True, it was tough boating fish today for the Big Red Classic Women's tournament, but a large factor behind that was the 2-hour delay to avoid a thunderstorm in the area. 6:30-8:30 is prime fishing time and we were sitting in the harbor for safety reasons.

Erik nailed it - you saw the group of boats headed out for the Tuesday night league. Erik normally fishes with us on Tuesday, but he was busy that night. Too bad, because we did go 11 for 16. We caught most of our fish in 120 FOW just off Holland on a mix of lures and line types. Meat rigs worked well, as did coppers and 10-colors. Others in that area also had good success - our box was bested by at least 2 other boats that night. We found a pocket of fish and kept circling - I wish that happened more often!

Now that's a nice fish!!! Congrats on getting him in the boat.

You have mail. I'll repeat it here for the benefit of other posters. Ed, I saw your post on the Great Lakes Fisherman forum describing the buoy and the need to gather both usage info as well as donations for 2013. I accessed the buoy's info at least once a day all summer. I find it is a valuable tool for watching lake conditions and making decisions on whether to venture out for a fishing trip. If you find an organization that is willing to pool donations, please pass along my commitment for $100 each year for the next 5 years. Brad IMHO, a buck a day (less if you extend the fishing season) is a good investment in having solid information about lake conditions prior to heading out. I spent more than that on an auto-inflate PFD.

Thanks, guys. We had fun! The boat gets pulled on the 15th, so I'm trying to pack in as much late-season fishing as I can. I hope the lake cooperates -- the next few days don't look good, though. Here's a pic of my dad and his friend Don on the boat this summer. My dad's in the dark shirt and as I said, will be 87 next month. His friend Don is 89. They had a ball that day. A few minutes after the picture was taken, Dad reeled in a 17-pound King.

Luckily, i was able to get my boat off the lift this morning and fired up for a morning of fishing. We spent the morning unsuccessfully dodging raindrops -- it was pretty wet out there! Nice flat water, though. We ended up 3 for 4. The fish were in a pretty tight band from 135-140 FOW, at least where we were (directly off Holland). Lots of marks in that band, though. 50-degree water was down about 100 feet. We took a 12-pound King early on a downrigger with a blue-nosed Flounder Pounder. Next up was a 12-pound Laker on the wire Dipsy 250 back with a blue-speckled J-plug. Last one in the boat was a fatboy, an 18-pound Laker caught on the 450 copper with a green ladderback flasher and green Poofster fly. We joked about finding a way to rig up and drag a kitchen sink! It was a great way to spend the morning with my dad. He'll be 87 next month and still loves to go out as often as he can. We've been hitting it together at least twice a week since mid-July. Precious times! :)

Thanks for the update. It sounds like the fish moved in a bit from last week's 200-250 FOW zone. Good thing! I'll be back in Holland on Wednesday and looking to head out as many times as possible before pulling the boat on the 15th.

There may be some good action in and near the channel. Not much between that and the deep, though.

We went out of Holland both of the last two days. Wasted our day yesterday starting our troll in 120, looking for cold water and fish. We finally found 45-degree temps & fish at about 200 FOW, but the bite was over. The 60-65 degree water, surface to bottom, went all the way out to 190 FOW. This AM went straight to 200 FOW and went 3 for 5, working 200-250 FOW. Rough water probably screwed up our desired troll direction/speed or we would have done better, I think. We did pick up a nice 13-pound Brown, though. Hits were on 300 & 450 copper, two on the pearl flasher/fly, one on green ladderback flasher & green fly.
