What depth of water were u fishing? Nice job on the feesh. -
This is good information from a Charter Captain Thanks Josh for the thread, too many guys never try changing lengths of leaders and never get a pattern on their flashers and fly setup.

The perch should be moving in closer as the water heats up. -

Nice work like usual Jim. -
If u want the board to release, u need to attach a speed bead about 4 to 5 ft above the swivel, it will keep the board from hitting the swivel and diving or knocking a fish off. The better way is to set them tight so they dont release, set the drags on your real loose with the clicker on, when the fish strikes, tighten the drag point the rod tip at the board and reel the board to the boat, if u keep the rod tip down the board will not dive. U only lift the rod tip when u r close enough to lift the board out of the water, then remove the board and fight your fish on a loosened drag. We never have a board dive on us when we do it right.

There are more Steelhead this year than I can remember, the fishing has been phenomenal,and best of all I haven't had to resort to Lake Trout fishing to get fish in the box yet. June has been unexplainably good for St Joe. Sunday we had 3 Steelhead 1 king and 1 coho, but lost 5 Steelhead. 2 were rite behind the boat as we were about to net them, jumped and came unbuttoned, what a hoot. -
Thanks Josh. I couldn't agree more. Back befor the water cleared up due to the quagga mussels, we only ran a leader about 2 times the length of the flasher we used. Mostly 0 dodgers or hoochie mamas. Now my boat does best with a leader lenght of about 48" from what ever flasher I am using. The exception is in the coho spring fishery with the 000 dodgers and small flies we run about 18" from dodger to fly.

Left the pier heads at 6:00 AM started setting lines in 55 FOW and trolled W to 110FOW. Picked away at em until 11:00 and ended the day 5 for 10, 3 Steelhead a nice coho and 1 King. What worked- Thin Fin gold red back and Thin Fin Red coachdog both on 6 colors. Orange Killer on wire dipsey out 140 set on 1, craigs christmas on 300 copper. and Orange Killer on rigger dwn 65. I am thru with "Sampo" swivels had another sampo split ring pull out and cost us a spoon and a really nice king. The 'Steelhead are all over the place, and they are acrobatic. We lost 2 when the jumped right behind the boat. What a fun Morning on a flat lake with a slight breeze.

Moon Phase vs Quality of fishing

Use the city launch, Insta Launch has issues with water depth and the RR bridge can cause problems for boats with Canvas tops that are too high.We took our top off in 1985 when the water came up overnite. It is also prone to getting silted in at Manistee Lake. The city Launch is right in the turning basin and there is plenty of parking. -
Perch Reports?
SUPERTRAMP replied to Wasabi's topic in Michigan Waters Fishing Reports - Salmon and Trout
My buddy Terry Overloop got 33 nice 10 to 12 inch perch and a 29" steelhead Saturday in St Joe, north of Jean Klok Park off Rocky Gap in 42 FOW. -
Like Ken said Albright knot to attach both copper to backer and leader to copper, if u r more comfortable u can tie a haywire twist on the copper and solder the twist then use the albright knot to attach the leader and backer, I have found that this creates a smaller attachment and goes thru the eyes better. I also use twill tips on my copper rods seems to work well for me.

The steelhead will probably move out a little but will be staging to run the river shortly. Skamania are really a hoot and u can get steel most of the time out on the skum line in deep water. Look for the temp break on the surface and fish the inside edge of the scum line. Fast moving spoons in the top 30 feet can be really a lot of fun I usually run 2 to 6 colors of lead and spoons any kind as long as it has orange or a combination of orange on it. DOC has been good in past years and the Tequila sunrise by Fuzzy Bear has been good too. Speed should be 3mph plus. -

Always great to keep the young ones interested, nice job goin for the Cats. Great fight and some fine eatin too. The transderm scope patches work really well for the small ones, just be sure they apply about an hour befor leaving the dock. -
My partner fished the morning bite in St Joe. Fished the outside of the mudline, ended up with 7 for 14 with 2 broken leaders costing fish. The riggers were firing for him in 85 FOW, fishlander watermelon was the hot deal down 60 and on the low divers on 1 out 150 and 130. Best fish was a 38" King that weighed in at just over 20#. He was off the water by 11:30 trying to beat the heat. Some day I am gonna get to go fishin again. BTW another friend went perch fishing out of St Joe ended up keeping 33 nice perch and a 29" Steelhead that his 12 year old grandson caught on a perch rig. WTG Terry Overloop. Perch were north off Rocky Gap in 42 FOW.;

Larry keep the reports coming, I would rather have the steelies on than put them in the boat any way what a hoot.
