  1. the holland launch is a nightmare not a zoo. I hate coming in. Launching isnt usually an issue. two weeks ago there were people launching in all the lanes. dnr dude was telling people to back in including retrieve lanes and telling boats coming in they had to wait. I was a little poed after waiting for two boats to launch so as soon as a boat backed out i pulled in while he was directing someone to back in and telling me i had to back out. I came in on a retrieve lane. I shut of my engine raised the outdrive and proceded to walk right past the dnr guy insisting i back out. Went and got my truck and trailer and backed around the guy he had staged. Once i did that two othe boats did the same thing. we all had an exchange with the dnr guy about that as a group. If i get qa chance i am calling lansing about that launch. If you go to any of the other high traffic launches (sterling state and bolles harbor specifically) that are state owned they typically have a guy or two just directing traffic to avoid problems. They were doing that at hooland but the manager doesnt think it is necessary with the discussion i had with her last week about this incident.
  2. Welcome aboard Ryan. I have talked to you a little on the other site. Mainly a lurker there. The guys on here are great and willing to help a rookie without the negative replies that you see on some of the other big lake boards. Your contributions are greatly welcome as we are all learning every day. Something some people just cant understand on some of the other boards. I too have been at this for a long time about 30 years now starting with my dad in the late 70s.
  3. Thats waht i was thingking also as this afternoon went on. I only have a couple weekends that i can fish left do to family garbage. Wifes nieces birthday brothers wedding(what the H was he thinking to get married during fishing season) Cousins wedding the last weekend of sep all are the other side of the state or ohio. Then Bow opens. SO if i play this weekend right then i gain the weekend of the 15th
  4. well looks like i might not be fishing now anyways. my crew has backed out for sat and sun.
  5. Looks like it may be a bit bumpy off shore this weekend Offshore: TODAY...SOUTHWEST WINDS 15 TO 25 KT DIMINISHING TO 10 TO 20 KT AND VEERING NORTH. WAVES 4 TO 7 FT SUBSIDING TO 2 TO 4 FT. .TONIGHT...NORTHEAST WINDS 15 TO 20 KT BECOMING EAST TOWARD MORNING. WAVES 3 TO 5 FT. .SATURDAY...EAST WINDS 15 TO 20 KT. SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS IN THE AFTERNOON. WAVES 3 TO 6 FT. .SATURDAY NIGHT...EAST WINDS 15 TO 20 KT INCREASING TO 15 TO 25 KT. SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS. WAVES 3 TO 6 FT BUILDING TO 4 TO 7 FT. .SUNDAY...EAST WINDS 15 TO 25 KT DIMINISHING TO 10 TO 20 KT IN THE AFTERNOON. CHANCE OF SHOWERS IN THE MORNING...THEN SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS IN THE AFTERNOON. WAVES 5 TO 8 FT SUBSIDING TO 3 TO 6 FT. .SUNDAY NIGHT...SOUTHEAST WINDS 10 TO 15 KT. WAVES SUBSIDING TO 2 TO 4 FT. .MONDAY...SOUTHEAST WINDS 10 TO 15 KT DIMINISHING TO 5 TO 10 KT AND BECOMING VARIABLE IN THE AFTERNOON. SLIGHT CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS. WAVES 1 TO 3 FT. With fishing being so poor over the last couple weeks and having to go off shore i am trying to decide what to do. Looks like monday will be the only day thats half way decent off shore. Nearshore doesnt look to bad but it sounds like the fish are scattered out deep again with the water being so warm. Nearshore: Today West winds 15 to 25 knots veering northwest 10 to 15 knots late in the day. Sunny. Waves 2 to 4 feet subsiding to 1 to 2 feet late in the day. Tonight Northeast winds around 10 knots. Partly cloudy. Waves around 1 foot. Saturday Northeast winds around 10 knots backing north late in the day. Mostly sunny. Waves 1 foot or less. Saturday Night East winds 10 to 15 knots. Partly cloudy with a slight chance of showers. Waves around 1 foot.

  10. Very Impressive. NICE JOB Gald it is being mounted it ia a once in a lifetime fish. Wish i would have had a couple i caught back in the early 80s mounted.
  11. They are in baptist lake north of GR they are really cool to watch while diving nice thing is thy dont sting and they are only the size of about a quarter to a 50 cent piece. Not like the ones i see in the carribean diving. This one was the size of a basketball off venezuela and could sting. My wife was out of there but i had to get this pic:
  12. I bought at a gander down south a shakspeare 10 ft surf rod it was a power rod for like 30 bucks for fishing florida. when i go down to my uncles. so far i have used them surf fishing in florida, as copper rods when i first started running copper and surf fishing up here throwing up to two ounce pyramids. They are just a glass rod but they have done me real well in the 10 years of owning the pair. http://www.shakespeare-fishing.com/index_rods.html
  13. When is it best to use that set up? I always have a couple out at least on two divers. Do depths matter or do you use that at all depths? from the surface to the bottom do you use the standard fly length or is it modified? 18-24 on small paddles/spin doctors 24-36 on large paddles/ spin doctors I am starting to run them on the shorter side again. How do you know when to use spoons/plugs/flies? spoons early spring through the whole season flashers flies all the time starting for cohos with mini spinnies and peanut flies plugs end of july till i pull the boat I have 2 lead core rods, 2 dipsy rods and 4 downriggers. Do flies work better on any particular rod? I run them on anything just depends what the fish wants. off my riggers i run them about 20 ft back from the ball. this last saturday my best setup was a 300 copper with a mountain dew spin doctor 8" with a pickled sunshine fly 18 inches from the loop in the knot to the end of the hook. IF the water sets back up for labor day weekend i would be looking at running more plugs. green w black ladderback is my go to, then wonder bread and silver with the red nose.
  14. Saturday went out to 220 and set up. went 6 for 12-14 had a guy on the boat that just couldnt listen and kept horsing the fish and cranking the drags down. Lost a couple fllies, one flounder pounder and a flasher fly. Anyways what worked big white paddle pickled sunshine fly on a wire diver 275 back green big paddle poofster fly 250 back. 300 coppers with mountain dew spinnies and pickled sunshine flies. rigger down 130 flounder pounder. rigger down 120 mongolian beef. Did see five different waterpouts out there. we watched two north of us for a while. then we noticed three south of us. pretty cool to watch at a distance. Sunday went back out to the same water and couldn't put a fish on to save my soul. Trolled in to 140 where people on the radio wer getting fish and nothing. Marked a ton of fish through the whole area. Did have one good rip on the same green paddle and poofster back 250 in 140 but nothing home by the time i got it out of the holder.
  15. I agree thats why if it doesnt look good we dont go. It just isnt worth it.

  18. I have the tech h2o and the bass pro not sure what it is called but same thing laminated materail camo rain suit. the bass pro seems to breathe better with less sweating when warm then the h2o also i got mine larger to wear over my hunting clothes and the bass pro is roomier the the h20. i got the h2o at the gander closout store before it went out of business whole suit for 75 bucks so i coulndt pass on it. No experience with the cabelas brand.
  19. Ken pretty cool.
  20. 107s for early spring and the 124s
  21. bring a pot of water to a boil add salt till the water wont absorb any more. Add half that amount of sugar let it cool add jello for color. drop in loose eggs or chunks of skein till it floats. I am going to try fire brine this year as it has been getting rave reviews. If it is from a steelhead in the river and it is loose eggs that are dropping. I fill a ziplock with the eggs (right then and there dont wait) and add river water till they bounce and not splat or stick when you try to bounce them. takes a few minutes. They hold up very well in a sack and milk well.
  22. I love my lowrance hds unit. I wouldnt buy anything else.
