I have a Volvo penta aq 225e outdrive. Today running in after fishing all day right at the channel the boat made a dragging type sound (we were in deep enough water 12 ft) then it started making a thunk sound. as I slowed down it was slower speed up and the tempo increased. put it in neutral and then reverse no thunk sound even when I goosed it in reverse. You could also feel the thunk in the back of the boat. when I was at the slowest idle (500 rpm) and in gear it wasn't noticeable. as soon as I went from 500 to 800 rpms it would start again. Anyone have any ideas?

Well we got rained out saturday and the wind came up something fierce so we decided to try sunday. Drove from my parents down to monroe and it was quite windy by the time we got the boat in the water and out into the bay we had to throw the lures at the water to make them stick needless to say we didnt fish long and headed to the marina. I did test out my new EV sport pilot. and it is totally awesoms. setup took 5 minutes as all you have to do with the new unit is the dockside thing. no going in circles to get the compass calibrated and doing the auto learn. Put in a waypoint hit track and with the rough water and wind it kept us right on track even in the slop. Very impressed with it.

All the great lakes have currents. This site give a good look at currents at the surface and at depth. http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/glcfs/currents/ it works best in google chrome.

rudder reference for raymarine spx-5r?
Line Dancin replied to rbradley's topic in General Discussion
The new EV sport pilots come with it and they recommend using it. I talked to raymarine about it and they said you can set the angel and hard over time but it is still no where near as accurate as having the rudder reference. It is also protection from stripping the gears in the motor as it will never hit the stops if it is installed and working properly. I had done like they said i would have had problems as it is set at 30 degrees port and starboard. You also need to set the hard over time which is a calculation that you have to make after timing the device steer from hard port to hard starboard and then enter that into the unit and that is what tells the computer where your center rudder is. Again he said your unit will search for that point and work a lot more. Mine when the rudder reference calibrated showed me 27 degrees port and 28 degree starboard. The gyro replaces the fluxgate compass and makes keeping a heading easier. -
Mine came with it. Get it if you can it may be a pain to install it but it made configuring it so easy and you dont have to worry about the steering box oversteering into your stops and stripping the gears in the motor. Take your time and read the instructions a couple times. Dont rush i took a whole weekend to get mine done.

well enough snow finally melted by this afternoon making it possible to drag the boat out of storage:D. Opened it up this afternoon and took a look at what was needed to install the auto pilot. after a trip to the hardware store I have what I need to get the job done. Biggest thing was trying to figure out how to connect the rudder reference transducer. So I got to work and got the ball mounted to the steering arm that was fun to drill trough. After it got dark I spent some time fabing a spacer to get the rudder reference transducer in line with the steering arm. That is tomorrows project then to installing the rest of it which shouldn't be to bad to do,
