  1. Welcome Great Lakes Fishermen!  We run a small online tackle shop, GL-Tackle.com.  Each season we field test new stuff, the ones that catch the most & get the best feedback go into next season's production run.  Thank you for sending in the pictures and tips w/ setups & what worked for you, very much appreciated & helping other fishermen for sure!

Okay, good luck out there and tight lines!

  6. interesting question & comments - thinking behind the longer leads and slide divers is to add more stealth, but what about the opposite, short leads behind the dipsey w/ spin doctors/flys seems to produce too, anyone had luck more so one way or the other? we've hand lined quite a few - always exciting
  7. Hi JDH, one more thought, from your spoon pic w/ the ladderbacks, fluorescent, non UV, shows up very bright under blacklight - was wondering what this would look like down deep (what the salmon see?) Does anyone remember running fluorescent painted spoons before UV was available? sounds like a fun field testing challenge -
  8. Hi JDH - I thought maybe the gold & silver spoons reflected light more so than nickel plated spoons? Non-UV, but very flashy, maybe good to run during bright days? The pic is a std chartreuse Mister Twister tail under black light - really lights up, is this considered UV or fluorescent or are they the same? On same topic, notice many glow spoons seem to light up nice under blacklight too, so some UV properties here too? Thanks for starting this one, hoping for more to weigh in too! Fishknocker
  9. "Still getting clean kings!!! GL-Tackle red headhunter spoon and fireflies jellyfish still catching." "Team meals on reels getting on the kings while setting lines!!! Tom S. - FishKnocker - GL-Tackle.com (pike pic from Eagle Lake, Ontario - were field testing, this spoon outfished our daredevils & husky jerks 6:1 - Joey caught (10) pike or so)

  11. Nick Hutchinson w/ Ain't No Joke Productions fishing out of Racine, WI: "Went out tonight with 1 purpose and that was to catch kings!!! GL-Tackle spoons did all the work! UV DepthRaider, Zombie Apocalypse and HeadHunter SuperGlow did most of the damage. These spoons are awesome!" "Six kings in 53 minutes - was a little chaotic!" Thanks Nick!!! 12. Sorry about that - I agree w/ the comments, sometimes we get pics in from customers w/o the details, conditions... still excited for them, put a nice king in the box w/ one of our lures! Also, spoke w/ Chad Lapa, he set us up w/ a link to update the banner ads - should be up now for here & Lake Ontario United. And I agree w/ the donations & support, we have spent a lot on advertising and tackle giveaways for tournament sponsoring, we do not always see the return in orders, but is part of the business & getting the word out, mostly enjoy the feedback when we are helping someone put fish in the box! 13. "HeadHunter Green is working for the Kings. Gonna have to get a few more. Thanks Tom for a great spoon!" Captain Craig Keller, 8-9-16, fishing out of Traverse City, Daydreamer Fishing Charters, http://www.fishdaydreamer.com/ Thanks Capt. Craig!
  14. hang in there, you will be hooked up soon! lot's of good tips above, 2.9gps speed works good for salmon, run that one flasher behind the dipsey at all times, I think the flasher gets them in from quite a distance - some guys laugh, but we've had some luck running dipsey, flasher & spoons - NW Pacific style, 42" leader to spoon. we haven't had too much luck this year w/ downriggers, seems like all the hits lately on the dipseys. I agree w/ the early morning, 120-130' back on #3 settings, working out to 240' or so mid morning to mid afternoon - sometimes turning will trigger the followers, s-curves or big figure 8's if not too many other boats, then remember the angle when you get the strike -
  15. Nice Brown! John & Nathan Comar fishing North side of Green Island out of Marinette, Sunday - HeadHunter Red Super Glow on a Dipsey! Thanks guys! Tom Schultz http://gl-tackle.com/

  19. Tried a different setup for us, NW Pacific style, this small salmon hit a flasher-spoon rig, 60" leader from the flasher to the spoon, 30# fluorocarbon, 150' back on the downrigger, 40' down, 120 fow outside the mouth in Kewaunee, WI - Tom Schultz http://gl-tackle.com/home

  20. Good discussion, I remember when the salmon were introduced, we had overabundance of smelt & alewives, also remember each port town had a fleet of commercial fisherman, and catching 2 perch on a double hook rig was common, for the spring smelt & sucker runs, my grandpa said this is God's gift to the poor - anyways, I think if we want to see the Salmon rebound, we might have to look lower down on the food chain - more phytoplankton & zooplankton to feed the small bait fish? We all remember when Lake MI started to clear up - had to do w/ the invasive mussels & now dealing w/ Spiny Sea Fleas - maybe in the Baltic where the invasives came from there is plankton that is resistant? For the dollars spent on planting, I would like to see some put into spawning & rearing habitat to improve the natural reproduction? And maybe some more planting from NW Pacific stock, to improve the genetic diversity? On a good note, the last two years have seen the Lake level rising, am thinking this will be good for small fish habitat, and help the salmon & trout?
  21. Nice link from MI DNR - can click at the bottom "Lake Trout techniques for open water trolling" http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10364_53405-214030--,00.html
  22. We've been getting some good feedback on these glow spoons for Lakers lately, no one said how deep or how far back?
  23. Some of the flasher brands do not have the angled rotating fin - they still rotate if trolled fast enough - and possibly if the meat rig is not too heavy? Question - do most guys use a loop knot & tie your fly directly to the split ring on the flasher? or use a snap or ball bearing swivel? thinking w/o the swivel on the fly end would give better action? not sure -
