Mabey if someone had packed a rope or if he would have worn a lifejacket he would be able to tell about his experience. Recently I was fishing in Sault Ste Marie and I was surprised how many small children were fishing just a step from falling into the water ( no life jacket) and there is a good current there. One of these days I am sure tradgedy will strike there. My heart and prayers go out to his family.

I guess you have to look at the posative side of all of this **** weather. That is there will be a few more fish hitting the gravel beds this year and with all of the rain they will have a chance to spawn out before the river fishermen can get a good shot at them. Hopefully more fish in a couple of years. I was planning on hitting some river mouths this week for steelhead but not with the 3" of rain that we got yesterday

This time of year I will put the boat in early and do a slow run out of the boat launch until I hit 60 fow and watch the fish finder. If the fish are in say 30 fow 10 feet down that is how I set up to catch them. I would rely on the planer boards or directional dipsies ( the real small ones). Rapalas and J Plugs will work good up high. In most harbors you can try casting with little cleos or KO wobblers if the salmon are in the harbor.

I would love to be there and hope that you have a successful tournament. Sorry but at that time I will be hosting a tournament in St Ignace. I really hope that the weather cooperates for us. Good Luck,Chris.

What I would like to see is that everyone who uses this blog and carrys a cellphone afield put the 800 292 7800 in their phonebook and get their hunting and fishing associates to do the same. Tresspassers, poachers, and people who are anti hunting/fishing are out there in the woods and waters every day. Think of it this way if you just drove 200 miles to enjoy a weekend salmon fishing on a northern Michigan river and there were four snaggers in your favorite spot. You would probably not feel too bad calling the DNR on them would you? And you would probably be pretty happy that the number was right there in your cellphone as you are looking at their license plate.

I saw my wifes uncle last night and he was complaining that the para sail boat got him on Monday way too close. This is a man about 70 years old in a 16 foot small boat. Now I am happy that I turned him in to the Conservation Officer. I am beginning to wonder how some people get a charter license no offense to those of you who operate safely that do have charter licenses. This idiot needs to have his pulled.

In the great lakes you do get the occasional deformed fish, but wow that one has a massive head. My guess is that it spawned last spring and stayed in the stream a little too long. If that is the case it would explain the white meat. I have caught steelhead in the rivers in mid July and they almost always have white meat unless they are skamania.

Fish are starting to show up
steeliebob replied to Killin' It's topic in Pier and River Fishing Discussion
Nice king that you have there I guess that it pays to be patient. I think that I will be rigging the boat for shallow water and launch her about 3:00 am tomorrow morning. I can float the boat and cast cleos for a couple of hours then run downriggers for a couple of hours. As long as I can trailer the boat by 7:00 I can get to work by 9:00, fortunately I only live a couple of blocks from the water. A guy can get spoiled by living that close to the fishing hole. -
Put this number on your cell phone phonebook RAP 800 292 7800 it is the DNR Report All Poaching Hotline. A number of people complain on Blogs about slob hunters and fishermen who operate illegally or above the law. Sometimes these people rarely get reported if at all. Another issue is the anti hunter/fisherman who is out there just to ruin your day on the water or in the field. Do not be afraid to place a phone call and make a report the DNR will work and needs your tips. Try to provide them with as much information as possible and as quickly as possible. Remember if you as a sportsperson do nothing then nothing will be done but if you have a valid complaint or tip the DNR will follow up on it.Get all of your hunter/fishing friends to do the same. Now if everyone does their part I hope that I can hear some good things on these blogs about how the DNR hotline worked out good. Keep in mind that there is a limited number of DNR officers out there and every call is not going to be resolved 100 percent but if you do your part you can rest knowing that you did the right thing.

After a couple of days of debating I did file a complaint against the guy with the Michigan DNR. He will be let off with a warning this time and the DNR officer was thankful that I turned him in. This was the fourth time in two years that he has tried to impress his customers by shaving my boat. As a fare paying customer I would not be impressed by his reckless operation of a charter boat. I am not impressed and I am sure when the DNR officer talks to him he will know how many laws he is breaking and how close he is coming to losing his charter. i don't have a target on my boat but now I am sure that he has a target on his boat. Under the Michigan hunter fisherman harassment laws he could have been issued a ticket just by my complaint.

Resolution opposing area wind farm short of majority
steeliebob replied to News's topic in Great Lakes News
There are plenty of islands, vacant or unplanted farmland, and no thanks to certain politicians that I will not mention by name loads of belly up business properties in Michigan where the wind farm can be placed -
Just so everyone knows at one time the para sail boat was over a mile away from where my boat was and I was travelling in a straight line N?S at about 2 mph. So this guy with a charter license has a boat going approximately 30 mph travels at least a mile out and cuts 30 feet in front of my boat. Not to mention harassment he is putting the fare paying customers at risk. If I were to accidently hit my throttle my tin can would cut his glass boat in half. Thirty feet does not leave much room for error.
-
Do these guys think that they own the lake or what? Last year I had the para sail boat come way too close to my salmon boat a couple of times and last Sunday it happened again. Last Sunday he came 30 feet off of my bow throwing a large wake. Apparently the entertainment was not good enough for his crew so he turned the boat around and did it again. I don't think any of the salmon fishermen mess with the para sail boat. We just fish and go about our business, I do not want to loose rods or equipment because of a careless boater with no consideration for others on the water. Does the harassment law apply here? I think that next time he gets that close to my boat I will take his picture and turn him in to the DNR.

I always keep my knives in plain view during transport wether in the vehicle or boat so that there is no doubt that they are there. If a law enforcement officer requests to do a search I always disclose the firearms and knives that I have and where they are. By keeping this in mind you should not have any trouble. Law Enforcement Officers appreciate knowing about possible weapons and will always give you the benefit of a doubt as long as you leave them in the open and disclose their whereabouts. Also do not carry a questionable weapon where it is readily accessible to a driver or occupant of a motor vehicle. Also as long as they are transported in a locked case there is no question about being a concealed weapon.

I usually put in at 4:00 am and am the only boat on the lake by 5:00 am I am dragging balls because I am surrounded by boats and have been forced into too shallow of water. It either goes that way or I have a fish on and someone is about to run over my line. it seems like every weekend I have the boat with 4 guys in it and nobody is driving the boat. It is coming right at you and it cuts you off no matter which way you turn. Last weekend parachute boy cut in front of my boat twice 30 feet off of the bow just to mess with me throwing a big wake. I do not mess with parachute boy and next time he messes with me I think that I will call the DNR. -

If you want replica mounts contact [email protected] his name is Rick and lives in the Gaylord area. I would recommend the replicas over a skin mount. I have some skin mounts that I will eventually get redone as replicas. Some super nice lakers anyway.

You must have been way out to find 350 fow in the Michigan pond. I have been 14 miles out of South Haven and in 130 fow. I think that the deepest that I have fished on the Huron pond this year is 130 but I was less than a mile out. -
I fish solo alot and enjoy the lack of company sometimes. I prefer to launch about 4 am so I do not wait at the launch site. In the early am the fish are up high so I run two on the downriggers at 30 feet. I do not run stackers or sliders until daylight and I can set my cannon balls deeper. About 95 percent of the time I run spoons. I have a size 0 dipsey that I run about 100 feet to 125 with a glo spoon

heavymetal here to say hello.
steeliebob replied to heavymetal's topic in Welcome to Great Lakes Fisherman
Welcome aboard Gary, look me up if you cross the mighty mac to do some fishing. If i did not have to work to support my fishing habit, I would just fish. -
Just like the big buck contests when $$$$ is on the line people will point fingers and people will cheat. Everyone is after the almighty dollar in the high stakes tournament. I am not saying that this boat was cheating but if they had an observer on the boat the observer should have made a decision and it would have been final. If they withdrew from the tournament to save their reputation so be it. It is a done deal go back to fishing.

This always makes fishing a little more challanging.

Signs!!!!! Come on Rick you are N of the 45th paralell you ought to know that signs always apply to the other guy that probably won't read them either. Then there is the guy that reads the sign and it says LOOK FREE FIREWOOD. I almost peeled a guy that completely ignored a big red stop sign today, it must be for the next guy. When they pry him out of his car he will understand that signs are for him too.
