Correct. It actually has to do with the predator prey relationship between the phytoplankton, zooplankton and planktivores(Salmon prey) Low light conditions are perfect for all species to prey on and have less predation at the same time. The angle of the sun causes light to only penetrate the upper water column. This allows predators to attack from the darkness below into the light. The low light levels also give the prey a better chance against sight feeders than full daylight. Upper level schools will form to help against predation. Since most Great lakes planktivores are sight feeders, night feeding is low where they could have the best chance for survival. All this adds up to high concentrations of active baitfish and good predation characteristics in the upper water column for the salmon. They can see the food and it is concentrated for them. So they instictively are in active feed mode during that time whether there is bait around or not

Lake Erie still counting on 2003's walleye hatch
tgafish replied to News's topic in Great Lakes News
I'm thinking the 2007 hatch was bigger than they think. Caught a lot of them last year right on the edge of 15. I'm hoping this year will be like 2006:thumb: -
I'm no help Nick cause I got blanked when I fished there for a day a few years ago. One thing I can tell you is a navionics or lakemaster map is mandatory!! Bottom goes up and down very fast. I was over by sleeping bear and went from 140 to 35 in too short of time to get all my electrics up. I'd guess it was 20-25 seconds at trolling speed. Over by the islands looked like the same stuff.

I agree! I keep every laker I can get my hands on to stick in the smoker. By far my favorite smoked fish:)

New posts also here. I have direct links to the weather and temp pages so I don't go through here but I do use the web cams link pretty often

Depth chart for 30# and 45# copper
tgafish replied to DiverDennis's topic in Salmon Pro's Connection
I've used it and like it. A little more forgiving than 45lb -
Ended up 7 for a whole bunch. Broke one fly and had lots of knock offs and 1-2 second dipsey rips. Probably 10. We thought we were just seeing things or the releases were being weak but heard similar stories from everybody at the launch so I'm pretty sure they were fish. We found cold water at the 65 down mark in 100-115 fow. Took 6 of the 7 on spoons from a 7 color to 103 down. 90-100 down took the most hits. All kings 6-17lbs. Very fat fish!

Randy I'll trade you spots on the place board if you trade me prizes;) You lucky sob's won both things I was dreaming of!! Congrats guys!! -
Thanks Ken, The fish were snapping if you could find them. I went 21 for 26 over Friday and Sat. Just couldn't find the big guys Sat. Doesn't matter though cause the event is the most exciting part of my year. Months and months of planning and worrying, getting sponsors, hoping we'll get boats signed up and them BOOM! it's all over in a flash and a blur. I love hearing guys had a good time and enjoyed the tourney. We had a number of teams this year that fished it for the first time cause guys from last year recommended it. Hopefully that happens again:)

Thanks to everyone for the posts about the charity tourney. I'll have the results posted as soon as I can. Fishing was much better this year than last and we beat last years donation total. And that weather after all the crappy forecasts was a fantastic surprise:D What a great day! -
I retied my leaders for yesterdays tourney with Seagur 40# flouro and lost my first fish of the day from breaking it. Go figure. I caught 2 other nice ones on the same leader material on the other fly

Walleye flesh care, taste and preparation.
tgafish replied to Walleye Express's topic in Walleye Fishing Discussion
Bleeding them for a few minutes on a rope before putting them in the cooler also does wonders for the blood in the fillets -
Went out today with wife and kids and had our limit of 15 in an hour and a half only running 3 lines. Stupid easy fishing once you find them:D I'm keeping the boat over here for another week:grin:

I understand your logic but if you fish these events for the chance at money you'll always have a chance at being disappointed. The friendships and company are the real payoff. But again I understand the cost to get there is a hard pill to swallow. Fishing should be good out of PS July 11:grin:
