Hmmm you guys have given me a lot to think about. maybe I am better off with the 2 riggers. right now I can run up to 3 dipsys per side (but usually run 2) and boards if I need to along with the 2 riggers. I think I will just forget about them and work on perfecting my current spread. I have not bought them yet.

I want to run this by you guys. Right now I have 2 short arm Walker electrics that I run off the sides. They are in the back corners. I am getting 2 more 4fters to match and run those as my boom riggers. The issue I am going to have is the corner rigger on the kicker side. I am afraid my rigger cable will get fouled in my kicker. What are your suggestions? Maybe angle that corner rigger at 45 degrees? or just run it off the side like I do now? this is the best pic I could find on my pc, I can get better pics this weekend, I am bringing the boat home to do some work on it thanks

its only about $10. I dont think thats out of line. I am buying some other stuff from an online tackle place, I will just add it to the order. I would rather be safe than sorry thanks

update- I tried putting it in a bucket of water and it works. So that is a good sign!!!

thanks. I did download the manual for it which is very derailed and helpful. I cannot get it to read by holding the probe close to the t/d but I am not going to worry about it. I will get it hooked up to the boat and hopefully try it this weekend. I take it I should get the breakaway cable for the dowrigger weight? Or is there another setup you guys use? thanks

thanks Ryan thats good to know. I just brought it home. I was a little concerned that the display would be hard to read for my old eyes, but its ok. I did not realize that it had a backlight. I hooked the transducer up and at least the speed wheel and temp sensor are working. I put a battery in the probe and the red light is flashing, so I am hoping this means its ok. According to the directions I downloaded, they state that you may or may not be able to hear the probe clicking, I cant, but my ears are almost as bad as my eyesight.

well, I stumbled across an 840 for $200. Its in real good shape. I figured since they have the upgrades available it would be ok. Other then it going through batteries and watching for water intrusion, is it a solid unit? From the searching I did I did not find out a whole lot, but what I did it seems to be a good unit.

I appreciate all the thoughts. I think what I will do for now is leave my old trusty shorter dipsy rigs alone. They have served me well and I feel kind of attached to them. I have barely used the 10ft Cabelas rods. Maybe I will just get a set ot Twilli's for them and see how I like the wire. If I do I can always either upgrade the tips to torpedos (if I feel the need) or get different rods altogether.
-
Great replies!! many thanks!! I think I will wait and get dedicated rods and not put tips on my existing dipsy rods for this. Ryan, yes they are the old all black 47's.
-
ok, I understand Ryan was speaking of copper when he was saying the 47's were not big enough.
-
ok as was mentioned I should have said stainless wire, not copper. thats how much I know about this... On the reel capacity, if the wire is thicker than say, 65lb PowerPro what advantage does it have other than flea resistance? I can fit plenty of 65lb PowerPro on my 47's. So the wire must be much thicker. I looked on the Torpedo site linked to, it does not give the wire diameter. I do have 2 leadcore setups on Penn 330's for that. I am not doubting anything being stated, just trying to understand if its worth it to me to use it or to just stick with PowerPro setups.

Hi guys I am setting up my salmon program after a long layoff. I am turning my attention to my dipsy setups. Right now I have 2 8ft dipsy rods with PowerPro 65lb test and Diawa 47lc reels. This setup as worked fine for steelies on Erie. I just purchased 2 more like new 47lc's off a swap board. I do have 2 Cabelas 10ft dipsy rods that I am going to put the reels on. I am thinking about trying copper on them, or on the shorter rods if thats a better choice. I have read the threads on wire and I do appreciate the thoughts in those threads. I think these will only see occasional use, but I dont really know. Other than the fleas, what advantages are there to wire over PowerPro? I know guys who swear by it, so I am sure its worth it. Then theres the tip, Twilli or Torpedo? And what line should I get, I see Blood Run is recommended, I am not sure, and dont know what test. Where is the best place to buy this online? thanks again for your continued help...

cannon balls, depth raider probe storage
perchjerker replied to perchjerker's topic in Salmon Pro's Connection
Yeah. I was just at Bass Pro at lunch and picked up a Cannon terminator kit. They had Scotty riggers there and one had the hook on it, it looks like it would work good. -
cannon balls, depth raider probe storage

thanks guys for the replies. I could not find the vector hooks but did come across some made by Scotty. I could make those work, I may order a few and try them if I dont use my ball babies -
Not really sure where to put this thread, hopefully this is the right place. Thanks for all your recommendations on my question on speed and temp probes, I am getting a Depth Raider. I started thinking about my downrigger weights. I have 2 Walker electric short booms on each corner of my Grady White Adventure 208. They are attached directly to the gunnels on swivel bases. The question is what I do with my downrigger weights? Right now I just lean over and grab the weight, loosen the drags, and set them in the corners on the deck in a bucket when running. This is not the best way, maybe I should crank the ball all the way up, then swivel the rigger so its in the boat, then put the balls in the buckets? I do have 2 Ball Babies that I had on my old boat, I had them mounted on a transom board next to the riggers. I guess I could put them next to the riggers on the gunnels? Will 14lb fish shaped weights stay in them while I am running? I might be able to space them on the gunnel so I can just swivel the rigger over the ball baby and lower the ball into them. I have seen other rigs with hooks on the booms, that seems like a good idea, I dont know if that is something I can install on my old Walkers? Then there is the Depth Raider probe. Is that just going to hang there from the ball if its a holder? I dont want it to get beat up, what do you guys do with yours? Any suggestions on all my questions would be greatly appreciated. Actually I would like to get longer booms one of these days...

Looks like the jury is in! Depth Raider it is!!!

thanks for the info on the cable. I decided to look more into the Sub Troll just so I dont overlook something. There are some things that I do like about it. I do like the analog display, it seems like it would be more durable than the digital display. Does it use the standard downrigger cable or a coated one? The website isnt real clear on this. Does the Depth Raider digital readout float around like a gps speed readout? I thought I read somewhere that it did not.
-
thanks guys very interesting thoughts. I think the Depth Raider is the unit for me. I only run 2 riggers, and I was not planning on switching it to the other rigger. I am not real crazy about the coated cable idea, but sounds like its not much of a problem. Josh- Were did you get the new non coated cable? I did not know that was available, I do not see it on the Kell Labs site. Just curious. I cant really justify the extra money for the Fish Hawk. I dont really want to spend more on something that I have to, it frees up money for other stuff I dont need but have to have

Dang it the sickness is back. After years of walleye fishing I bought a cabin in Manton and started salmon fishing again after about 10 years off. I got a few last weekend after going out for the first time since buying the cabin. Now I find myself wanting this and that. I am looking at Speed and Temp probes and like what I see in the Depth Raider. The Fish Hawk is nice too but kind of expensive for me. The Moor Sub Troll looks ok too but seems like old technology, but if it is better, then I need to know. Is the Depth Raider a good unit? I did see a few posts on it and guys seemed to like it Is that still the case? Get out the debit card? I found it at Franks and Marine General for $399 but it would cost me less at Marine General; cheaper shipping and no sales tax. thanks
-
wow thanks for the warm welcome!!! actually (dont tell anyone) walleye fishing is ok, Erie is close so that what I got into. But I have SALMON in my blood!!! I did get into Erieau and Wheatley for a few years for steelhead, but I got sick of dealing with the border crossings.

looking for instructions for old digital depth probe

wow thats great!! I will pm you my email also thanks!!! -
Hey guys I am just getting back into salmon fishing after a few years away from it. Going through my tackle, I came across this temp probe. It does not have a name on it and I dont remember what it was called. Its green. Oblong shaped. Digital readout. I think it was just called a digital depthfinder. Kind of looked like a plastic digital stopwatch with buttons on the edges. It works on the same principle as the Fish Hawk clip on unit that I am seeing for about $150 Anyway it was kind of confusing to use without the directions. And I do not have them anymore. I would like to try using it again, it did work pretty good.. Does anyone of the directions for this or know where I can download them from? Or can you help me with how it works? I can take a pic of it when I get home from work if that helps thanks

Hey guys. I found this site from a mention on GLA. I wish I would have found it earlier, but now I am here! the name is Brian, I am from Dearborn and have a cabin in Manton I fish out of my Grady White Adventure 208 I am also a moderator on Walleye Central, some of you will probably recognize me from there. thanks
