Correct. Also turn your ping speed at lease to 80%. Take the sensitivity off manual and you will have to adjust it up to arournd 75%. Turn off your noise reduction that is set to low from the factory. Dont use fish id. Fish id sets the unit to a low sensitivity mode. Also when you learn to read your screen and it will take a little practice you want to see noise on the screen. Little black dots not blue. when you get that noise on the screen to where you are just seeing it that is when you get the best target seperation and can see the fish on the bottom as fish and not debris. I learned this all through Lance Valentines seminars otherwise i wouldn't know how to use the thing properly. Order his disc on gpa and sonar and you will learn more than what i posted here. I am still trying to learn everything after two years of being to his seminars and ordering the discs. link: http://www.walleyekid.com/inc/sdetail/4560/8609

Don't let it get wet. I went thru 3 hds 5 before I had them return my money and I got the bird. I have heard that they solved the water intrusion problems they had with the units I had but in the end I am just as happy with the bird I ended up with, HDS units are awsome finders and I wouldn't tell anyone otherwise Its the customer service that sucks Lance Valentine offers some great lowrance electronic classes and has a dvd on sonar basics that covers Lowrance products not the hds series but the funtions are the same

Well it is to late for my method. I use different sized reels for different lengths of copper. 30dx for 75' 700 tekota for 150' 800 tekota for 300' cv55l for 400' for lead i kind of followed suit with different sized reels when i used a lot of lead. My next way it to use a contrasting pait pen and label the reel and the bottom of the reel seat so you can tell by looking for the length.

Boat horns, I HATE them. they get water in them and are toast. I put a new one on four years ago and mine is shot again. tested with another horn for my buddys boat and swith and power are fine. So i decided not to buy another one for 40 bucks and instead got a handheld electric horn from cabelas. 20 bucks and i am legal. Doesn't sound like a boat horn but this thing is louder than my boat horns have ever been. As often as i have needed it i decided this was the better route. I think the only time i ever really used it was during a courtesy exam from the Coast Guard. here is a link to the horn i am talking about: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Innovative-Lighting-Electric-Handheld-Horn/700627.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch%2F%3FN%3D1100515%26Ne%3D1100515%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dhorn%26Ntx%3Dmode%252Bmatchall%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts%26WTz_st%3DSearchRefinements%26form_state%3DsearchForm%26search%3Dhorn&Ntt=horn&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products

This is a newer one i have removed it a bunch of times since christmas. There is also one that is called micrsoft security essestials 2011. They are essentially the same program. If it has the 2011 after the security essentials it is the virus. Problem is, is it looks just like microsoft security essentials a valid virus removal program. Maleware byts works well to remove it. But you must also run rkill before you run maleware bytes to kill the processes first so it doesn't leave keyloggers behind. Once that is done run ccleaner to remove all the fake .dlls that are installed and created by the maleware. RKILL: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill malewarebytes: http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=malewarebytes&platformSelect=Windows&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows ccleaner: http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=ccleaner&platformSelect=Windows&tag=srch&searchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows&filter=platform%3DWindows these are secure sites and safe to go to. We install the licensed full copies at the shop when we clean a system. The free copies do the same thing just without the real time scanning.

No i dont have pics of the damage. When i took it in i only noticed a chip in the gel coat right at the bunk. when they jacked it up to fix that spot is when they found the damage and then they began looking everything over again and found the second spot. That was right at teh end of the season so i just left it in ludington for the winter. yesterday was the first time i have seen it since the second saturday in sept las year.

If you want to read the whole story i would post a link but i cant seem to find the thread on it. anyways here are the pics of the repairs. Thanks God for good insurance as it only cost me out of pocket 500 bucks for all the work they did. I will give a plug for Johnsons Supreme Marine in ludington on the great job. you can see my big little fisherman in this pic: edit found the link finally for the whole story: http://www.greatlakesfisherman.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19759&highlight=crappy+end

May not be able to help much on the water over there. but there is no dumb question on here when it comes to learning to fish. These are a great group of guys. You wont get bashed like on some other sites for asking a question.

I have the same setup. hook the leads to each battery not just one.

I think it is 29 a month. for all the features. For basic weather it is like 13 a month. Here is a lnik to sirius marine weathers site. I have the 29 dollar service. I get what is called marine zone forcasts and they are a ton more accurate then NOAA. You can set up alarms on the weather. Like Jay D was saying about lightening strikes. I have mune set for 15 miles. IF there is a lightening strike in that zone that the GPS makes all kind of noise to let me know. http://www.siriusxm.com/marineweather Edit also with the 29 dollar one you have instant access to the weather bouys and sites along the coast to see what the lake is doing out furter.

When it first came out they claimed to show wave height on the great lakes also. So i was calling daily about it not showing wave height on the great lakes. I was also calling lowrance. Lowrance said the unit was set up to do it call sirus. Sirus finally got me in touch with their engineering dept afte about 30 phone calls. I was told that the satellite currently can't do the great lakes They thought it would be able to and advertised it as so. and found out afterwards that it couldn't for whatever reason. but they have planned a new satellite in 2015 that will be able to show wave height on the great lakes. There might be a setting to change it cause they also use numbers or colors to display wave height at teh same time.

I screwed the dates up and i waited till oct first to get my tabs specifially for the passport. I should have said till sept 30th.
-
My lowrance shows the temp by number and is spot on. Whis it showed wave height like it does for costal waters.
-
LOVE LOVE LOVE it. surface temp is awesome. can find the breaks without searching. just scroll across the screen and set a point to go to. I dont have the radio hooked up but with the lowrance hds units you can, and i believe the other you can listen to the radio at the same time. That thing saved my but last year from being drenched. My friends top of the line radar showed no rain sirius weather did and severe. we decided to run. We were out by the islands on erie and docked at brest bay marina in monroe. make it back and in the truck just as it let loose. That was the storm last year that took out cabelas in dundee. I have a post on here abouth that trip. Edit i couldnt imagine going out with just noaa weather on the marine radio any more.

My wifes vehicle plates expire in august so i was concerned about this also. What i was told. I need to check on it again as this was just as things were getting rolling with the new passport. when your plates renew after jan 1 then there is the option to upgrade to the sticker with the passport included. If it isn't time to renew then you are exempt till they renew. Say your plates dont renew till october 31st then you wont have to pay anything this summer for launching. But when your plates renew then you have to do the passport. They were trying to design a way that was fair with the change. According to the dnr person i talked with at the show if you dont upgrade at the time of your plates they are supposed to have something to purchase it at the gates to the state park. It still wasn't decided when i asked about it if it was going to be the 10 dollars or the 15 dollars. Another thing that is coming i heard through the grapevine in the next couple years. All the walk ins that don't pay to use the park and don't buy the passport are going to charged a daily access fee. My Dad heard this when he was at the Camo at the Capitol a few weeks ago. I am actually for it as it will put more money back into the DNR coffers to upgrade and maintain the parks systems. That money collected by the park will be able to be used by the park for upgrade not go into the general fund like or plate passport money is doing. MUCC hasn't made a decision on whether they will support this change or not. They actaully have to change the state charter to make that happen. But it is coming. It is estimated that almost 2/3 of the people entering and using the state parks are not paying anything to use the parks. They are trying to model all the other state that when you use a park whether walk in or not everyone pays a use fee to maintian the park. Sorry for getting off topic here just thought this was kind of inportant and goes along with the passport changes.
