There is a group of us take a week long trip up to the BoQ the last week in May. We will be targeting primarialy walleye, but was wondering if we can get into some salmon up that way. If I think there is a chance we can get into some salmon either in the mouth of the bay or out on the lake than I will take all my trolling gear with me.

How much line do you run on your leadcores? How much do most of you run on say your all superline reels?
-
I currently have convectors and magda pros in the 30 size. I need some more reels. I am wondering if I should get some 45 size for my leadcores. I have a 6 color and a 4 color right now and they fill the reels. The 6 color is almost too full. I want to set up two more leadcores, and maybe switch my other ones over. What are most of you running for size of reels? On another note I run almost all PowerPro 40lb(besides my DR reels) and am wondering how much backing you are running behind the leadcore? Also how much do you run on your all PP reels? Also up to how many colors do most of you pull behind inline boards? I got a lot of fall back pulling 6 colors but would like to pull 10.

Whats Your Favorite Brand of Spoon for Lake Erie
anmetcalf replied to GLF's topic in Lake Erie Discussion
I will agree with you Storm. I know that they have worked hard to try to get this problem taken care of though. I also know that others that had problems have emailed them and they do there best to help out(we all know that that still isn't ideal when you have 100s of spoons). Still the MI Stingers will outfish most all spoons on the western basin. At least from my experience. I can tell you that MI stinger's chicken wing out by West Sister 1.7-2.2mph was killing them. -
thanks for the info guys. After reading the forums a ton I decide to try dangerdans for my first attempt at smoking. I am planning on basting a couple of them towards the end with a little brown sugar. I am also going to try a little cajun seasoning on some.

I am getting ready to smoke my first batch of salmon. I will be actually smoking this evening. I have read a ton about it and I think I have a good brine(it if brining as I type this). I have an electric smoker. I know about what tempeture to smoke at and what temp to smoke to. What I need to know is do I fill up the water bowl and how much wood do I use? It has a big bowl for water and a smaller bowl for wood. I am planning on using cherry and apple. thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.

We ended up going 9 for 9 (the 9th being really small and going back) We ran straight out from the pier head to 60ft of water and set lines. We were marking a large amount of bait in the 50-70 range. We got all 6 lines in the water and didn't have a single hit until about 6:00. By that time we had hit 100 feet of water and turned south and trolled SW. We trolled the 110 for the next couple hours picking up a total of 7 fish. We caught them from 30ft to 85ft down. Our Slasher with NBK fly took 3 fish and that was ran on a dipsy 110 back set on 1. Our port side downrigger had the Killer tangerine on it 40 feet down and that took 3 as well. Our 6 color core took one with Tourney winner on it. Our full core took one with FN wiggle on it. And the last fish we took in 150ft of water and I do not recall on what spoon.

I too want to thank GLF for setting this up. We had a great time fishing it and its always fun when you get to meet new people as well. Since we got so lucky on our first try you just might see us agian. Again thank you to GLF and MI Stinger. Also whenever that new spoon(killer tangerine) is available let me know I am interested in a couple of them.

Slasher with NBK fly took 3 for us. Killer Tangerine took 2 or 3 (can't remember) Tourney winner took 2 And from the sound of things both sea-mac and I caught a 3000lber plus on Glow Puke

Muskegon 8.11.07
anmetcalf replied to Dv8oR's topic in Michigan Waters Fishing Reports - Salmon and Trout
If I'm not mistaken he weighted in 5 fish. I believe he had 6 kings in the box and only 2 people on his team. -
Went 6 for 8 in the am all kings. Ran out to 65ft and had lines set at 5:30. Had all our fish by 7:30 and only one release after that. 3 fish came one a variety of moonshine spoons running on riggers at 50ft and 25ft down. one came on a dipsy set at 1 with 140 out, moutain dew spin doctor, glow white fly. One came on lead core 6 colors NBK. Our 6th one came on a full core with glow green J-plug while I was attaching the board , wow that was a little surprising. Also took at hit on a blue spin doctor with a blue fly. All were caught on a NW troll. We also had a nice acrobatic display from a steelhead as he threw the hook and continued to play around on the surface. From the radio traffic sounded like in general it died off after about 7:30, 8:00. If you found them after that let me know how? I'll try to get pictures posted later. Andy

I am planning on fishing out of St. Joe this weekend. With the wave forecast I might not be able to get on saturday, if I do it will be in the evening when the wind dies down. My question is with the strong winds blowing, mostly out of the southwest, for a couple days how is that going to change the fishing? Where would be a good place to start to look for the fish? thank you Andy

I am still fairly new to fishing the big pond for salmon. I have yet to start to run lead cores. I am hoping to change this by next weekend. I have extra rods and reels so that isn't a problem. I am planning on setting up two setups to run off inline boards. I was leaning towards two 5 core setups, but am open to all opinions. I am new to this so I need to know how much backing and what backing I need to put on the reels, and how much leader to use as well. Also what knots to use to tie the backing to the core and the core to the leader. Now for a couple rigging questions. I am under the impression that each section of core should put me 4-5' down in the water column. So if I was to put out 5 sections I should be down 20-25'. but.......I have heard some people to say to run your core out then run out another 100' of line. Will that extra 100' of line help me get any deeper? Also I am looking for any and all other information you can give me to get this setups going(and hopefully catching fish). Thank you in advance for any and all information you shoot my way(and remember any information you give me might get used againist you in a future tournament or challenge:grin:). Andy

Here is a couple different ones that I found. I too wondered about them as well.
-
I have had a dead battery on the water. If you have a kick you can start your kicker and run that for a short time and that will usually charge your battery enough to start your main motor. The other thing I do now is I had room for another battery so I put it in and hooked it to my on board charger and keep it maintained but It isn't used most the time. It can be hooked up in about 5 sec though. I like to be on the safe side.

I actually looked at them earlier today on the internet. I will have to check into them a little more.

I too use the noodle idea. I picked that idea up from sea-mac when I went out with him one day last year. I cut a slut in them then you don't need any tooth picks. I also label the different size leaders by labeling the noodle tith a marker. Works great. Now if I can only find a really good way to store my spoons with out getting them scraped up.

I know this is primarialy a salmon site, and it has helped me catch salmon. Now I am after those tasty little perch. Can anyone point me in the right direction of where I might catch some in the lower half of the lake? Or point me in the right direction of where to look for those reports. I am hoping to go out saturday with a couple friends perch fishing. Then if we do well we can switch to a little trolling. I was looking at the st. joe area or south. thank you Andy
