Rare plate confirms site as North America's first French settlement One of the greatest archeological mysteries in Canadian history -- the precise whereabouts of French explorer Jacques Cartier's 1541 settlement near present-day Quebec City -- has been solved after experts matched the shard of a broken plate found at suburban Cap Rouge with an identical, 465-year-old porcelain treasure held by the famed Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg, Russia. http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/story.html?id=1ade1dcb-10cd-4b75-a2c0-c1f25d082c08

  14. HOLLAND -- Michigan shipwreck experts say a "treasure trove of history" in the form of a wood-hulled cargo ship has been discovered off South Haven nearly 80 years after it went to the bottom of Lake Michigan. Well-preserved remains of the SS Hennepin, a Milwaukee-built, 208-foot-long vessel that sank during an Aug. 18, 1927, storm, has been found by Michigan Shipwreck Research Associates, a Holland group that searches for and documents shipwrecks in state waters. The group also reported Friday a barge found near Port Sheldon Township and a schooner near Saugatuck. http://www.mlive.com/search/index.ssf?/base/news-31/1155968717305830.xml?grpress?NEG&coll=6

  22. Oak Park boy, 11, killed in tunnel during vacation up north; ranger says digging is never stable. The death of 11-year-old Lloyd Andrew Kopack this week at the Grand Sable Dunes at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore underscores the hidden danger sand can pose, officials said Thursday. Lloyd died Tuesday evening after a tunnel he was digging in the Upper Peninsula dunes on the shores of Lake Superior collapsed, burying the boy in 1 to 2 feet of sand for more than 20 minutes before rescuers could get to him. He was pronounced dead later that evening at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060818/METRO02/608180308
  23. Ontario's natural resources minister wants Ottawa to toughen up regulations to protect the Great Lakes. In an announcement Thursday, David Ramsay called on the federal government for tighter controls for freighters entering the Great Lakes to help prevent invasive species from entering the water system. "We are disappointed that the new regulations put in place by the federal government exempt the majority of ships from important measures to reduce the risk of bringing invasive species into Ontario waters." http://www.cbc.ca/canada/ottawa/story/2006/08/17/great-lakes.html
