What's your favorite laker fishing method?
Line Dancin replied to dogfish's topic in Salmon Pro's Connection
Everyone claims lakers are nasty unless somked, WRONG. the trick to frying a laker (even the big ones) is to remove the skin first and remove the fat layer under the skin. remove the lateral line. then pan fry in breading. The trick to frying we learned in the late 70s is to get the oil in the skillet hot enough to light a wood match when it is dropped in. Deepfryers typically dont get hot enough. when it hits that temp start fring your first batch. the hot oil will cook the fat out and you are left with a great tasting piece of fish for dinner. Bortells in ludington used to fry your fish for you and they had one fryer dedicated to frying lake trout that was hotter than the other fryers jsut for lakers. That was before Mr. Bortell passed and his son Chris took over. -
i would put a platform across the back like others have said. or take jimmy up on his offer. They sell the brackets alone at west marine. http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=13941&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=11151&storeNum=10105&subdeptNum=10397&classNum=10399 Mount it just a couple inches above the highest point over your outdrive leaving a couple inches when it is up all the way. Probably about the area of the thicker black trim line. Personally if it were me i would take up jimmy on his offer and use the money you would have spent to buy tackle.

If i can choose a second it would be Happy Meal or Double trouble Moonshine. I have 8 of each in my box right now.

As far as price goes you are not going to beat what West Mich Prop does for the money. I did the pricing game a few years ago. Also they get all of the demo props from Michigan Wheel propellor manufacture. If you call michgan wheel they will tell you to use west mich prop. They must have some kind of agreement between them. I picked up a demo volvo long hub from them for 145. It was demoed out to a customer from Michigan Wheel. All that was wrong with it was the splines were marked a little (paint) from putting it on an outdrive. That prop runs almost 400 bucks new. A reman one was like 125. You can UPS it to them and they will repair it and UPS it back to you within a week or two.

I'll have to start carrying my camera on the boat and actually get involved in this, this year.

Ya know i haven't got a fish on that color either. everyone claims it is great though so i keep on trying it.

Picking one is hard. But one that produces fish all day long is a green glow Pro King Mag

If that system is tuned right and the previous owner didn't change out the pro it should trool down to 1.5 1.6 as is. My dads friend in ludington had one of the exact same rigs same motor with oem prop and could troll for lakers no problem without doing anything. Unlike my dads boat that we had to have a beaver troll on to stop the cannon balls from skipping.

The best method for determining the length of the lead between the dodger and bait is three times the length of the dodger you are using. This is a method that was taught back in the late 70s early 80s and has always worked. I cant remember who it was that came up with that. I was like 8 yrs old at the time but remember my dad always doing it that way. I also remember it from a speech at the detroit are steelheaders from when i was a kid and actually payed attention to a speaker. From the cannon ball to the dodger 10 ft was the other part to the success of the dodger peanut/spin n glo /glow squid rig. edit the best dodger we use is a white luhr jensen with lazer tape on both sides and a green glow squid. SHHH dont tell everyone my dads secret rig. -
I've kept quiet on this one till jims post. and i do agree with him. I wouldn't want a name coming from an anti fishing group like they are. I wish they would stop promoting that show and giving them more money. It is like supporting PETA. Chris that was a funny comment lol stingray for a boat name lol

same as everyone else. If you let the mags out to quick they tangle badly.
-
Thanks Jim. I am going to get in touch and see what he can do for me.

3.75 they are claiming by spring. What a crock of crap... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110121/ap_on_re_us/us_oil_prices I thought obama said he was going to take care of the gas prices as the repubs were in control of big oil and he would take them on. When is he going to do something when it is 5 bucks a gallon.

Welcome. If you have any questions even if they seem dumb to ask. Ask them here! You will get great answers from the people that are more than willing to help on this site.

I agree with this statement. there really isn't that much difference. I do like the tighter twisted stuff atomic opti and morgans as it is easier to tie an albright with it.
-
I have mine set up. figured if it was there may as well take ten minutes and set it up. It is a neat saftey feature.
-
Dave i went from 15 to 20. Fish hit it the same with far less breakoffs.
-
I just noticed my typo not 26 but 20 lb big game.
-
Oh ok I thought you were talking insire the boat man thats to bad that that had to happen. Sorry. Good luck getting it fixed.
-
i am changing my initail statement after looking at my log. i run three 45# opti brand copper lengths. length depth 75 / 10-20 150 / 30-40 300 / 70-80 so i would think 100 would be around 20-30. depending on speed and currents.

I did a search and found some info on repairing a bell housing. I actually found it by searching flywheel cover as that is what it is called in the marine world i just learned. Give Todd a call at Johnsons Surpreme Marine. If any one can fix it they can and i am going up there soon to check on my boat. 1-800-843-9630 http://www.johnsonssupreme.com/marine.htm I found this in one article: The bell housing only houses the flywheel, clutch pack (or torque converter ), and is what attaches the transmission/outdrive to the engine. It carries no fluids so it can't leak. So in most cases it can be welded on and repaired. Unless the crack is through a bolt hole.

I agree with this. It will be right around that 20.
