  1. If you are only running one, you can forego the board and run it straight behind the boat. It may get in the way at times though. If you run a board I prefer to run a mono backer as the boards seem to hold better. You can run spoons, plugs or paddles. The way the fish are now, paddles are the way.
  2. Not unlike the fishing, not much has seemed too consistent. However, every trip has blue/green spin doctor with a blue fly, and a pearl paddle with a white fly on the bottom of the riggers. Those seemed to have caught the majority of the bigger fish
  3. We went out last night, started at 80 heading SW hit 130, had a white spin doctor and white fly down 85 go, Snapped the swivel in two. kept going south for awhile, nothing, turned in to head north. 90 FOW Same rigger went. Wife caught her first salmon!! Before I could get that unhooked the high line same rigger went. J=plug, green Splatter back orange belly. She fought that one too. Not much fight, til the back of the boat. I was a bit surprised when I saw it. Netted that one. Never had a chance to weigh it though, it was 36 inches. I got the fish unhooked, but it and the lure were both tangled in the net. Would like to say I am hooked on huge salmon, but not through the thumb nail top down. I have looked at the pictures of the other two 30 pounders caught this week. I am not sure what this weighed, but I have to believe it is close. It does not look as big holding it vertical, but my other hand did not feel like holding it horizontal.
  4. Thanks for the report. Yesterday was not so great for us yesterday. If it could go wrong, IT DID. Guy with the net stunk, stuff breaking. Whining aside. 6 of 7 hits came on Meat, 5 of those on divers out 170 on 3. Spoons yesterday, 7 in the water, not one hit. Got a report from the boat this morning, all flies on paddles and Spin Doctors, 300 copper. 2 kings over 20, plus a 14. 120FOW.
  5. I bought a bag at cabelas. It is green, has a divider in the middle, two boards go great on each side of the soft divider. It also has an additional area on it for other items. It works great, as it is soft it does a great job of protecting them.
  6. I am not saying I am right, but we run around a 30' leader.
  7. sounds like a great trip!! Took the wife out for her first time last night as well. Not as successful as you were. Lost one off the rigger, then she fought one for over 15 minutes on the 300' only to watch the one pop too. Would have loved for her to have boated one of them.
  8. We were out last night. Sea Fleas terrible. We Couldn't boat a fish if our life depended on it. 0-4. Two of them we fought for over 15 minutes each. Hits on Carmel Dolphin on the rigger down 45. 300 copper Blue Dolphin. and 225 copper. Had a quick rip on the 150 copper with an orange crush. Slightly frustrating.
  9. second good report in as many days. Friday cannot come soon enough!!
  10. I am a fan of longer rods, until it's time to store them all. The longer rods feel better to me, more leverage and control. I am not a fan of broom sticks.
  11. Thank God!! Good to hear. Appreciate the report.
  12. Those flies are great! Every time you have your hands full one nails you. It's almost like they know.
  13. Jims theory worked well in grand haven last night as well. Everything seemed to be in shallow. And the fog popped up there last night too. Sure made having the radar nice. Fishsniffer, tried the orange dodger and a orange fly no luck on that one. But it looked good!!
  14. Went out last night, Started setting lines just before 6. Everyone was right outside the pier heads. There went our whole game plan, 300 coppers went away the 150s both came out. Started setting in about 40-45 FOW. Got two Planers, 150 and 225 out, one diver, started on the other side with the first board and heard the other side start ripping. Thought man this is going to be a great night we can't even get our lines in the water. Boated a pretty decent King, not huge, but real nice. Spoon on the 150, spoon looked like a Christmas tree. Got all of the lines set. Flies were terrible, then the Fog set in, a couple of times we were not sure we weren't going to get run over. fished the next 3 hours with nothing, a bit after 9 rigger down 30' with a carmel Dolphin went, before I could even grab it the fish was 3 ft out of the water, landed him, 8lb steelhead. Within 5 minutes the other 150 went, smaller steelhead, spoon green white and orange. both of those fish were right around 80 FOW. 3-3 felt pretty decent considering all of the reports.
  15. TX-44 pulls 300' with no issues
  16. Went out this morning, Everyone seemed to run out to 150' and start there. We set up kept heading deeper. Marked fish at all depths, and A LOT of them!! Seemed to mark the most around 200'. They were there, just not very cooperative. We ended up 3-6. Two were small, real small, like no idea they were on small. The third was a decent steelhead, and fought like one too. Two we lost were steelhead, and quite acrobatic, the third we never saw. We had hits on 300' copper on boards twice, 150' copper down the shoot once, down rigger down 125 Green SpinDoctor, white fly, Blue SpinDoctor Blue fly down 60', White and Black spoon down 40'. Trolling back in, when we hit 120' we never marked another fish.
  17. Going out Saturday AM. Hopefully it will be a nice morning with a bunch of fish!! I'll get ahold of you.
  18. THanks for the report. Stopped down there this afternoon. Looked like every captain was hiding.
  19. I saw your other boat Saturday morning, he was in so shallow I thought he may hit bottom!!! We got a bit of action in the dirty stuff, but it was a rough morning.
  20. Started setting Lines about 6AM. Most were not going out too far. We marked some about 30' down between 85 and 95 FOW. No takers. Everyone seemed to move in, so we followed. Saw a few being caught, most didn't look like salmon from a distance, more like small bass. We finally got some action around 11AM, caught the first one without a release from the rigger, down around 30', A HUGE one, had to be a 10 incher. Then had a triple, lost the first one, the second was a 11LB king on a diver, the third was another small one on a diver. Let the two small ones go. All of the action we had was in the 50-60 FOW area. Black and White spoon, Orange Crush, and a white glow spoon with a bit of orange and green. Overall pretty slow.
  21. we didn't really get any action in GH until about 11.
  22. Big Jon Brute. Fishing hunting USA is a site sponsor. $599 I believe.
  23. I'm with Dave on the setup. But run with Ed's idea. My guess is you will win.
