What, where and how were your biggest fish caught?
jimcr replied to Fowlpursuit's topic in General Discussion
This was a few years ago , at the time it was the biggest fish I have caught, I am still working on my tyee but it was close last year. 08/20/11 With all the warm water here in Milwaukee getting out deep to find the fish can be a little tricky , My son nick and I went out tonight and were bumped around for the first 2 hours, We were out on Wednesday and the water was very warm top to bottom. Still managed to pick up one king that night just a shosh under 20#. Back to today the waters have changed again this time being colder than Wednesday. Found 48 degree water down 60 ft out in 140. On our way out to the deeper water we had a rip that took out 200 ft of line then ran full speed at the boat til it came off. Reset the rigger and 15 minutes later Nicks got a nice 10lb king. Then it was quite for a while until the same rod goes off again ripping just like the first one but this time its not running at the boat its running for the bottom. 35 minutes later and lots of grunting Nick nets the biggest fish this year. 22# king. ( the last 2 fish I brought in took over an hour together to bring in ) . "] -

Electrical?-Narrowing it down to the AP
jimcr replied to coralee's topic in Boat Maintenance and Rigging
If your familiar with how to check voltage drops and have a probe,(basically your voltage should be the same on both sides of the load) it would make it easy but if not it may be like chasing your tail for a while. If you can run a new line for the lights at least a temp one you may find hat the old wire are corroded maybe even under the insulation , it only takes a pin hole to cause problems as moisture and electrical can make a mess. If the runs of wire are not home runs back to the battery check there for problems. It sounds like the grounds run together or are back feeding to the lights. As for the grounds going to the engine block , its not the preferred method but it will work , make sure you have a good ground between the engine block and the battery. Corrosion will increase resistence ,heat and poor flow of electric. Let me know if I can help more , just sorry I am in Milwaukee as this would be a fun one to fix. Jim -
Electrical?-Narrowing it down to the AP

Sounds like you have a voltage drop problem. how are the lights and Auto pilot wired in? Are they wired to the fuse panel directly or a connection away and together. Is the ground for the Auto pilot connected together with the AP ? -
The 8' talora rods are 119.00 and the Okumas BLT-WR-862s are 94.99 but I don't think that the stainless guides are the way to go. The taloras are 6" shorter , and if you get the 8'6" in talora the price jumps by 100.00 what is up with that? The last straw was this last weekend when my wife says what this , and she had part of the roller from a bluer diamond rod in her hand, Luckly I had a spare tip left over from when I broke one of them and That was due to the fact that the wire will get caught in the rollers from time to time. This this why I am trying to get the input and where I would normally buy from is gone. So if you have used the full roller rods (BLT-WR-862MH) please leave you input . I prefer Okuma to Talora ( I think its all over priced ) Just because of the popularity of it . But if I get bad feed back on the okumas I will go the Talora route. I just don't' want to keep buying rods that don't work as described. I wish I could touch feel test out with my own hands before buying but no big box stores here sell them. I have good quality reels on my blue diamonds it just the rod that suck. The okuma rods I mentioned look good and I am close to pulling the trigger on them. Just want to make a good informed decision.

Has anyone used the okuma BLT-WR-862MH WIRE RODs and are they better than the Blue diamond roller rods , I have the Blue diamond roller rods and are not happy with them. I see that the Big water rods have a swivel tip making it better right off the bat but I would need some input before buying them. Jim

what kind of boards are you running? how heavy is your copper 45lb? If your running 45 or 60 lb copper I would use tx 44s . I run my 300 32 lb super copper with walleye boards fine but if I pull out the 450 copper I run a tx 44 for that. The 32 lb will run almost as deep as the 45 . 10ft difference on the 300 . Hope that helps.

Ok has anyone come up with a good home brew for cleaning up hard water stains off the motors and boat. My boat is painted black and silver so it shows , I know you can buy a spray that works well but at 15.00 a bottle gets somewhat pricey. I have used vinegar with some success but looking for something better.

CHeck for continuity on the shield and the center wire. If either are bad your problem lies there. you would have to unplug the cable from the head unit ( this is where mine went bad the plug) and using a piece of wire and a tester check to make sure the wires are good. You could jump the plug after disconnecting and just check one end using a ohm meter. If I remember when I was doing the trouble shooting I used a long video cable and an adapter to check mine. Placed the probe in a bucket and it worked , so then i new it was the cable. The longer the run from the head unit to the rigger the bigger PITA it is . I had plenty of problems with that cable , I put a new end at the head unit and took out the plug on the other end . now it works flawlessly . But have to undo the clincher and wire ties to remove the rigger . My unit was only 3 years old.

Guys check your antenna cable , I had a similar problem last year , turned out my antenna cable at the head unit went bad , put a new end on it and works great now . Took me a long time to figure it out as I had just redone my rigger and thought that was it , 3 hours later and a lot of head scratching . If you can test you cable first and go from there.

Milwaukee 5/24
jimcr replied to jimcr's topic in Wisconsin Waters Fishing Reports - Salmon and Trout
Once in a while i will post on lake link, under the handle fishhooked. I have done very little posting as our numbers sort of suck . 20 fish 6 trips . Last year we were getting limits every time out. Coho have not been as plentiful as last year and tuff to locate . Mike are you fishing out of Milwaukee? -
Out with my wife today , fishing is on fire. went 11 for 12 today . Most boats ran down south to the power plant , we stayed north close to home and did just as well , burned less fuel too. 50-70 FOW straight out . Will post fish porn at later date. Nice to be on the water again.

Really sounds like corrosion to me , I would pull your battery connections and clean them really good with a wire brush, I have in the past had a similar problem and turned out to be corrosion I could not see. I could not trim my motor but some of the other things worked fine , cleaned all the connections an deverything was fine even though when looking at them before cleaning they looked good. If your like most of us we have multiple connections at our batterys ,if you have switches make sure the connections to and from them are clean too.

I would look on the power side for a loose connection or corrosion at either a terminal or fuse joint. Are your LEDs wired along with your Lowrance?

South Gap Milwaukee
jimcr replied to starcraft's topic in Wisconsin Waters Fishing Reports - Salmon and Trout
Well you can launch at the river front or South shore , they are both open , McKinley will be locked for a week or 2 yet. If the wind is too much try the main gap or the warm water discharge by the water treatment plant. -

Nice Kal , it will continue all winter like that , even better if you can get out. Tomorrow may be the last day for a while as the cold is going to move in. Over at our spot guys were catching browns all morning, only a few perch though. -
Kal , all winter the wind will move ice flows in and out of the river, I was back on the Menominee just off the Milwaukee river and with the east wind we had Ice flows coming backwards. With the barges and the power plant it stays open almost all winter there. as for the river mouth it will open and close depending on what direction the wind is blowing and the temps. Even though we had signal digits this week it would have been open except for the east winds. If we get a warm period and west winds it may be wide open again , jsut watch the weather, just not John Malon as he does not cover the river.
