  1. The wire divers get a little deeper and that is about the only difference, the one thing u should look at is the rods. The Wire rods should at least have a twill tip but roller rods with a swivel tip are the recommended way to go if u have unlimited funds a Talora rod can cost more than the reel. I went to Wire last year and found I get more strikes and that I have a better hook to land ratio than I did with Power Pro. My dipseys were really good this year but unlike some I only run a max of 4. I do have 4 downriggers on my boat and they were the most consistant presentation of the year. If u have the money the fishhawk is a good deal because u dont have to use the coated cable, but the Depth raider I have works great.
  2. Good jpb Denny and Tarrey, that dipsey between u and the fish can cause a lot of problems on big fish, but its fishin not catchin.
  3. Been there done that had one come down right on top of me in 1986 out of Manistee.
  4. Wow Gordy! I really want to come to NY and fish Lake O one of these days. I just need to get the MC2 out of Lake Michigan and head your way. I am sure the good members of GLA will help get me on the fish.
  5. Thanks for the report as always well done Capt Ron.
  6. Tuesday we used Blue bubble fly and blue glow squids on DW Spin Doc's down 100 and 83 both caught fish, the difference is the squids have a better Hook set up than the fly's. The tandem single hooks give a better hook up than the single treble on the fly. (reason) Wider gap and better angle to the point than a treble hook. I still have about 100 Squids and I use them often.
  7. My partner and I left the slip at 5:30 ran out to 100 FOW and set lines on a NW troll. Well the fishing was not hot but we found a lot of fish not willing to bite. Fish count 1 Laker about 10 lbs and 3 Kings all in the 4 to 10 Lb catagory. Best depth was 110 to 118 and the best troll direction was ESE. Best baits only 2 fired Blue Dolphin DW and DW Blue Dolphin with a Blue Bubble Fly. Fish came 102 Dn 83 Dn and last fish was a 2# king on dipsey out 155 on 2 with a purple Fuzzy Bear. 2 other releases no one homeon either.
  8. Welcome Ron, I too am a transplanted Oregonian, been in the Midwest since 1967, I hope you enjoy your time here. The mission here is the same as in the Northwest, but a lot less commercial fishing and heavy traffic. Mostly recreational and sport boating along with Great Lakes commercial shipping. The lake is like a microcosm of the Ocean and she gets rough with a short chop rather than the huge swells. U will get a lot of calls. Thanks for your service.
  9. Capt Ron, Thanks again for a great report, and for the great info you give us
  10. Thats September on Lake Michigan everybody owns the Gaps or pierheads, and they all want to run long lines and boards. Not worth the grief we have been going out 6 to 7 miles 120 to 150 FOW and catching 2 and 3 year olds for the last 3 weeks. I got one fish at the pier heads in St Joe and left too many jerks and always 1 gotta go against the pattern. Good luck on the westside. If u ever want to try St Joe PM me and we can hook up my boat is in the slip all season long.
  11. Nice job on the solo for an experienced guy let alone a newbie.
  12. LMFAO kevin
  13. Thats the ticket go back out where u were in early August thru the middle of August the fish are there and the Steelhead will be cranking up soon. Same pattern a last fall.
  14. The best advice is to get a ride with an advanced fisherman and learn from his techniques. Another thing to remember is it takes time to get the feel of your boat when u finally start catching fish consistantly take notes in a log book and keep records of your lures speeds depths temps and all of the other things u r doing when successful. I log every fish with depth, temp speed, and time of day. Lures are important but not the most important thing. Speed and size are critical. This yr in St Joe the Alewives are small immature and the fish are full of them I downsized to standard stingers and the spoon bite was on. Yesterday it was direction of troll and dept of presentation. SE troll and 100 dn on the riggers was the deal also wire divers on 1 out 150 with standard size spoon as long as it was purple and white. This site has a lot of guys that will take u out and show what their program is. Pay attention to the Charter guys here they share a lot of info without getting too specific about locations. (its their livelyhood). When we catch 7 or 8 they are getting 15 or 20. Time of day get on the water befor sunrise and fish until noon to 1 PM then take a break the fish shut dn for a couple of hours and will start again about an hour and a half befor sunset. The fish do move deeper as the sun gets higher in the sky. Dont be afraid to go deep when everyone is fishing the mud. 50 boats in front of the piers yesterday and we went ot 100 FOW and Got 7 Kings. Above all dont be afraid to ask questions, the only dumb question is the one that is unasked.
  15. wrong date on the post. Was Saturday the 10th was also out Friday PM in the big stuff really sloppy Friday. Fished same area 100 to 120 2 fish.
  16. Good talking to you this morning too. I have a slip at Brians Marina. Slip 111 rt next to the Silver King.
  17. Took 3 friends out this morning out of St Joe and as ususal the weather was not supposed to cooperate. Had to stop and get 1 guy his License so we didnt get started until about 8 am. set down in the river trolled out and made 2 passes in front with 1 release on a stinger green dolphin. Then the commercial traffic started, 2 barges and then the Alpena a Great Lakes freighter came in, pulled lines and ran to 80 set down on a 330 degree troll and got all of the lines set at about 9 am. First fish was a small King on a purple people eater Fuzzy Bear on a deep diver on 1 out 150, next fish came after we turned and started back toward the beach in 120 FOW. Nasty; current today 100dn on rigger, Blue Green Dolphin Spin Doctor with a Blue Bubble fly nice 2 yr old king. re set and the rig had not stopped after we let it back out hit 100 and went again nice 15# female ripe spawn in her. Same rig went a total of 5 times and boated all 5 last fish was another 2 year old on the same deep diver as previous. Ended the day 7 for 9, All Kings. The speed was really hard to figure but as long as we went on a 120 heading we got hits all the way into 95 FOW. Really nice on the Pond today.
  18. Nice job Jim its a hoot when u double up solo.
