Can anyone ID this spoon? My wife picked it up at a yard sale a couple years back. I catch at least one fish on it every time I go out. It says NP3 stamped on the back so I am assuming its a Northport Nailer and possibly discontinued. If anyone knows where I can get more that would be appreciated also. Thanks for any help. Chris

Fished out of Onekama this morning, and while pulling in one of my coppers with a J-plug I thought to myself, "wouldn't it be cool if one smacked it on the way in". As I got it to about 10 yards behind the boat I saw something fast and silver come from my left, charge the plug, miss it, turn on a dime and shoot at it and miss a second time. I could tell it was a nice salmon so I dropped the plug back another ten feet and ripped it back in, and repeated a few times while the fish lurked near, but would never take another swipe. Now, I've had fish hit while bringing in lures, but never in view. Was really an awesome sight observing the speed and agility these fish possess. This was directly in the prop wash and I don't think the fish cared one bit. Made me think and wonder what really goes on beneath the waves with our baits, and just how many near hook ups we have. Anyway, thought I would share the experience. On another note, fishing is good out of Onekama and Manistee. Lots of rips and a full box. Spoons and plugs early, changed over to F/F and deep plugs as it got brighter. Good luck, Chris

If it smooths out at higher rpm's then throw some trolling bags out so you can run the engine up and maintain the slower speed. If there is nothing mechanically wrong with the motor then this would be a simple fix. And welcome to the site. Chris

Early morning bite has been good, and much better than the evening. Straight out and south, 100 to 150 fow. Spoons and f/f's have been good with blues and greens being best. I switch over to mostly meat as the sun comes up and start searching the deeper water. Ludington has been good also, and it's not a long ride down to the point. Good luck, Chris

Keith, The fish seem to be scattered now due to the cold front that moved in a few days ago. I was out last night from Onekama and had to work to get the eight or nine bites I got. Most came on riggers 80 feet or more down, but I picked up a couple steelies in the high water. Started in 180 fow, and ended up in 120 fow. Blue and green dolphin spoons seemed to be the best. Had one big rip on a flasher/fly on a low dipsy diver, but it came unbuttoned. I think Manistee or Arcadia will work for you, but if it was me I would go Manistee because you are closer to ludington and can head that way if it heats up to the south. Simple to put on, simple to remove. Can be put onto the line anywhere you like with a stopper holding it in place. That is the way I would go rather than any type of disk. Good luck, Chris

I guess I am a little confused by what you are asking. Are you planning on letting out a section of copper, and then attach it to a diver, and then let it out using rod/reel? If so I don't know how you would reel the copper back in. Again, I'm not sure what you are asking so I may be way off. I know that I would only use copper alone by itself, or with dive bombs. I think anything else and you asking for trouble. Chris

I spoke with a DNR Officer regarding this issue and was told that driving the boat would not constitute fishing, even if trolling. What they look for is anyone handling a rod/reel, assisting with said rod/reel, or in some other way attempting to, or landing a fish, or assisting in attempting to, or landing a fish. If you are doing any of those things you would need a license. The definition for fishing is in section 324.43503 of the NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ACT (EXCERPT) Act 451 of 1994, and reads as follows; “Fishing means the pursuing, capturing, catching, killing, or taking of fish, and includes attempting to pursue, capture, catch, kill, or take fish." So, according to my DNR friend, driving the boat would not fall into any of those categories. IMO driving a boat may be considered "pursuing", the DNR does not read it that way. I asked if it was thought that way across the board, and was told that is looked at as the norm. Just bear in mind this is from but one DNR Officer, but is seems to be very good, solid information. But, I also agree that purchasing a license is the best method. You are also giving a little back. Hope this helps in some way. Chris
