  1. Not upset with the tribal fishermen, it just seemed to be very counterproductive from the standpoint of a sportsmen. They commercially harvest them, and I guess as long as they are stocking them with their own money then I don't care. But I do think my point was to basically regionallize the great lakes and have a board for each region that would be able to make better decisions then a blanketed decision that is only good in one area as opposed to all of the great lakes.
  2. We had been taking an annual trip to the UP every fall to chase some kings in the rivers. There is a river east of the bridge that is very small and has loads of fish returning every year. Evidenced by 3 straight years of the mass grave on the banks of this small trib. The trib goes into Lake Huron in a spot where it is somewhat like a small little bay, if you will. Didn't notice this the 1st 2 times up there, but the 3rd time we saw a string of buoys stretched from one side of this "little bay" to the other. I was generally disturbed about what I saw, being that this was a river where fish come to spawn. Called and talked with the DNR about what we saw, and didn't really think that it was ethical, regardless of what those nets were targeting, to allow netting such as we saw. You could think of it like this, stringing nets from one side to the other at the mouth of the big man. Followed up a few times with the DNR to see what conclusions they had come to, and the same answer, we'll call you we still don't have an answer. I think that the DNR does a lot right, but also do some stuff not so right. I think their intentions are good, but sometimes the outcome is detrimental and has adverse effects on other wildlife / species of fish. I have thought for a while that it would be wise to arrange a diverse group associated with each region of the great lakes to help make decisions on where we are trying to go with our fisheries, or hunting. They may have the book smarts, but I would not turn away input from a group of fishermen that have 1st hand knowledge of what is going on with the fishery in each region. It would be like a counsel of advisers who have the fisheries future in their best interest. To think that one agency can always make the right/best decision for our sport is foolish to think, especially when they have a limited supply of resources including money, which I think is one of the biggest problems. I think we could all agree that if there was a little extra we could all pitch in to benefit whichever specific fishery we enjoy the most that we would do it. But to blindly give extra money to the DNR knowing that it probably won't be put toward it's intended use.
  3. that has been the only CON for DRs, is the release. I am still looking for something that is ultra sensitive. I am looking for something that would release when something very light took the bait, but still stout enough to keep the line from slipping out. I've done it with the rubberbands, and IMO that is the best so far, as it is easier to notice a fish on. Some times it will release, especially when an eye whacks it good, but if not you need to have a good eye and know what to look for, a slight change in the rod....IS IT SPRING YET?`
  4. TW, I have 4 riggers mounted on the boat. I take the middle 2 off and utilize the DRs on each corner. I don't get too crazy with them, but I do send them right down to the bottom. 1-5' off the bottom. It is definitely an easy way to deploy 2 more rods and be right on the bottom. Usually spoons, long leads off the balls 50-100'. Every time I use my riggers I will catch walleye with them. DRs don't seem to produce near as many fish for me as the Jet Divers & Leadcore that I use, but they do produce fish. I can't really list any cons as for using 2 DRs to walleye fish with. But, with that being said, for me it would not make sense to put my other 2 DRs on the boat and use them for walleye, because the DRs just haven't proven to bear near as productive as leadcore and jet divers. I have heard from enough people, I can't believe you catch walleye on DRs, but when I ask why they can't give me a good answer. There is a lot of different ways to catch walleye and I'm going to try every way I can to make fishing that much better.....
  5. This is one of the dumbest things mentioned: "If only one or two get through, it's not the end," Rogner said. "They'll be little fish in a big pond." It may not be a big deal to start, there has been mention that these things can spawn up to 3 times a year, and spawn millions of eggs. It may not be the end, but what they fail to accept it that it could be the begginning of terrible things to come.
  6. Very clean inside and out! It's a sweet rig, and fishes great too. That outboard tom has on it cuts down to 2 cyclinders while trolling...Tom, you want to trade for mine?? Even swap????
  7. Wish I lived closer, that is a sweet deal for someone....
  8. Bravo Captain! Bravo...
  9. Ran some miles on this bird, had no idea of a Winn, MI. It is about 69 miles west of Linwood. Pretty cool to get tagged information back....
  10. Love it! Something to watch all winter...thanks
  11. Kast master spoons work well too. Was working in Onekema a few years back, and the dr I was working for caught some and cooked them up for dinner. He baked them in the oven, with cheetos sprinkled lightly on top. It was a quiet meal as I was busy stuffing my face, it was excellent...
  12. Another year behind you...Hope this one is even better...have a great day!
  13. I will be looking for a rubber landing net for the walleyes, you know the one that the hooks don't get stuck in. Also looking for 3 more 7' okuma rods and the magda LC reels for walleye, other then that not much needed. Just picked up a new raymarine finder that will be going on in the spring.
  14. That's what is really worrysome, is that there is talk that they are close, well I hope they're not, but it is possible that they are already in the lake hopefully not in any numbers. Regardless, they need to be wiped out!!!!!
  15. Thanks, I've got to get it when I can. When Amber was born I had other things to do other than fish, now she is growing and Beth does not need me as much, so it's like making up for lost time. I just love being on the water, it's like therapy for me, and then to make that even better the fish are there and are a blast to get...can't wait for next spring...
  16. I was drinking my coffee this morning looking out the back window and I knew you all were out doing it again today:D. Nice job on the fish Jay. Boat traffic was murder again this weekend eh? Really needed to keep your eyes on all the other boats around:lol: Thanks for the detailed reports, it is a recipe for success!
  17. Phatty is pretty fired up about this late season action, as am I. Just wish time wasn't a factor....we'll sneak out here again sometime soon hopefully.
  18. This year I have read more reports from more people about fish in the river and in the bay. Most seem to be reporting bigger fish in general, which I love to see.
  19. 12# now that is a dandy! How bout a little bit of detail, ie., technique and fow that you were targeting???
  20. Click on the detroit free press and watch vidoe I & video II about these carp. The number of fish in the rivers is insane! KILL EM ALL!!! They are nothing but bad news for the great lakes. How is it possible that more has not been done about this sooner?
  21. Things started of great, pink panties 67 on the DR to 3 kings right off the bat. Deployed 1,2,3,4,5 & 10 colors with an array of spoons. Stinger scorpion fire dot took a couple off the 1 color. PK00004 took 3 off the 3 color. We had hits on just about every LC that was out, but it was a lot of there and gone in a hurry kind of rips. Ended the day 9/19, all we needed was 1 lake trout for our great lakes grand slam. Nice little brown, couple kings, a dandy coho 7-8# and of course some steel. Was another awesome day on the water, just wish we could have a better batting average. Fished mainly 130-170FOW, not nearly as good of action for us as the last few times out. None the less it was an awesome day to be on the water. Is it really almost December?
  22. For sure a good thing to see these bigger eyes. Erie seems to produce bigger eyes than the bay in general, hopefully this is a sign of bigger fish for next year. I hope it's not just late season walleye on the feed packing on the pounds big time for winter and then back to the cookie cutters of summer, not that those are bad, but it would be nice to see some generally larger walleye compared to what has been out there this past summer. Only time will tell....
  23. If that's your brother with that PIG he should mount that thing....nice fish!
  24. You spoil your ole' lady:lol:. Those reels were nice to fish with, I tell you one thing you have that my BIL needs to change on his in line planers, is the front clip/lock thing that you put on. Where can I pick those up? It made for quick and easy work of getting the planer board off the line....
