Port Sheldon ramp status
coralee replied to Wasabi's topic in Michigan Waters Fishing Reports - Salmon and Trout
I went there Wed and the ramp and river are completely open but there was ice on the big lake in front of the piers so it didn't look like you could get through yet (as of Wed). Same at Holland plus the channel was full of ice. -
I'm wondering what I might be forgetting. What is the item that often is overlooked till you're on the water and need it. Some I've forgotten in the past is: net , fillet knife, batteries for probes etc. Just got that feeling I'm forgetting something.

Went for a ride today to the State Park and the channel has a lot of ice flowing "backwards" toward Mac today with some very large chunks in it. Lower Mac has a lot of icebergs scattered on it but upper is clear. Ice was flowing so fast backwards it sure made it seem like the river was in reverse and there wasn't much wind. Not sure how to post a video but here is the Photobucket link(I think just click on the pic to go to the video: And here is a pic

I buy the larger spools and I carefully measure the circumference and calculate how much line comes off per revolution. I put a piece of tape on the spool to make it easy to count and I wind away. You can remeasure as the spool gets smaller but after a few times you get to know it. So far it has worked out quite accurate (close enough for me).

Port Sheldon producing?
coralee replied to Salmon_slammin's topic in Michigan Waters Fishing Reports - Salmon and Trout
I was told that a couple weeks ago already it had been pretty heavily fished and that it had slowed down so i am guessing that now you would need to pick an off day or poor weather when no ones been there for a few days to let a few fish trickle back in. Hearsay only. -
Well I called Lowrance several times and they own Simrad or both are owned by Navico so it was theirs either way, the first they took my number and never called back the second was a very helpful guy (simrad) who got me close and told me to call back if I needed to. Sure glad to have it figured out. Thanks again

Thanks to all for advice which kept narrowing it down and yes it was that the comm on the AP had to be connected to the shield on the HDS. Both manuals were fairly poor and the simrad even showed an alternate wiring where the same yellow wire was the out to in and the comm was just jumped over to the battery neg but that did not work. Thanks again to all especially TNT who nailed it. I'm ready to roll

Yes please send me a pic or info as to how you got it to work. I think that sounds like something we were trying to figure out as the yellow tx+ seems correct but the AP calls the other wire "comm" and I think its a common or ground and not the other blue. I did try to jump that comm to the battery neg terminal but that didn't work so maybe connecting to the shield??? Thank you-I look forward to the info. i'm still trying to get voltage from the yellow also and not succeeding, so ???
-
Update I was told to test the voltage on the sending wire and it should read up to 5 volts. It does not seem to be sending through the NMEA0183 wire so I am assuming at this time its a setting issue in the HDS. Any ideas? or anyone using the same NMEA to send and can tell me their settings? Thanks
-
As far as I can tell yes. The tx is send on the hds and the rx is receive. I have the Yellow TX+ connected to the data in and the blue TX- connected to the comm. It appears to be just like it shows in a diagram in the AP14 manual. I'm getting satellite info to the HDS and telling it to go to a trail and it produces the straight line to the start of the trail but the AP beeps twice when NAV is pushed and that is supposed to indicate that no info is being received.

I think I have everything set up correct but the Simrad AP14 is not getting any input. I sure could use some help to verify stuff including the HDS settings to find out what I'm missing. Here is what I have: Anyone able to help? Thanks

Before and after pics. I needed to move the Fish Hawk transducer over to try to avoid interference and after some good advice from the good folks at Fish Hawk this is the result. Took out 28 screws just on the port side alone. Also added under water lighting while I was at it. Solid vynol mounted with 3M 5200 so no more screws into the hull.

Huge help--thank you

Thanks for the info---Which scotch lock connectors? The ones I've found say they are for solid strand wire and the wire from the HDS is strand.

I need to add some wire to connect my HDS to my Autopilot. How fussy is the wire selection? I need 22 gauge shielded wire but does it need to be "comm" wire or any shielded wire? Thanks

You ate a walleye and let the sucker go???? -
Thanks TJ sounds like good advice. I'll order the 4200 and plug the holes.
-
I'm covering all the old holes with a piece of vynol 1x6 as a transducer mounting board and trying to decide between 4200 and 5200. I'm leaning toward the 5200 for its superior strength but hear that if I ever need it removed it may ruin the gel coat. Any suggestions? Thanks PS-I plan to use it to adhere the board to the boat without any fasteners not just fill holes

If it looks like they are in good condition to survive I leave it up to the person who reeled it in but yes we release some of the fish we catch. Not to many lakers go back if they came up from deep cold water to warm on top and you can see if they are bloated. Those don't usually survive. If any fish are going back its as quick and careful as possible. Most smaller fish don't seem to have any problems going back.
