  1. If you're fascinated with knot types, try logging onto Mark Sosin's website. He wrote the book on fishing knots. Don't know if he covers wire, but should, and you'll be amazed at the amount of knots he addresses. Quite informative for any fisherman.
  2. These guys all have great ideas. I've never done a transom, so can't speak from experience. But, I would guess that the new plastic wood that never rots might also enhance the end result so it never rots again. Costs more but worth it. Can't say how thick they make it, but laminating with dowels like Jimmy said always works well.
  3. Great idea Mike. Can't beat the smiles on kids when they catch that first big one either.
  4. Thanks Frank, that was a biggy, 3#, 15", wow. Maybe Michigan should add this to the list of fish now for records.
  5. Hey Mike, you can always check out the online publication of boat trader, also craig's list Michigan. Welcome to the GLF forum, great people here.
  6. Nice EdB, but I too only saw the free duffle bag and magazine. Any other link? Thanks.
  7. Peanuts work well, also cowbells. In Ludington we target them in front of the (PSP), Pumped Storage Project, aka "the projects", 60'-90' fow on bottom. Slow boat all the way, use sea bag too if necessary, best speeds historically, 1.2-1.6 mph on top. Watch thermatroll and keep top speed consistent with bottom speed as close as possible. Speed is critical, along with bait fish marked. I typically use longer leads of 8'-12' behind the ball.
  8. Sounds like you learned a lot Ryan, thanks for the post and attending the meeting.
  9. Big heavy VMC's are my ticket for years. Check hooks often after catching and resharpen as needed, even new hooks right out of the package.
  10. Here's a quick few items that I see a lot of anglers neglecting sometimes for years without improvements and they aren't that expensive: 1) new net, plenty of choices, and many improvements made in recent years. 2) new filet knife and sharpener, seen many very good new ones and old Forschner makes alike with improvements. 3) rebuilding old reels you favor, many old reels need new draqs, gears, handles. Get well fast Bob, sorry to hear you are laid up, but at least it's not prime time fishing season.
  11. I'll be out of town during this date, but that should be a real good meeting and info. for us anglers all. Very nice gesture Ryan to offer transportation to this event, hope you get some more people to go.
  12. Welcome to GLF Darl, best choice fishing forum. Ludington = best fishing port too.
  13. This IS a great idea that I used to do long ago and kinda forgot about. This past season I added quite a bit of new tackle, upwards of $2500, so I guess I'll be making one this spring too. Thanks Aaron.
  14. That was funny, don't see that everyday either, but it does happen. Thanks.
  15. We used keel sinkers for years to get the planer board lines to sink some, worked fine before lead core/copper.
  16. Merry Christmas to all the GLF members today, enjoy and be safe.
  17. Giant gatorfish guys, nice video.
  18. Good action Brian, thanks.
  19. Welcome Darl. If I was repainting spoons my choice of paint would be the glow paint the Cal. DOT uses on road signs, I believe same/similar to Moonshine paint. It is the best. What kind of boat did you get/pics?
  20. Now that's archive film footage. I was a teenager when most of the salmon commotion started, and this film sure brought back a lot of fond memories of times past, and of course friends long gone now. Thanks Matt.
  21. Tuna Tom Copenhaver is the MAN to see for reel repairs for sure, and his prices and turnaround are unmatched. This is ALL he does now in retirement, and for someteen years before. Keep in mind too, he's the nicest and most friendly guy all around, try him, you won't go to anyone else afterward. And, he stands behind his work, 100%.
  22. Kyle made some interesting and informative observations. I too will make one, consider a bigger boat at least, the big waters require it for sure. Like 26' size to begin with, not any smaller than 25' for sure. It's your life out there, and friends/family that you think about in the end. It's a buyers market now, research the entire spectrum of possibilities, just saying. I saw this as a requirement in 1983 when I heard the stories and history out of Ludington, and knew the minimum size was not in the early 20's. Sounds like 1Maniac has a 26' for sale soon, maybe his will do ya.
  23. Either way it's cheaper than spoons and flies these days by far, keep up the experiments.
  24. Mmmm good eating there guys. Nice pic Ralph, thanks.
  25. Hi Mark, I wondered who your dad is and what boat he ran out of Algoma? I used to come over there in mid-July on my boat and stay at Pier 42 for about 3 days on vacation, always loved the guys there and the big fish we could catch. Thanks. Ed.
