  1. what model/year boat?
  2. I just busted out laughing reading the "Oh its hooked RIGHT in the mouth!". I'm surprised the DNR hasn't shut it down yet. I don't know if its the budget concerns of because they're making $ off of writing tickets & or they're worried about the lack of license sales. If i was in charge of things at the DNR. I'd put 2 guys in muskegon during the month of November & work them all night. Michigan would have so much $$$ from tickets they could get rid of the state sales tax. I would also install some signs at the allegan dam. Warning everyone to the rules. Tell them how much a fine is. Then I would have an officer in plain clothes show up & balance any shortfalls in the state budget.
  3. You get any coho?
  4. The time to catch them is now. Starts in November and goes until it warms up. You want to make up a bunch of leaders(4-6 pound test). Wrap them around something. Make them difference lengths. 18 inches to 24 inches. One end have a single egg hook. the other end have a size 10 swivel(small). You also want to add a 2nd hook in the middle/more towards the end. Its cold outside retying anything takes 500x longer. You will tangle them the leaders. When they tangle its easier to cut them off & put a new one on then deal with it. Fish also swallow the line. Its easy to just clip on a new leader & keep on trucking. I like to have at least 3 per rod. As for the main line. 6 pound test. Through the end of a size 10 swivel so the swivel slides freely. That's where you put a pyramid sinker. Buy a few of different sizes 1-3oz's. You want to use the smallest possible but when its wavy you'll need bigger ones. Now after the swivel that slides freely. Put a bead on the line so the swivel doesn't hit the knot. Now tie on a size 10 or so figure 8 swivel on. That's where you connect your leader. As for the rod. You'll want a longer steelhead 10-12 foot noodle rod. I have used shorter rods that I use for perch and they get the job done. You'll also want to make sure you got a net that can reach the water from the pier. So a 10-12 foot handle. You can buy single salmon eggs from any bait shop. Get a small separate container(like a chew container) that you can put a few eggs in & garlic scent/mix whatever its called. put 2-3 on a hook. You can google & read about the whitefish runs in muskegon in november. That's just snaging. Anyone tell you otherwise is stretching the truth. Somehow they think if you snag out of 10 in the mouth instead of by its tail its somehow legit. You can fish from the piers from mid november all winter longer. As long as there isn't ice blocking your line from entering the water & catch whitefish. Early morning bite is best. Show up an hr or so before sunrise. Busy ports you will need to show up earlier than that to get a spot on the pier. Don't be afraid to fish a port that isn't well known. They come to the piers in schools. If you put 3 rods out(which you should) don't get all excited when you get a triple header & screw up and only get one fish. Its going to happen. Some piers don't have holes drilled into them. Make sure you know what you need. Some ports you'll need a 5 gallon bucket w/ PVC/rod holders bolted to it. Fill it full of water to weight it down. You'll want to fish towards the ends of the piers. Not near the beach. If you're there first. Look for blood w/ your uv flashlight. The limit is 12 fish. Any other questions?
  5. As long as it looks good you should be fine. Most down rigger cable is 150 pound test.

  7. I have no clue what is going on. Do these help? Or are you asking for something else?
  8. I really appreciate the local knowledge on this matter. What does this ash do? I imagine it would raise mercury levels in the fish. How does it hurt your dock? I imagine it just gets everything super super dirty. Probably need the muskegon guy to claim he will buy a boat & put it in ludington. It doesn't make financial sense to buy a new boat when you can bribe i'm sorry "donate" a couple hundred thousand to the politicians & get out of spending millions on a new boat.
  9. I was reading that it would take them 10-17 years on top of the $3+ billion. So laughable.
  10. Thanks a million. I'd love to hear more.
  11. I don't understand why filling in part of a canal will cost $3 billion dollars?
  12. Launch is open. They pulled the docks though. I couldn't tell you anything about coho's at the moment.
  13. nice ship, welcome to the forum.
  14. I use 8 pound balls on big jon manuals. My body says that's enough for me. If i need to go faster & get it out deeper i'll just let out more line. Cable length i'd put on 300-400. Due to removing kinks & break offs and not having to worry about it for a long time. Cable size. I don't have a clue. I think its 150 pound test. Welcome to GLF.
  15. We're supposed to blame alcohol for all our problems and you and your facts aren't helping!
  16. We definitely take our source of freshwater for granted. We have 20% of the world's fresh water. We should do everything in our power to protect it. One third of the pollution in that lake is from coal plants. Regulation was passed to cut the pollution drastically. That's a huge win. Many of our local political friends are rallying against this. This is a huge mistake. Everyone saw the news this past year of the extreme droughts in Texas. So what do we do? We propose to build a pipeline to area to use our oil refineries to turn tar sands into oil. Its a very polluting process. Worse than coal plants. This type of activity leads to pollution in our lakes. When I say pollution I'm talking about toxins & PCB's & high mercury levels. That's not really the part I really worry about. The main problem is it takes an insane amount of water to get one barrel of oil. Lots of areas in our country have water shortages or are the verge of having very drastic water shortages. Why should we encourage our refineries to waste water? The oil will not be used in american cars. It will be refined & shipped to china. If we encourage others to waste water in this manner. Guess what? We're soon going to be talking about another pipeline being built. Its going to be the pipeline that empties water from the great lakes. Everyone knows the proposals in the past for people to take water out of the great lakes that has been shot down time & time again. You just wait until people are truly out of water and we'll have a hard time keeping Indiana/Chicago from draining our great lakes. I am so mad at Fred Upton for leading the republicans in the charge to build this pipeline. I live in his district. I see NO WAY IN HELL it will help anyone from our district. I only see the bad consequences. Another thing that stinks to high heavens about the pipeline. Non-pollution wise. Just general observation. In 2008 we were paying $4 a gallon and one of the main reasons we were told was because we haven't built a refinery since the 1970s. Last time I checked no new refineries have been built due to the tough EPA rules. It seems like all these tar sands do actually have the real chance of running up our refining capacity & raising our gas prices. Why should our refineries be used up to help china? I don't trust these oil companies one bit. As for the sewage running into our lakes. Yes, its a problem. Especially when you lose tourism dollars. Many people came to our town last year and 2 separate ocassions the beaches were closed. People see that visiting for the first time & never come back. Its also an expensive problem to fix. Its going to require 2 separate systems being build under our roads. 1 to collect waste. 1 to collect rainwater. I think the best way to solve this is that every time you tear up a road. You separate the systems. Over time the problem will be fixed. If there are few areas which gets insane amounts of rain. Maybe those places are attacked more aggressively.
  17. Can you upload pics?
  18. Time to quit going local and start ordering off the internet.
  19. There are a ton of places around here. What Frank said tho, The die makes it expensive. Just type into google "short run metal stamping michigan" http://www.koproducts.com/stamping http://www.codeestamping.com/
  20. oh man... I finally mustered up the courage to watch. I am going to do a better job from now on to make sure everything is put away in the maxi-mate so these accidents will happen a lot less often.
  21. That's a sharp looking boat. You going to rip out the back seat?
  22. Anyone ever hear an update on CL145a? It was some chemical that was supposed to come along and kill these terrible things.
  23. Dow is the #1 chemical company. EPA rules allow them to just give "estimates". No real reason for the others to hide when they can just lie and its perfectly legal. I would like to know. If there is something they could do for a couple billion dollars to drastically cut that number like in the same manner of the new coal plant regulations. I am a huge fan and I think everyone on this board should be too. This stuff ends up in the rivers & lakes. Those "eat X fish once a month" guidelines that everyone here ignores. These guidelines wouldn't exist. This is the kind of future I want for our kids & grand kids. I don't hug too many tree's but when it comes to this one issue. Everyone who enjoys the outdoors should be on the same page.
  24. Here is what I take out on Lake Michigan. This isn't the boat I take but this is the length/same year/model an 18 footer. http://www.boattrader.com/listing/1986-Smoker-Craft-188-Cr-101243370 I have been in 6-8 footers. I have no problem with it. It rides them up and down very well. Most people get sick to be honest. I have taken a wave over the front twice this past year on the same day. The first one was the sign that it was time to go back in. Its definitely doable in 6 footers. Anything more than that and it becomes pretty retarded. As for a bass boat. I'm not sure i'd go for that. It would severely limit your fishing days where I live.
