  1. Welcome aboard. Man that "other site" isn't going to have anyone left. This one is much better any ways.
  2. Nice way to end a great season. I hit the woods for the first time this weekend with my 4 year old. He had a blast. we got 6 squirrels. I think he scared more away yeliing DADDY THERES ONE at the top of his lungs.
  3. Nice job Jimmy. . I put 6 squirrels in the freezer this weekend.
  4. Welcome aboard
  5. Welcome this is a great site with some great people
  6. thanks for that site to look at nick never used that one before. I do agree on the siler vs nickel blades. Nice thing with Jans for me is my inlaws live five minutes down the road from their store. So i am in there all the time and dont have to pay the shipping.
  7. Pretty close. its a fun project to do while watching tv on the evenings you cant get out and fish. Enjoy. If you have a cabelas near you they have anice lure building section for spinners it is worth the ride to actually see what you are going to make. Its easy to add the red lines like that with a little paint and a hobby brush or you can change it up with white paint or chartruese paint.
  8. heres a pic of one:
  9. i wouldnt be making them for almost 30 years if they werent effective. take a look at the two kits i make both of those type spinners and both kits will catch steelhead the cableas kit was put together for them by Jim Bedford. My recommendation is buy the cabelas kit it will have all the correct sized stuff for the three size spinners. Use that as a basis to order more stuff to add to the differnet types you want to make.
  10. kit form cabelas: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Tackle-Craft/Lure-Building-Kits%7C/pc/104793480/c/104776380/sc/104440680/French-Spinner-Blade-Lure-Kit/744023.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse%2Ffishing-tackle-craft-lure-building-kits%2F_%2FN-1100420%2FNs-CATEGORY_SEQ_104440680%3FWTz_l%3DSBC%253Bcat104793480%253Bcat104776380&WTz_l=SBC%3Bcat104793480%3Bcat104776380%3Bcat104440680
  11. Go to Jans netcraft and you can get everything to make them there. Are they effective heck yes and cost about 75 cents to make a spinner if you buy in quantities. There is a tool for bending the eyes thats like 30 buck and well worth using. I started making my own spinners when i was about 13. I got my first kit that made 25 from Jim Bedford at a detroit steelheaders meeting. Benn making them ever since. You can contact Jim and he has the kits made up with all the correct size pieces to make them. He usually has articals in the different fishing mags this time of years about steelheading with his contact info to buy the kits. What i did was got a couple kits so i had the correct size componets and then started buying the parts from jans in bulk. blades: http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/french-spinner-blades/ tool: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishing/Tackle-Craft/Tools-Molds%7C/pc/104793480/c/104776380/sc/104635980/Closed-Loop-Spinner-Making-Tool/742721.uts?destination=%2Fcatalog%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FN%3D1100419%26WTz_l%3DSBC%253BBRprd710031&WTz_l=SBC%3BBRprd710031%3Bcat104635980 bodies: http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/brass-lure-bodies/ wires i buy the 4 inch: http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/wire-lure-shafts/320609.aspx clevis: http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/wire-clevises/320907.aspx i usually put a 6mm faceted bead on before the body for extra color and also a piece of colored latex tube on the hook about 1/4 inch for more color :http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/vinyl-plastic-tubing/357100.aspx another thing you can do is add lure tape to the blade to dress it or if you know how to tie flies you can tie buck tails. some rivers dont allow treble hooks so i make some with single hooks instead of trebles. edit beginner kit: http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/fishing-lure-making-kits/325901.aspx
  12. thats what i was wondering also.
  13. where are you located, cant really help without a location.
  14. I tie the standard one on my braid to mono connections i doudle the twists. Another thing i do is use a drop of fishermans glue just to be safe and have never had one fail doing that. the stuff i use is like 2 or 3 bucks a bottle at outdoorsman and has a brush and lasts three seasons before it dries out.
  15. what kind of camera and housing did you use?
  16. here is a link to a smoked salmon and cream cheese recipe that i have been using for a while now. I tried a few and like this one the best http://www.greatlakesfisherman.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20522 Also for smoked fish I have been buying Boursin garlic and herd cheese. it is a soft chees spread that on a cracker then a piece of smoked fish. This went over better at christmas last year than my brothers prime rib that he spent all day cooking.
  17. For me it isn't about splitting the cost but having enough psople to actually get out. It is also nice to get meet people from here as most of the time it is just typing messages and you never get to meet the people you chat with on a daily basis.
  18. I had one of thos magnetic things and another style similar the problem is the hooks get into stuff and people. I have gone to these. You can use snaps or velcro with them. I screwed in a couple snaps in the back of my boat. you can lean against it and not get a hook in you because of the thick clear plastic that covers the lures. I use the medium size. http://www.hook-um.com/lure_products.html
  19. Dont people know its fishing season they should know better than to interupt fishing season. And then there is hunting season they cant interupt that. Hunting season is shorter than fishing season. Oh yeah than river fishing and ice fishing???
  20. I've never fished it in the fall. I know they are getting perch down there. Not sure how it has been over the last few days but a buddy of mine got a nice batch a couple weeks ago. From what i understand the water is extremely low and they have had bolles closed a lot over the last couple weeks. Be carefull launching so you dont go over the end of the pad. My buddys boat is still at brest bay marina and he says with the outdrive all the way up he is about hitting bottom all the way through the marina. He had to chop weeds just to get out last weekend they have grown in that thick in the channels. If you get out post a reprt i would be interested in knowing how you did.
  21. Dave your always welcome to come up to holland and fish with me. I can always use three more rods out, and have a good time doing it. My season is done though, time to get ready for dressing in camo and sitting in a tree. You'll like it here there is a good group of guys on this board and the mods dont put up with the belittling and bickering that some of the other boards seem to have. Newbies can ask questions here and not get bashed for not knowing everyhthing. I have been at this sport a long time and always willing to learn something new or show something that i may do differently. We all started somewhere seems to be the way the guys on here think. Sorry about the job. i went through a lay off and a tough time for over a year trying to make ends meet. It surley isnt fun. If it wasnt for some guys on here helping me out that summer i wouldnt have fished much at all as i didn't have the money to put gas in my boat to use it. They offered to take me out and whtever i could afford for gas i would give it and was told more than a few times not to even worry about it. Thats the kind of people that are on here and i am gratefull to the guys that helped me through a tough summer.
  22. Thanks jon Likewise I am also looking forward to next year. hopefully with an auto pilot on the boat
  23. Well i was hoping to get out this weekend but with the forcasted weather i think i am headed north to cut trees, fix fence, and post signs. This was going to be my last chance to get out as i have a surprise party then two weddings in a row to go to all out of town. After that it is time to go sit in a tree. Thanks to all again for a great season. It was fun fishing with some of you guys again. Man our season is just way to short, but i guess i cant complain i was only blown off a couple time and missed a couple weekends from march till now. Got a ton of fish in the freezer also. But i guess it is that time of year to start breaking down the boat.
  24. I hear ya. those lite bites work really nice for small fish. I just hate the price of them.
  25. To bad it didnt kill off the silver bass. Them things must be the cock roaches of the water if it killed carp and not the Silvers. Hope it didnt affect the walleye to badly.
