  1. Try back trolling the holes with the thunderstick and with Hot N Tots its killer on the Kalamazoo and St Joe.
  2. Kevin u r killin me! I guess old age has slowed me down but 4 footers even in my hardtop are really uncomfortable for a 65 year old. I envy you young guys that so the things I did 35 years ago.
  3. U DA MAN BEN too rough for me to even venture dn the channel.
  4. Aren't u glad coho don't get to 25#, u wouldn't be able to get em in the boat. Dang critters spin and they will jump like a steelhead.
  5. That is the program we use on dipseys tight drag to help set the hooks then back down and lst the fish run do not horse the fish
  6. mmmmm tasty!
  7. Yes but not recommended, i have seen it done many times.
  8. Good job on the fish! I have noticed that in St Joe the lights on the piers are not working and the south pier has no light on it at all. Another reason to slow down and pay attention to where u are at all times especially in the dark or Fog. Just because u have radar dont get on plane and try to run in the fog.
  9. See you on the water Thursday afternoon.
  10. Well went over to work on defective downrigger wiring and was really sorry we didnt go fishing this mornin. Every boat that came to the cleaning station at Brians Marina had limited out on Kings this morning. 3 boxes of 20 and 2 of 15 70 to 170 FOW 70 to 85 down. A flasher fly bite, blue white spinnie with a blue bubble fly was hot for capt Charlie of the fishin hole. All in the slips by 11AM gonna get out Thursday after my doc appt.
  11. Nice job, thanks for the info. maybe the fish are moving closer to the beach.
  12. Welcome to GLF Dan
  13. If u have to hand line the fish to the net your leaders are too long. I like to stretch it out too but I dont run any longer than the rod I am fishing. My dipsey rods are all 9'6 and 10'6 and I run apporximately 10 ft leaders on all but the important thing is remember these aren't Bass and u r not in a bass tourney. Take your time wear the fish down and u can bet they will come to net. The one issue we have is when people try to pump fish too quickly and slack between the rod and dipsey get it jumping and that will lose u fish everytime.
  14. I second the sharp hooks, I sharpen every hook that I take out of the package and touch them up regularly. I too have been having fish just come unbuttoned a lot lately. My catch ratio on full cores has been lousy. I normally set the drags light and have clickers on to alert the strike. We tighten the drags and I believe we have been trying to get the board into the boat too quicky. Gonna try letting the fish pull against a drag and the board a little longer to help set the hooks. Then the may be just striking short and hooks coming out. Its fishin not catchin.
  15. No but his Brother Ken The Silver King is 2 slips down from me.
  16. We are slipped at Brians Marina again this year, the last few years we have fished out of So Haven, for convenience sake but the price of slips drove us back to the Joe. In the 70's and 80's I slipped at Whispering willows and then at Molhagens in the channel. Left the big lake for a few years fm 96 to 2002 then got back into it with a small boat. Upgraded in 2009 and needed a slip. St Joe has more fish and is about 1/2 half the cost for a slip than S.Haven. So if u want to overthink it I have made St Joe my home port. Hope we can hook up on the lake just holler at the MC squared on68 if we are out will pass on info.
  17. Being that the last year I fished out of St. Joe was 1995 its a new shop for me and u r correct Charlie is a really good guy, in the past I always went to Tackle Haven, but not anymore the fishin hole has my business.
  18. It is Broadlows fishing hole, 269 982 3474. Really nice people and they will spool your reels for while u wait, I had to replace 2 300' of copper this morning, my partner really made a mess last night, and I wanted to run copper. Tackle Haven doesn't open til 7 and these folks are up early like all the good fishermen I know.
  19. Got a late start due to some non licensed fishermen, but found a new tackle strore in St Joe at the junction of Blue Star Hwy and Niles ave. They open @ 5:30 and are really well provisioned for the big lake angler. Nuff of that, cleared the piers as the sun was clearing the horizon and ran out to 100 ft on a N heading, set lines and trolled N to 175 FOW. We caught fish fm 125 FOW to 170 FOW. What was hot, Standard size Stingers n lemon Ice and green dolphin, Northport nailer chartreuse with black tape, at 64 and 61' respectively and 11" echip white paddle with sigs rig blue bubble fly dn 155 on the rigger, anything yellow or green in the smaller size spoons. The Meat never took a hit. the wire dipseys out 234 on 1.5 and 217 on 1 were both good with NBK and carmel dolphin Stingers. We got our first fish on a full core lemon Ice in 125 FOW and took fish all the way out to 170, on a north heading. Speed 2.7 SOG and we took fish on the N and S trolls nothing on the W or E troll. If u r familiar with the Joe N is straight offshore and the shortest way to deep water. Lots of boats out but spread out really well. Ended up 8 for 13, 6 Kings fm 6 to 18 lbs, 1 coho and 1 really nice Steelhead. The fish are staging in that 120 to 180 FOW and now is the time. Good fishing
  20. Good job will be out in the AM the boat is the MC2 and we standby on 68. I think I will go deep as the fish up and down the lake seem to be staging off shore. My friend captain Keith of Lie a lot charters in Ludington is fishing out on the 55degree line and boxing out on Kings when they can get out there.
  21. What Depth of water were u in?
  22. 1. Never never attach a board to the core sheath, let about 30- to 50 feet of backer out after all the core is in the water. 2. Yes a full core is 10 colors a half core is 5 colors. I have everything from 12 colors to 1 color on the boat and most get used regularly. I also have 300' of 45# copper and 200' of 45# copper. I usually only take the 300 coppers out because the cores cover all the depths that the 200 copper would cover,
  23. I have gotten steel when fishing specifically for steel fast troll speeds and upper part of water column in deep water in june and early july I dont use the wire divers for steelhead I go to my power Pro set ups and they rock. I do run long leaders, and long rods 12' dipsey rods and 12' leaders. The hardest part of the dipsey bite is keeping them on when the go aerial. We get a lot of fish that come off.
  24. Thats what being a good sportsman is all about. I had a similar situation with a walleye board this summer guy that found it called my number that is on all of my floating gear, and I got it back. GreatLakes Fisherman is a great site full of great people.
  25. Now thats an August fishin smack down, a real kill m and grill m day. Nice job.
