  1. Jim try running 1 or 2 colors of leadcore u will get 5 to 10 feet down and the presentation is good because of the leader to the flasher. I really like the 1 color with a 000 red dodger and a 4 foot leader to a firecracker Sigs coho candy it has been killer over the last couple of seasons. The short cores have really worked better than the keelweights for me.
  2. Thats gettin it done Jim. Prepping the boat this week, hope to fish the weekend.
  3. Now thats a fact and the real truth. U gotta love it to do it full time.
  4. In the future u can always become a charter operator, I would say yes get your Masters papers, go to school in the winter and work the Summers as a Captain.
  5. I use 50# Power Pro green and I go a little overboard I use 250 yards of 20# mono backer and 200 yards of power Pro. I also run 30# 7strand wire for a for my wire presentation. 1000 ft of wire on a convector size 30 Line counter. I prefer to use the power pro set up until I have to go deep. Say June and July.
  6. Albright!!!!
  7. That is the program.
  8. I introduced my friend Terry Overloop to the Willis knot yesterday, he is new to big lake boat ownership and is just getting started. We used 20# mono( he did not want to try braid) took him 1 time of watching me and a little coaching and he got it down pat. We spooled 2- 10 color setups, a 2- color and a 3- color. so he did it a few times. Use the willis knot to attach your leader too.
  9. Kevin u know u have to go where the fish are, but The river plume is generally the warmest water around and the fish tend to like that. I found a few north last year but never got 7 miles north until May. The Browns will be on the beach and you are one of the best at gettin em. Your small boat lets u do what my bigger boat can't and sometimes I am envious.
  10. Willis Knot, but u have to put some super glue on about 6" of your braid then follow the instructions for the Willis knot after the super glue has fully dried, give it about 30 minutes. The video link that Jon gave is right on. If the braid wont insert into the end of the lead core sheath, u can use a small needle run it thru with the braid attached by the eye, bring the needle out of the sheath at the end of the lead and pull the braid on thru then trim the end and finish the knot as shown. I have never had the Willis knot fail. For short cores just use your 20# Mono as your backer.
  11. Lots of motels and hotels in St Joe and Benton Harbor, I suggest u look in St Joe first. Use the St Joe launch, there is a 5 dollar daily parking fee but the launch is really nice and it is safe from vandalism. Cant say the same for the Benton Harbor DNR launch. If u want tackle u can find the fishin hole in ST JOE. Good folks.
  12. Great Lakes Planer, Not too expensive, u can get a pair of 3 rod trees for under $300 on ebay. I put em on my boat last year and really like them. My son has the big Jon's on his boat but they are about double the money for the angle adjustable feature.
  13. U dont need riggers, We will be out of St Joe again this year, for spring coho, get some #0 dipsy's use about a 6' leader to a 000 dodger any color as long as it is red, about 30" of leader to a Siggs Rigs coho candy fly, ( I prefer something with gold and red) u can run several of these, then the Brads thin fin in Red coach dog pattern on mono boards and u cant go wrong. Find the warmest water in the area, usually the river plume or go south to the Chalets and fish to the Power plant. U dont need to be any deeper than 25 FOW and fish the top 10'. The fact is coho are a piece of cake. Everyone limits out regularly. Give us a call on channel 68 we can help u out. Just call the MC squared. Always glad to pass on info. If u PM me I will give u my cell #. BTW the Dirty Dog Kicked my but last year. See ya out there Terry.
  14. Love the fish PORN WTG on the Big Man.
  15. Perfect.
  16. Captain Keith Kloet of the LIE A LOT in Ludington tells me that he runs between 1.5 and 1.8 mph when he is pulling meat, he starts befor daylight with the normal glow spoon and flasher fly combination then switches to all meat after the AM bite quits. He uses herring strips and spin doctors with 3 fly rigs on all of his rods, his boat is a 34' Chris Craft Commander. and he runs a 16 rod set up. Speed is critical when running the meat rigs. When he fishes with me on the MC2 we fish out of St Joe in the spring and it is the basic coho pattern that any one can catch fish on. No meat unitl about the first of June. I havent tried much meat but am gearing up to go whole hog this year in St Joe. I will be fishing with Keith in Ludington some too. So I can keep this thread informed as to my findings.
  17. Welcome to GLF Joel there are a lot of guys here that fish the 6th street dam and they will surely help u out if you ask.. Check some of the earlier posts in January and early Feb. I am sure u can get some good tips.
  18. I use the Okuma Classic Pro dipsey rods for copper and for wire dipseys, just forget the rollers and put a $3.00 twill tip on and you have a great setup. the twill tips keep the knot from catching on the tip and my CL55 L rods have big enough level winds that I have no problems with the copper setup. The wire I run on smaller linecounter CL series reels the 45 LC works really well. I like the 9' rods over the 10 footers, more control of the rod tip, but that is just me. I use the 8' rods for dipseys. CPDD 8' with the twill tip is the nutz for the dipsey presentation.
  19. I use 45# copper I have 2 300' rigs and 2 200' rigs I still run 10 color lead but never when I am running the 200 copper. 45# copper with 300' in the water at 2.5 mph troll speed will get you down around 80' I slow down for mid summer and have drug bottom in 100 with that rig. the 200 will get down around 50' too close to the 10 color lead for me.
  20. This post just about says it all. 1 more thing u might want to look at is Captain Ken Neidlinger has a couple of Videos out that help newcomers with the basics. He does not however go into wire and leadcore techniques. He has been fishing out St Joseph for over 40 years and is a wealth of knowledge if you can get to know him. I slip just down from him and have known him for all of 35 years. His brother Dennis Neidlinger developed the Pro King spoon some years back. Ken runs the SilverKing charter boat and is still going strong at 74 years young. If you want to take an early trip for Coho give me a pm and I will let you know when the MC2 is going to get in the water, always glad to help a relative newcomer find some programs that work. I am thinking the last week of March if weather continues as it has.
  21. Great Greg hope we can fish the Coho bite in late March or early april. Stay in touch, u can call me @ 269 929 4221

    Mike

  22. I dont run 30# copper but I do run 300' of 45# copper, and I run 4 riggers, 4 dipseys and 6 long line presentations. I use Church Walleye boards they do just fine with copper and cores. I like to run the Copper inside then a fullcore setup, and on the outside a 5 to 7 color for Steelhead, This works well during the Summer, but in the spring I run more shallow presentations and up to 8 boards 4 dipseys and 4 downriggers. You always should run your presentations in a V deep in the center and shallower as you go out away from the boat. As to tangles with Copper and Core hmmmm why are you turning sharp enough to cross them? Keep your turns wide and dont let your boards get behind your boat. No tangles.
