  1. The owners are still investing small fortunes to keep this historical SS artifact of the great lakes going, congrats. and thanks.
  2. I was going by field experience Ryan, not science. But, I would be interested to see any link that would prove the science, as it sounds right. I guess the fact that fish hawks vs. other speed/temp. probes could differ in calibration and readout, would make a difference. Also, the current could differ given location, even if boats are fairly close together. Lastly, I'm referring to offshore fishing, not channel fishing. Thanks.
  3. Here's a nice catch early on, taken Monday on a charterboat in Ludington. The weigh-in was 30 pounds 1 ounce, measured 38.5" and what a girth. Bait was a thunderstick.
  4. This is indeed a rare sight these days. And as we all should know, these Sturgeon are prehistoric/endangered species, and not to be kept at all. I remember my dad telling me stories growing up that he went for 2-3 summers as a 12-15 year old out in Lk. Mich. on his grandfather's sailing/shipping schooner. They regularly fished with large ropes and hooks over the side to catch them for eating, (legal then, about 1908 or so). The Sturgeon in those days could reach 10' in length, and over 200 lbs.. They would filet them and put them in barrels of brine salt to cure, then cook them at later dates.
  5. Nice post Terry. Many may wonder if you have to be a member of the MSSFA too to fish this. Can you post that? Upon enlarging that logo I see where at least one fisherman per boat must be a member. Can they join at the sign- in locale? Thanks.
  6. Ryan makes some valid points for common sense and reference. I would also say that watching charterboats may or may not be good for speed. Take the fact that most of us run a 12#-14# ball, not a light 10# ball. Some guys have even heavier rigger balls. Thus your sog may be similar, but the rigger ball's speed will not. That will be the most important factor, presentation and speed at the ball. That's my two cents anyhow. And you can find fish hawk's and other models reconditioned/used sometimes if you scan the classifieds. Down speed/temp. units and autopilots are some of the best electronics you will ever invest in imho.
  7. Good job Brad, welcome to the GLF forum.
  8. Best report I've seen this season so far, and hard to match, esp. the grand slam this early. Great job Terry.
  9. Congrats Jim. You're going to like the transition when it comes to 3'-4' chops on many days. Although the gas bill will definitely increase, having twins is the way to go for safety and comfort.
  10. I always loved fishing and vacationing in Algoma, Wis.. Best fishermen and people on earth.
  11. Aint that the truth Jason. Craig, you didn't forget to ask Matt did you? Maybe he's still busy with college, but I'd bet he'd rather be with you. Good luck. Btw, that's a pretty generous offer coming from a charter captain too.
  12. What a lucky guy Kevin is, all I can say is live it to the fullest, and be safe.
  13. Catching perch to eat is always a good thing, esp. so early in the season.
  14. Welcome to the forum woodrow, good luck with that project.
  15. Patience is a virtue. We can't change nor fool mother nature. Be safe when it's the right time.
  16. The old 290 was the best one of her day, my favorite. Looks like she is getting all the goodies for a long future. Congrats.
  17. Thanks for joining and welcome. If the budget will allow for it, consider a used boat that is bigger and made for Lk. Michigan salmon fishing. Several are in the classifieds here at GLF that have been well cared for, and are reasonably priced too. Many years ago I decided to go no smaller than 26' for a starter, but, you could consider 22' and up.
  18. Those clouds don't look good at all, thanks Hank, for the reminder to all fishermen. That's a nice display of artful photography too, great work.
  19. Sounds like your charter name reflects your efforts, Hot Bite, let's see some pics. soon after you recover, lol.
  20. Boltman, I am a true Chevy guy, and I do like the Chevelles, Novas, & Camaros, I had 3 Camaros earlier. But that Shelby, wow, what Ford has done to compete, is surely amazing. That's a ride to heaven imho. And you say it's going up for sale? Awww, you're gonna miss her, unless of course the tickets are piling up too fast, lol.
  21. That's funny John. Did I hear right that the UP had 12"-18" of new snow last weekend? I surely hope not, lol.
