for more information on the NMEA 2000 Network you can visit http://www.nmea.org/ great source for accurate up to date information on just about any thing to do with marine electronics Calumet Marines Eau Claire location has not been working out as a service center for now at least we have modified it to be a boat storage and drop off center There is a pick up and drop off charge for service that is being done in our Chicago location It was just too hard to maintain or quality level with out ALL our tools and equipment on site eventually our goal is to close down the Chicago location and at that point move all our needed service equipment to the Michigan location. This will allow us to maintain the highest level of standards our customer have come to expect from calumet marine I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ryan (hondam) for helping out with these technical question his passion for fishing boating has driven his knowledge of technical aspects of our sport to levels that far exceed the above average marine mechanic and electronics installers not only do we miss Ryans Mechanical/electronics skills @ the store here THE FISH ON LAKE MICHIGAN ARE CATCHING A HUGE BREAK !!!

very nice !!! looks like a great bot to put some tlc into keep pictures coming -
when converting to point less ignition on older motors don't forget to by pass the ign. ballast resistor in the engine wire harness
-
boots every ten years (this would include transom bracket water hose) and water pump impeller every other year or so pull the drive every other year and grease the drive coupler and u joints a lot of these expenses can be greatly reduced if not avoided completely fun cost money and its still a lot cheaper than a seat at a hockey game these days GO HAWKS
-
two things come to mind electronic ign will require different plugs make sure the spark advance curve is in spec don't run the motor until you fix this problem spark knock can easily cause fatal damage to your motor

if you can clean a salmon you can cut up herring whole is cheaper but a lot more work you can chop it up and use it with out brining if you use it the same day brining just preserves and stiffens it up a bit for use strips are just a convenience they are already brined much easier to ship don't have to stay frozen if packed in salt just start rite behind the gill plate filet one side off the herring down the backbone chop the head off and you have two strips "A" side still has the tail on it "B" side is just a strip the large blue label herring you can get two strips from each side of the herring check out this video from the calumet marine web site under forums and bait shop http://calumetmarine.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=fishing&action=display&thread=318

the two tough jobs in mounting a kicker is getting as close to center line of the boat as possible and clearing the water while up on plane with the main motor you don't need a lot of power to troll 3 mph and the fuel you save is minimal compared to the saving of wear and tear on the main engines the hp is needed to steer the boat most cases to move the stern of the boat sideways needs power to steer more than make trolling speeds you can help a lot by off setting rudders out drive or motors twards the kicker to help the steering but best to mount kickers as close to the keel of boat as possible there is no such thing as too big a alternator on a kicker any thing less than ten amp these days is just not enough but be cautious looking at alternator spec. true alternator out put is not the charging capacity and also look at the rpm the specs are rated @ some rate their out put at or near full throttle that's a unrealistic number for a guy that trolls with his motor true charging out put is at trolling speed and will differ from boat to boat and alt out put minus what power is used to keep the motor running = true charging capacity how a kicker motor is mounted on a transom has every thing to do with how happy and usable a kicker is on any boat

walleye boards steel pin fix
prop nut replied to prop nut's topic in Equipment Inventions/Modifications
looks like the 44 board uses the same pin a little longer the next batch I make will fit both it will just stick out the top of the standard walleye boat a little further -
There is no real good reason to try Imitations for herring or squid or gulp or familiar bite they all say they work as good as well if herring and ballyhoo are the bench mark just slice it dice it make it fit your head and make sure it had this deadly role and thank you john king for producing this educational video http://calumetmarine.3dcartstores.com/Bait_c_9.html

walleye boards steel pin fix
prop nut replied to prop nut's topic in Equipment Inventions/Modifications
I am going to have to buy a couple tx 44s and make some of those pins a well if its only a little longer I made a jig to make the pins myself, with the jig its fast, if its just a little longer it will be a minor change the first couple dozen pins I made years ago I spent some time getting rite Myself I much prefer the reg. size boards its just a lot easier to see if you have a fish on the std size has any one with the 44s had the same problem ? -
walleye boards steel pin fix
prop nut replied to prop nut's topic in Equipment Inventions/Modifications
I am not sure I will have to check we been making these about ten years now any one know if the old std."THE WALLEYE BOARD" use the same plastic pin as the tx44 I know this is a 1/8" diameter stainless steel pin 3" overall with a 3/4" handle on the top the e clip groove is machined in 1" from the bottom end of the pin THE 90DEG HANDLE ON THE TOP MAKES IT FASTER AND EASIER TO RELEASE THE LINE YOU DONT HAVE TO GRAB IT WITH TWO FINGERS ONE FIGER UNDER THE HANDLE POPS IT LOOSE QUICK -

I will have to call greg I just talked to him and forgot to ask him about this stuff we no longer carry the 32 no one was buying it this is just another case where the fish hawk td will come in real handy to see exactly where your baits are running
-
we sell 5/1 x4 fish hawks over the rest seems to a great unit no coated cable to replace no antenna to go bad
-
that's sounds like the old round rack from mercury replacement cables are available rack parts are not but the cable alone its cheaper to just change it out to the new style flat rack and a new helm gear with new steering wheel

Engel, Yeti, Brute, Pelican, Other?
prop nut replied to arbogaster's topic in Salmon Pro's Connection
the new ukon coolers are awesome but pricy still less than a yeti and made in the usa you don't have to buy a special bad lock to lock it you will never replace a hinge on one of these bad boys -
Recomendation on Autopilot setup
prop nut replied to BenLubbs's topic in Boat Maintenance and Rigging
With all the talk and all the information on the internet these days a great resource for ACCURATE UP TO DATE information is available here FREE from the national marine electronics association http://www.nmea.org/ I don’t think any one purposely post information that’s is incorrect or obsolete but there is a lot out there especially when it comes to marine auto pilots and radar systems it is real tough to keep up with this stuff -
Recomendation on Autopilot setup
prop nut replied to BenLubbs's topic in Boat Maintenance and Rigging
after installing hyd helm and slave cylinder in back with twins we often just remove the power steering completely if its one eng we just leave it on because its less labor the 2.1L pump and above you dont need the power steering but this will increase you steering effort when not using the auto pilot not bad though ! this eliminates the trolling on one motor all the time and on the 888 mercruiser will actually be a lot easier to steer after you have a good auto pilot you will be amazed how little you will use the steering wheel to steer you boat it will steer the boat better than we can and you will seldom use the steering wheel on open water docking and in the marina -
pen yan was a quality built fishing boat my father in law had one we we literally wore out two motors in it trolling it was a late 70s vintage the tunnel drive was a bitch to steer in close quarters with a little wind you had to push some water over the rudder to anything but straight and people where always yelling at you for driving to fast in nowake zones but it was the only way you could steer it they did not make that many stern drive models the couple i have seen where all older ones and they had problems with the transoms they where not as heavy as they should of been for a stern drive application and then when they cut the hole in for the drive they did not reglass the exposed wood core this ended up letting water into the transom board and rotting make sure you check around the out drive for soft transom other than that these where great boat for fishing lake michigan i spent lots of fun hours of a couple different friends boats that had them

Recomendation on Autopilot setup
prop nut replied to BenLubbs's topic in Boat Maintenance and Rigging
for slow trolling walleye or lakers mechanical steering cables from the helm to the motor are often the limiting factor all auto pilots have limitations but any thing using a cable struggles at less than 3mph i would recomend converting to hyd steering and your options greatly increase as far as a good selection of brands and models that will perform well in most conditions my favorit set up is a Garmin ghp-10 with a 2.1L pump garmin tr1 for kickers The most inportsnt part of a auto pilot install is the calibration and tunning that needs to be done on the water after the install it needs to be done and it need to be done RITE then and only then are auto pilot owners extreemy happy with there investment -
If your a guy that wants to getstarted lake michigan fishing and have never rigged out a boat what most guys dont realize when they buy a boat is what it cost to get it all set up with the gear needed to make the most out of you time on the water the 3 fish finders on this boat for example and the arch this is often where a big part of the value comes in
