i used to run the older cannons with tthe 4 ft booms but the back of the boat was only 8ft. i had tangles in rough water so i went to a 3 rigger set up 2on the corners and 1 down the middle and then i was ok. now i have a wider boat and the extend a boom cannons and i still only run them out 4 feet and have had no problems with themand the dipseys are fine with them. i would stick to thee 4 footers and save the hassel with the longer swinging ball on the side.

What Did You Add During The Off Season
Empty Hook replied to GLF's topic in Great Lakes Fishing Discussion
well i was going to trade in or sell my cannons and try out the scotty riggers but just added 2 of my old ones to it so i have five. i can run the four corners or 3 set for salmon. when i pulled the boat out last fall the paint blistered off the bottom to the bare metal so im in the process of trying to get a new coat of paint on it before spring. also im in the process of putting together some planner rod and reel combo`s for browns and still want to put together a new salmon rod set up, going too try the SWR rig this year. few too much... -
i have always used off shore releases but last year with all the good talk about blacks releases here on the east side of lake O i tried one out on the middle rigger. i always have this one the deepest and i can say i never missed a fish using it. they are adjustable for light hitting browns to heavy smacking kings. easy to set just twist your line around your finger a few times and set in the clip. ill be switching all my releases this year to them.

so i have been thinking of this set up from last year but havent made one yet. when i let the line out and im all set up whats your guess to how much deeper this rig is running under the ball 5- 10 feet? seems like this would be a good rig also for staging kings in closer if you could keep it just off the bottom.

cut venisin into 1inch size cubes give or take with no fat on them, soak in a plastic bowl for 8-24 hours(depending on how much of the seasoning you want to soak in) in Itailian salad dressing place cubes onto scewers and place over camp fire or BBQ cook till done watch them get scarfed up as fast as you make them!

Empty Hook is the name of my boat, Im up to Empty Hook IV now. last spring i purcased a 1995 crestliner sabre for no. 4 the name came from in the late eighties we took a spring charter out of mexico bay on lake ontario and we didnt catch anything. we went down to the nice and easy convient store in pulaski and they had these little gold hooks that go on your hat brims so we all bought them and called ourselves the empty hook club cause we didnt catch anything. 2 years later i bought my first boat and headed for the lake armed with 2 little riggers and 4 poles for some brown trout fishing,i asked them if anyone wanted to go. then jokingly i said , cause the empty hook was going fishing and the name stuck. Empty Hook III and IV ( no. 3 for sale still)

went to the salmon river on friday the 13th to find the best run of salmon for the year, many large fish with agresive males, we landed about 20 and lost countless of them. sunday sat in the tree stand for the first time this year and in a hour this fat 5 pointer came by at 23 yards. it was a great weekend... 25 pound male king taken in the lower salmon river with a flyrod on a estaz egg pattern 5 pointer second day of the 2006 season

fished the LOC derby for 2 weeks with ups and downs between the waves and the water temps. started out slow then it picked way up then to crashed at the end with bitter cold water temps of 45 deg on the surface. we fished mainly echips and flies with chrome/mirage and green/ green getting the most fish. white with white or mirage flies took some along with the trusty ol` j plug. the biggest we could muster was a 28# king. we picked at them the first week then the gates opened up for 3 days of fishing. fishing in front of the salmon river with my wife and son on a 2.5 hr fishing trip, the first pass saw triples on with just 2 of us reeling, got all 3 in. manage 2 more that night.next pm went out with fishing fever boat for 2,5 hrs and went 5-9 in front of 9 mile nuke plant in 50 fow 25- 35 feet down. went there the next am it it started to happen, the water was flipping and the cold water was coming in. 46 deg on surface where we were the night before, so we move out to find temp. in 190 - 200 fow we found it and we proceeded to put the hurt on them , 10 - 15 with kings and 2 cohos. 20 - 35 feet down in 200 fow wow. i love it when they are not to deep the rod bounces and then slams down and starts to scream. next day the bay was full of ice water and the rains came. the estuary filled up and the fish scattered. we picked away some in front of the river with spoons and j plugs from 20 - 60 fow. oh well thats fishing. good luck the rest of the season to all, 2 more trips and the boat goes in for the winter and the fly rod comes out for them in the river. heres a pic of the 28# king. caught on a green echip green fly.

i boated a king this weekend with one on it, it went back to the deep minus the some parts and we took 1 brown this year with one on it. last year i boated a lot of the slimmy buggers. we camp on hte little salmon river, flat rock campsites, and the dec poisoned the stream this spring from parish down, they were dead eveywhere in the water after that. hopefully it did some good on the population of them.

i switched to the wisker bisquet 5 years ago and love the thing, easiest thing to tune, never drop and arrow, quiet. shoots alluminum or carbon arrows. with the new cut out window it is easier to knock an arrow to, i still shoot the origanal drop one.

fished for an hour saturday and storms chased us off the lake with 3-4 foot waves. sunday was flat fished in front of catfish creek in 60-90 fow, took 2 browns down 40 feet on MJ stinray and lost a screaming salmon and a jumping steelie, both hit a blue puke nk28 off the bottom, temps were 60 deg down 40` and 42 deg down 60`. south winds predicted this week probably bring in more cold water.

we got back up and running 75% yesterday with no by passing hurray! they installed a new transformer and we had a hazmat company in and pump all contaminated water out and clean the buildings. along with that oil in them we had a gas, desiel and kerosene tanks flip and a tractor submerged that leaked oil. DEC is happy the way it was cleaned. we had to wait for that to get done before we could go in and pull all the motors and pumps. these 12 - 14 hr days 7 days a week are getting to me = no fishing.......... -

i have noticed in the last few years more and more of the blood suckers coming aboard attached to fish. i took 2 12 inchers off abrown this year. afterthe poisoning of the lil salmon river this year for them they were evey where in the camp ground area of the river dead.( hurray) i hope they get a hold on them again. d***m they are nastey critters, and try to stomp on them when they are slithering across the deck. the long alligator style hook removers work wonders on them. -
if you need a ride on the lake let me know!

i can imagine what he found i work for a wwtp and cant imagine a plant with just primary treatment and discharging raw to the water. can you say major fine. we just had the worst flooding here in our area ever with up to 9 inches of rain and we couldnt help our discharge to the river. we are dead in the water litteraly. we are trying hard to get back up and running but our whole plant went under. heres 2 pics one of our plant and one of lucky boaters who some how had there boats survive the 26 foot above flood surge. they tied them to the bridge after they did a air boat rescue for all passengers. no fishing this weekend just pumping water and changing motors. -
got to hang in a tree.. love to bow hunt deer also hunt turkey and small game. i cut deer up during the season to help with the habit of fishing costs. shoot more deer so i can buy more fishing stuff........ please

slow is still the word in the bay. brown fishing is tough with a couple fish a day unless you can set the lines by 4 am by the plant. fished catfish area in 20-40fow bait and fish but they had lock jaw mostly. we manage a few. salmon are spread out in deeper water from 100 to 300 fow. flies off riggers and dipseys were working. green on green and green on mirage fly i heard alot of. hope to change around soon.

saturday 1 brown off of the salmon river on a spoon down 8 feet 15 fow. wind came up and we got blown off. nice temp and color. sunday after the blow the temp and color went north of the river. trolled there with 53 deg water and caught peppi la pu. saw 2 other boats with a fish on though. slooooow weekend here. reports from other known boats out in 150 - 160 fow did 6 kings out in front of 9 mile plant. oswego is still having a king bite with the kids division leader in LOC derby taking from there today aboard Miss`ems boat. its a big difference from last years brown fishery here. but there here for the presistant one. till next weekend.
