Use the thumb nail rule when determining if hooks are sharp. A sharp hook with scratch your thumb nail. With no pressure on the hook, drag the point across your thumb nail. If it scratches it, then its sharp! If it does not leave a mark, sharpen it or change the hook. If the hook falls out of the fishes mouth in the net it could be a couple of things. The hook did not penetrate(dull hook), or the hole where the hook went through got enlarged. The enlarged hole could be a result of the drag being to tight. The next time one comes off in the net, check the fish and see why it fell out. Some say fish come unbuttoned during the fight because of the leverage created by the extra hooks on a treble hook. This is why some will switch to a single hook.

Ever wonder where all of the stray balloons floating around on the lake come from? I witnessed two car dealerships in Otsego releasing them from vehicles after their sale was over I am sure other dealerships are doing the same thing. Would this be considered littering?

Two swans in Michigan appear to have been infected with an avian flu of the A(H5N1) type, government agricultural officials announced yesterday, but the virus is not the same lethal strain that has killed millions of birds and 139 people in Asia and the Middle East. Although final tests will take two more weeks, officials said, the virus appears to be a strain that was found in ducks in Canada one year ago and in the United States in wild ducks in 1986 and 1975. While it is an H5N1 flu, it is a “low pathogenicity†strain, meaning it does not kill birds and has never been known to infect humans. Whole story here.

Never leave an empty beer bottle in your chair and go to the bath room. Rich got up 3 different times and went to the bath room while we was waiting for the pavilion so we could eat. Each time he went to the bath room, some one(not me) refilled his empty beer bottle. You should have seen the look on Riches face when he returned and realized his beer bottle was not empty. He drank an extra 3 beers that day. Thanks to Mike for helping me out with this and to everyone who showed up! It was a GREAT time! Have you ever seen someone who has drank a few too many run from a porta jon to his truck to get his cell phone when it was ringing? Lucky for us his shorts were pulled up. Rich....what do you mean I have the wrong number? :D

Here are a couple of photos and a short video of Captain Chip of Hitman Charters cleaning fish. Captain Chip cleaned the one in the video in 39 seconds. At the time, Captain Chip did not know I was taking a video of him cleaning the fish. There was ZERO wasted meat! Captain Chip told me he once won a fish cleaning contest, where he filleted three 10lb kings in 33 seconds How fast can you clean a fish?

I made it out 8/14 with Hitman Charters. Hitman Charters runs out of Grand Haven, Michigan. I booked the trip back in April and was going out with Mike(from the site), and a group of guys from work. The marine forecast was 3-5' waves building to 4-6' waves. Not a problem. The Hitman is a 31' Tiara open and is made for fishing in these conditions. We left the dock at 5:30 and headed out the channel. We passed a small boat in the channel that had turned around and was heading back in. We were the first charter boat out of Grand Haven on the lake that morning. We hit the pier heads and the waves were more like 4-8'. At 8 knots we headed West for deeper water. After an up and down ride out to 195' Captain Chip shut the boat down and Captain Jon(Hitman on this site) went to work on setting the rods at the back of the boat. We picked up a couple of small fish, and turned the boat back toward shallower water in search of bigger kings. Once we hit 160 FOW, the rods started firing. We continued to work 160-120 FOW for the rest of the day and ended up 12 for some wheres around 20. I lost track. Our hot baits were an Oceana fly by Rapture Trolling Flies, and Michigan Stinger spoons. There was not one hot color as we caught several fish on many different colors. Any spoon that had blue took a rip. Captan Jon does an outstanding job working the back of the boat. He had his work cut out for him in the 4-8' ers. I was very impressed. If you are looking to book a charter, I would highly recommend Hitman Charters. Captain Chip and Captain Jon will show you a GREAT time and answer any questions you may have. Thanks for a GREAT time Captain Chip and Captain Jon!

Botulism is back on Lake Ontario's shores, where invasive species are helping it thrive. Every summer, when water temperatures rise, thousands of fish and fish-eating birds such as gulls and terns succumb to the toxin produced by botulism bacteria across the Great Lakes. And in recent weeks, state Department of Environmental Conservation scientists have confirmed an outbreak at the east end of Lake Ontario that has killed hundreds of birds. They also have found the toxin in Sodus Bay, 40 miles east of Rochester. http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060809/NEWS01/608090350/1002/NEWS
