Chart Plotters and Chart Plotting Software
jimcr replied to eastcoasttransplant's topic in Marine Electronics
Keep me updated on what you do, I received an I pad for 25yrs of service , right now its just an extra computer, with some fun apps. and a place to put my pictures. -
What have you added to your boat or spread for this year? Did you remove anything from you boat? I have added a chart plotter, wire divers and copper rods. Hoping to catch the fish I missed . Took off 2 life jackets and replaced with Auto inflating ones.

Chart Plotters and Chart Plotting Software
jimcr replied to eastcoasttransplant's topic in Marine Electronics
Well Phil I just finished figuring it out, you can access the data from the pages menu button will bring up your SD card data , It reads a few different formats . I used GPX. Imported all my data ,I now have all my saved way points and trails. And it was very interesting to see why the fish were caught in certain places. I had a spot marked as structure from early in the season and now its very obvious why. I can continue to use coastal explorer for my mapping work on the computer. -
Chart Plotters and Chart Plotting Software
jimcr replied to eastcoasttransplant's topic in Marine Electronics
I imported the files from map source that I had saved. I could also import back into the program . I don't know if its possible with others. I just put in a Lowrance hds5 and I am still trying to figure out how to do it on that one. If you have the room and have a laptop its the way to go for charts. Someone told me you can pick up a usb puck cheep and just use the laptop on the boat for you chart plotter. The map files are all free. http://www.oceangrafix.com/o.g/Charts/GreatLakes/NOAA-Nautical-Charts.html I stumbled around and found the software, from inside the software I was able to find all the charts in vector and raster formats. The link at the top of the page will get you started in an online viewer. Every Plotter will most likely use a different file format. You would just have to figure out which one to use. My hds5 unit is much more complicated then my garmin 265w. and I haven't had the time to mess around with it . The only thing that's gets transferred is the way points and the routes. Not the maps. -

I use a program called coastal explorer, you download the raster or vector maps from NOAA . The maps will cover the coast line of the US and the Great lakes. You can even get up to date changes when they are uploaded. I can even print out a map if needed. This is zoomed out most of the way. and there are different maps that are quilted in so as you zoom in the detail increases too. -

Supertramp sorry about your loss Phil missed you at the seminar until Dan mentioned your name . would have stopped to say hello but my neck was not liking the drive that day so I was not good company. Let me know if you get up to Milwaukee , maybe see you on the water. -

As soon as the ice clears the river mouth , boat is ready and waiting. Too much snow to get it out of the garage and on the road. Can't wait. -
I guess his comedy was ok . he was unorganized, but it was still a good seminar. The ride home sucked. Saw one car in the ditch . Almost run off the road by a bus. Dans part of the seminar was great and he covered alot of information .

I don't know about this modle but I have others , that have gone the distance last year. Using xp452 and xp302 for lead core without any problems.I set up 2 45dx for copper and 2 45 convectors for wire. I my opion these are much better than the Diawa's. LC27 or LC47 reels. Should do you just fine.

If the remote troll is the one with the remote that you can put on your belt or around your neck ,its really slick, I have seen one work. an auto pilot would be nice though

The 27lc are pretty small , I used them last year for braided dipsys. worked ok but the capacity is not there. Most of my rods are okumas and work great, just make sure you have line counters. What kind of budget do you have , are you in need of rods too? -
any of you guys going to the seminar?

Maniac this is something I would pay to see. smoke and all. quote "But you can put your kids Zebco setup on a rigger and send it down. And it will catch fish, will likely burn up on contact but it will hook a fish down deep."
-
I started out last year with Cannon 2 lake troll , and then found a real good deal on 2 big jon manuals with 4 ft boom and added them. Then I started running divers and planer boards . If you don't get any riggers you will be fine just invest in copper and wire divers . Some days the only reason I put down a rigger is to put out my temp probe.

Very nicely done , I could understand a few words here and there. Nice that you presented the pictures with the riggers and dipsys.
