  1. Walleye on erie will be a dissapointment for you in the fight area. When one hits they come up to the surface and just lay there while you reel them in. the way you have a walleye down there or a junk fish is to watch for the fish on the surface with it mouth open. If you thought a laker was a log and no fight wwit till you get a walleye on. 3/4 of the time they will not trip a dipsy let alone make a reel scream. But they sure are worth the chase eating wise. I am actually going to lite bite slide divers for walleye this year. Big boards will be your friend down there. I have otterboats that i use. and pull up to five rods per board. two divers and two riggers. All with 12lb test and ministreaks. Pinks and purples with copper backs are best.
  2. Man that sucks. Call weller auto some items can be welded and work just fine.
  3. yeah working the MUCC booth again this year every day.
  4. Sounds good jim. Have fun with it this summer. Hopefully i can get back to work full time soon and be able to afford to fish a few.
  5. have been using 26lb big game the last few years as it has been cheaper than Ande. We used to use ande over big game as ande used to be cheaper than big game. Both are great lines and you cant go wrong with either.
  6. I'll agree with Mark on the chipping from a haywire twist the individual strands sticking out and catching the guides. i junked a couple rods because of that exact problem. Now i am running all copper designed rods with my copper rigs. Maybe on the cheaper rods it is a problem but it was a problem i also had the issue of nocking the inserts out as tony described.
  7. I mainly use my big boards for walleye and my inlines for salmon. The reasoning is that fishing for walleye all my gear is set the same distance back. If the fish are hitting at 70 back then all my rods are within ten feet of one another 65, 70, 75. With salmon i am fishing with different lengths of copper(75, 150, 300) and lead core(2, 3, 5, 10 colors). When you are fishing with everything the same distance back everything is at the same depth when a fish hits it rises in the water column and pulls back behind all the other rods. With different lengths your deepest always needs to be near the boat. to avoid tangles. this is where inlines prevail as you can reset the line you caught a fish on without having to reel in everthing attached to a big board. Now if you are running the same length copper you can run a couple on a big board and you dont have to pull the other line you just move it down towards the planer board and reset the line and feed it down tho where the one tou just moved was at.
  8. Where are you located? there is a fishing show in the novi michigan area this weekend. Okuma makes a very nice copper ro for about 40 bucks. they usually have them at the shows for about 35 - 30 bucks. they are about half the price of the shimano copper rods. I have 6 total and 4 shimanos and the okumas are holding their own against the shimanos.
  9. Pool noodle!! Best thing in the world and cheap. Cut it into twelve inch pieces. With a sharp knife or utlity blade: Cut a V down the center half way to the center. Mark both sides of the v with a marker to make a straight cut. cut around the circumferance half way to the center. It will hold 10 leaders. Get the bigger diameter noodle with the small hole. gander sells them for 2 or three bucks. this is my walleye noodle you can see this one has a couple leaders at 6' ea in length. you can see the marker marks on the one pic it really helps to keep your cuts straight. Make your cuts one inch apart.
  10. Is it a CB or a Marine Radio (vhf)? My dad used to get that noise in his small boat. He put in a filter and it helped. But that was back in the day of paper graphs. I hate electrical problems like that. this is similar to what he used. I also put one in last summer trying to take care of my problem: http://www.sportsimportsltd.com/10ampauelnof.html I have another one i am going to install on the fish finder.
  11. "Tuesday, January 18 - Asian Carp: Taking the Fight to Our Backyard Time: 6:00 - 8:00 pm Have you ever wondered what fisheries managers are going to do if the Asian Carp reaches our local waterways? Well, come find out as Dr. Dan O’Keefe, a wildlife and fisheries biologist and Extension Educator for Michigan Sea Grant, presents information about the infamous Asian Carp. He will give the audience an opportunity to discuss what should be done if the carp makes it into the Great Lakes and local watershed, including the Grand River. You will be put in the position fisheries managers making decision regarding what to do if the Asian Carp makes its way into the Grand River. It’s not an easy decision. Where: John Ball Zoo – Ball Room of the Zoo Administration Building (upstairs level) Who: This program is presented by Dr. Dan O’Keefe, wildlife and fisheries biologist and Extension Educator for Michigan Sea Grant. This event is open to the public, is geared toward an adult audience and hosted by the John Ball ZooDoers." I thought i would post this to let everyone know. I amnot sure if i can make it to this but it sounded interesting.
  12. OK sounds good Jim. I have no clue on electrical stuff.
  13. I talked to johnsons in ludington and they think it is the alternator. the plugs are new and wires new last season. It has a new distributor in it from three years ago and the cap and rotor replaced last season in the tune up also. When they did the new distributor i went to an electronic and got away from points. I really dont have the money right now to do an alternator as i am still not working very much. I had the alternator rebuilt about 4 years ago. I did put an inline filter in for the marine radio. it cut down the noise but i am still getting some noise when transmitting. The fish finder i have to use the built in noise reduction which decreases the sensitivity on the unit. I want to be able to use it without having the nosie reduction turned on. i have on the one battery the boat connections to the post and the marine radio and the fishfinder to the other post. the down riggers and other stuff is hooked to the second battery.
  14. i cant find anything is the manuals that tells me that. I am elertrically ignorant so i am not sure what to even look for to be honest
  15. I already have a two bank system that everthing on the boat is connected to. But: After going to a seminar and talking with Lance Valentine. It was suggested to have a battery not in the charging system to get away from noise issues. I have had a noise issue and am considering doing this to eliminate my noise problem. I have determined it to be when the engine is running , when i shut off the engine my noise problem vanishes. So i am looking at two different batteries a 105 amp hour and a 115 amp hour. What does the amp hour rating mean. How long would a battery last running a fish finder gps combo unit HDS-5 and a marine radio.
  16. I run a similar setup 8'6" beam four riggers two divers and up to 8 boards or four divers and 6 boards as long as i have enough people on board. Make really slow long turns and you'll have no problems. I agree withthe other info in this post.
  17. The only reason i buying chamberlains if for when i am walleye fishing lake erie. Keep the blacks for big water fishing.
  18. I tie an albright and then a dab of fishing line glue. The knot cant work loose as it is glued in place. As far as the twist unless you put shrink tube over it, it will catch on the guides, and fray up and is just a pain. I have tried that method and didn't personally like it to much. I also dont like putting heat that near my mono when using heat shrink. Knock on wood i have not lost a copper since i went to this method four years ago.
  19. About time they are going to actually listen to people, hopefully it will do some good.
  20. Mark has been doing it the same way. He is just packing the cavity full of tuna.
  21. I'm gonna pick a couple up and try them. A friend of mine who used to run lots of cut bait, said after using one of these with tuna in garlic oil, he will never use herring again.
  22. best price new is at www.walmart.com for line counters. 65 bucks and free shipping to your local store. I bought two more just before christmas. I just checked there site and they are currently out of stock you just have to check every week as when they do get them they go really fast. Also these are the new style with the wide mouth line guide, there not some old ones that have been in a warehouse that are being cleared out.
  23. It runs from the 13 - 16th. I like dons drive in better just down the road. THey have the BEST milkshakes.
  24. The Novi show has a lot of different vendors than the grand rapids show does. It is also just a fishing show where grand rapids is a outdoors show. It could be worth the trip ken if you want something a little different than the GR show. Saturday Lance Valentine is doing a two hour seminar at 2 that is on sonar and gps. I went to his short one last year and am really looking forward to going to this longer one. Only bad thing about Rock Financial is they hit you for parking as well as admission into the show.
  25. MUCC is actually not going to have a booth at the show this year. So i won't be working that one. But i will still be there as a patron and be able to see the show for a change in a relaxed manner. I'll stop by i have to see Chip.
