  1. Your radio must be one that has DSC and you need to also have a GPS with a nema output . Check your radio instructions for more info. Then as Jim said you will need a MMSI number which you can get through Boat US. I have made this a priority on my boat. Push one button and the Coast Guard will know your position if its ever needed. I also bought self inflating life jackets. They are small and comfortable. Having a smaller boat and the water is very cold sometimes and what happens if you hit your head and go over? I have slipped in my boat due to fish slime , and it just makes sense to ware them .
  2. How many of you guys have your radio and your GPS Wired together to use the DSC feature on your radios. Just curious if anyone else is doing this.
  3. Sound really good , very creative.
  4. You said it all, and to boot these wind mills wouldn't even pay for them selfs before the would need to be rebuilt . Hope it ends up just like the High speed Rail they tried to push on us that we don't need here.
  5. No the antenna is grounded through the cable to the radio, Is the antenna for Marine radio? or is it a CB antenna. Check your cable for cuts and damage. The cable is shielded but if its damaged it could gather interference. Does the transducer cable run in the same place as the radio coax.
  6. Phil what kind of tracker do you have ? My Targa 17V came with a Lowrance tx 96
  7. I have it real bad too , been off work on disability since the end of October, been watching fishing shows putzing with the boat . Now that my restrictions are up to 20lbs I can do more. Get to go back to work on the 24th , that might help, less time to daydream.
  8. Back your drags up a bit looser , it makes it real easy to hear when you have a fish on.
  9. where is your antenna located ? How is it grounded , the same with the radio and your locator. I would also check your SWR on the antenna. That it self will tell you if your ground is good on you antenna. Is your boat aluminum or glass. It sounds like a ground issue or its just too close to the antenna or radio. Have you tried a different antenna?
  10. How would you do that Frank? You must have to have an interface for an external gps? and a program for it?
  11. Robert I just turned 47, and have been off work since October 28th, Had 2 vertebra fused(fusing) . Haven't been able to do anything since, nothing over 7-10 lbs. You talk about stir crazy!!!! been watching fishing shows , reading books, respooled rods. Gained 30lbs, (quit smoking too) You'll only slow down for a little while. Remember you only as old as you feel, and I feel old in the morning, and a Little younger in the afternoon. And if I'm fishing I feel like I'm 16 Again.
  12. Dave how wide is the beam on your boat, and your side riggers go out how far. I am set up to run 12 rods right now . Thats alot in the water, I would either put on a diver or lead core , with nothing out the back. keep the back open for landing fish. Even your corner riggers can get in the way unless you have a very wide beam. From what I have been told is more is not necessarily better. My setup looks just like yours, but I have to pick out from ,4 rigger rods, 4 braided dipsys, 2 wire dipsys, 6 lead core, 2 copper. I would say to run your inside rod with the dive bomb .or thumper rod. But I do agree with Mike , Only fish in the back of the boat.
  13. Dave are you familiar with the charts that are available on line? In the heading on top follow the Nautical charts , from there look up the great lakes and it will show you every chart available for the great lakes. If you do some searching you can even download the chart and print it . I don't know how computer savvy you are so let me know if I can be any more help. I did highlight the area and circle it.
  14. I just pulled up my waypoints from last year some of the tracks and points are so tight together. In a 1/4 mile area there can be as many as 10 points.
  15. Here is a shot near Muskegon, the depths are in meters. Looks like plenty of structure on the east side of the lake.
  16. Keep reading Dave , he will explain in more detail what to look for. I just finished his second book , he will explain about the structure and how large of an area it is . Its not like inland lakes where the structure is obvious. The structure out on lake Michigan can cover a mile . and you may not even notice it. and the currents play a big role in the structure also. I don't know what type of structure you have but take a look at the charts. I dont know where you are at but if you want to look at our structure look at chart #14904 , it does not have the contour lines . for that you could look at Lake Michigan Bathymetry http://map.ngdc.noaa.gov/website/mgg/greatlakesbathy/viewer.htm
  17. Nice fat 20lbers ,better 2011
  18. Did you pull the caps off the rods to see if they aready have a gimble butt, my okuma wire rods do . It shouldn't be very hard if you have to put them on either. Just make sure your rod holders have the pin in the bottom.
  19. Fish hawk and Depth raider both are coming out with a clip on unit that will read the temp at 5ft depths. it can be clipped on downriggers or dipsys even lead core to see what the temp is. It won't tell you speed just temp at depth. Or put on a Fish hawk or depth raider and it will tell you temp and speed at the ball. Here is the link for the fish hawk http://www.fishhawkelectronics.com/
  20. I have been out like that in October, rain /snow(1/2") in the boat. couple of walleyes but I not that nuts anymore. I'll push ice in the spring if I have too. Only because its warmer .
  21. Kyle did you get the info? I just signed up and I had the date wrong its the 26 not the 6th. Hope to see you there.
  22. Dan Keating is putting on a 5 hour Salmon Clinic in Manitowoc, Wisconsin on Feb. 26 from 10:00 till 3:00 Cost is $55 and includes lunch and a goody bag of tackle. I was wondering if anyone else was interested. I can't make any plans until after I get released from the Doctor on my neck. So I may miss it if it fills up. I won't find out until 24th of January.
  23. so that's how to check landing fields, so If I ever catch a bowling ball i will know who to blame. Tried to break one when I was younger , out of a moving car at 30mph. hit a car stop and went a good 25ft in the air, only managed to chip off a small chunk. never broke it .
  24. Do the Walker divers have rings, or just run naked?
