing over it. I have done it with alluminium anodized guides and roller guides. also with. if the knot is tied correclty you should barley have a tag end. I see what you are getting at and it is not a bad thought Just dont think it is necessary. Good luck.

Ive never tried it with alder chips. might try mixing it in with what I use. another good wood to smoke with is pear wood from a pear tree. use it while it is still a little green. I have done this with Venison Jerkey mixed with some cheery and hickory and you could actually taste the sweetness of the pear wood in the Jerkey. Very good flavor. thanks for the feedback.

Motor not getting water on startup
silver one replied to Fuddly's topic in Boat Maintenance and Rigging
Is the thermostat opening all the way and the water stopping there and not getting to the cooling manifold? -
That is sweet. There is nothing funner than catching bull bluegills. thanks for sharing

I did put some sea salt on the fish before I put it on the rack in the smoker as mentioned in the post. yes you need salt to cure the fish. I thought we were talking about blood sugar. sorry.

I have smoked fish for years and used brines and also not used brines. some of the best fish I ever made came right out of the lake and on the smoker. for fish with no brine use a cherry, apple, and pear wood all together. The cherry gives it the smokey wood falvor and the apple and pear give it a little sweetness with out the sugar. I did put some sea salt on the fish before I put it on the rack in the smoker. Not alot just a bit. It was interesting becuse I did salmon, laketrout and steelhead and the steelhead was the best of the three for non brined fish. the salmon was also good the laketrout was greasy. but had a decent flavor. whitefish is the best when using no brine.

Nice catch. If it were not April 3rd I would think that looked like a mid may catch. -

Way to put the smack down on them pop's. Did you use any of the those flys that you tied. and if so how did they hold up. -
I to am going to go with berts on my new boat. after doing alot of research I have decided that a track system will be the best way to go with the new 1850 sprotfish by crestliner that I bought. I would love to see everyone's set up to help me with Idea's on layout. I have a pretty good Idea as I have been around salmon boats most of my life but I am always looking for a better Idea. If your willing please share what you have? Here was my last set up that I rigged minus the tr 3 trees that I just did not have on when I took the picture. On this boat I used Ram rod holders. there were ok for everything but dipseys. you could lock them down but after a while they would start to creep out of position. I made all of the plating and did all of the machining myself. that was half the fun of rigging it. to see how you fair up against other small time engineers like us.

one of the best baits there is in the spring for ho's. I run them using clean mono long lines with walleye boards or will run them on the rigger 6 to 8' behind downrigger ball. Red tiger and gold with orange back are the only two I really run. Make sure like the other guys said that they are Brads thin fins with the rattle. Good luck.

My guess is that Neil is in Florida as he goes every year. He is a great guy but not what you would call a global business man. He will get back with you. Just might take a couple of weeks. I am going over to his place early next week and I will let you know if he is around. It is on my way home from work and I need to order new riggers for the new boat.

purchased the Humminbird ice 35 back in feb for ice fishing that never happened around here but when I was dont putting it all together it was running backwards. I will say Humminbird was quick to email me fed ex prepaid shipping and had a new unit shiped back to me with in 7 days. I also had a garmin 250 unit go bad back in 05. the bad thing is that when I contacted them I had to send them everything back including the transducer. which meant I had to uninstall it and then reinstall it again. Make sure when you cantact humminbird that they dont want the whole thing back. Garmin would not warranty my unit without all of the parts that came with that unit. Not sure about humminbird.

Ditto. West Marine is a chain store and you can order everything on line from them. However I find overton's to be a better priced store with alot more to choose from and if you want something specific then buy directly from the manufacturer. As far as buying local. I am all for it, but not every town in america has a sore around the corner with a place to buy what you need to equip a boat for the big lake.

Here is a report from a trip out of st.joe with what we run. took a 4 man limit that day and if I went back out that time of year I would run the exact same program for spring coho. This program is prettymuch how anyone who has expirence in spring coho will set up. hope this helps and yes do run alot of clean mono high lines. that early with that water temp you dont need to be down more then a couple of feet. Riggers work great in that time of year as coho are attracted to the sound of boat motors. run everthing 10' or less off of the ball of the rigger. here it is Had the whole program going. Took fish in OO orange dogers and sigs coho candy penut fly on 1 color swr on boards. took fish on thinfins on longlines and boards.took fish on orange chartruse and red rapalas. took fish on hot n tots and tad pollys on the riggers 8' behind the ball 9' down. Hot n tot was a clown color and tadpolly was chartruse and orange. Hot n tot took 7 fish on the rigger. Set lines at 8:00 pm and was boxed out by 1:30. Wind kicked up and took over an hour to get back to the piers in 3 to 5s. Best depth was 16 to 20' and took fish from junk cars all the way to the power plant. 50 back behind the board and 150,100 and 75 out on the boards was very productive all in all great day. here is the pics of that day.

If you go to fishing reports on this web site. most guys who report there trips will say in there report what they are running for a spread. I have posted alot myself and find that most of us are running pretty much the same program. you can target this by looking at when the post was made. Date, month and time. hope this helps get you some answers quicker.

Whats your favorite brand of downrigger
silver one replied to mattmishler's topic in General Discussion
I prefer the walkers. I would also not hesitate to buy Cannons. like anything they will last, as well as, you take care of them. they are all going to have mechanical an electrical issue at some point however my walkers were 10 seasons old and worked flawlessly with no issues. -
Sweet looking ride. Hews is a great boat.

Thanks guys with the new boat I have been researching alot of products. I have had alot of vendors try and steer me towards humminbird but my gut keeps leading back to the lowrance elite HD 5. anyone use hummin bird have input. I like humminbird features but feel it might be overkill for what I am doing on the big lake if I were a serious bass fisherman i feel like humminbird would be the way to go.
